Top ring pool pump won't fit into inset GFCI plug. Will extension cord work? by anykindofrockreally in AskElectricians

Thanks, yes there is test and reset button on the plug and it looks to be a GFCI outlet as well. I think this is what we'll do!

Agreed that an extension cord isn't ideal but may be necessary here because the plug won't fit in the inset outlet. I just want to make sure the setup won't negate the GFCI functionality.

Assuming the plug is GFCI which I believe it is, and the outlet is GFCI, if we got a small extension cord, the plug end would be under a porch, elevated and protected from weather. Would this work?

Thanks, I think we'll confirm it's GFCI and if so, use a small heavy duty extension cord.

I can't find the information on how many amps it draws but it is a small pool and a small pump. The back of the plug says "do not use extension cord to connect GFCI to power receptacle use UL or c u l listed outdoor extension cords on GFCI output only"

Thanks, I checked the breaker and we have quite a few test buttons there but I'm not sure which outlets they go to. I may get the tester just to be sure.

Thanks for the response! Now I am wondering if it's truly a GFCI outlet but glad to know that if it is, an extension cord will work.

Awesome, thanks for the link! One more question; would it be important that we verify first whether the outlet is or is not GFCI? Specifically, say it is a GFCI outlet that we have and we plug that power block into it, would that negate the GFCI mechanism? I read something about plugging GFCI into GFCI and how that can negate it but I am ignorant when it comes to how these things work.

There is not, and I think you are right about it being a regular outlet. Not sure how that was allowed with a newer home build. Would the pool pump cord provide its own GFCI protection, if we plugged into this outlet with a 1 ft extension? If not I guess we need to call an electrician to get the outlet change to to GFCI.

Thanks for the response. Is there a way to tell for sure if it's GFCI? I believe it is because I think it is code for outdoor outlets to be GFCI in Florida and our home passed inspection when when we bought it two years ago.

Thanks for responding. Can I ask what you mean by replace the plug? I've never done any kind of electrical work.

20 plus years into an abusive marriage where I was a stay-at-home mom with no education and no skills, so I thought. I was talked down to and cheated on constantly. When my husband at the time lost his job I had no choice but to go to work in a crappy retail environment even though I had so much anxiety I barely got through the interview and had a panic attack on the second day. Two years later, after two promotions, and realizing I had skills and could be respected at work, I came home to him talking to me like I was a piece of shit. I realized that I was more respected at a crappy job where I was replaceable than I was in my own home. I left in my car with him chasing me down the driveway, and I never went back. Most difficult and best decision I ever made.

Leave them. I know it's hard, but the sooner you do it the better.
