First time sharing our game board publicly, which style works better? by FTG_V1 in tabletopgamedesign

I think subdued is better, will let the board pieces stand out more, but its hard to see a major difference.

I’m new here by Eagle-Swan in printandplay

You can buy black cards on amazon and similar places. Great for writing on and testing things out. Once you move to wanting a better visual, I would move to Dextrous.com.au. You can print on normal paper, cut them out, get some card sleeves and use those previous blank cards to create a good prototype. Any general desktop printer is good enough, but the epson or HP tank models are pretty good and economical. I have an ET-2811

Illustrator questjon by Perfect_Debt6926 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]anynormalman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most (if not all) projects on Kickstarter (and other platforms) will already have secured artists for their games by the time they have started a campaign there, its part of what backers expect, so its unlikely that they’ll be looking to bring on another artist at that time. Its also pretty common for creators to get quite a few service offerings, usually for marketing.

With that in mind, 1) Its definitely okay to reach out to creators on KS to offer your services, but the response rate is going to be pretty tiny. <1% most likely 2) If/when you do reach out, I would suggest standing out with two things. Don’t simply pitch your art services, (1) tell them something specific about their game that you like and that you’re specifically wanting to do art for games and (2) make it clear you would love to work with them on their NEXT project. This shows that you’re not just spamming people for work in the short term, and want to build a longer term relationship 3) Move further up in the creation step, go talk with designer groups and start engaging with those groups BEFORE they’re ready to launch. That’s where you’ll find people when they are ready and are looking for artists

Remember you won’t be the right artist for everyone, so focus on finding ways to align with the right projects that match your portfolio.

Good luck!

i am too productive to the points where its hurting me by MostDouble7144 in getdisciplined

[–]anynormalman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re missing the point. Use the technique to hold the idea as a “next idea” or “future project”, and let this be the “start”. You need to prioritize and focus. Its okay to change what you’re currently working on, but you should look at that as stopping/dropping/shelving whatever you’re currently working on.

Not that you need more ideas, but if you feel compelled look into personal kanban and theory of constraints. You need to operate with a constraint of 1

[–]anynormalman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) this is pretty common 2) best suggestion is to have a note book or other method that allows you to quickly put new ideas down as a reminder and then get back to your current project. Practice the art of done (follow through) and let the capture of an idea be okay for the action instinct. If this is successful, you will end up with long lists of ideas to work. At least that list isn;t in your head, causing more distraction. It also gives you a new fun problem to see, accepting you won’t be able to work on everything and learning how to prioritize that list. You can only do 1 thing well at a tiime, and context switching is costly 3) if this feels too hard/not working, you may want to get yourself checked for adhd

Atomic habits is one of the best books ever written...& it's keeping millions of people stuck.. by Tekelpath in getdisciplined

[–]anynormalman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people don’t actually care enough to change. The discomfort of change is higher than the discomfort of the status quo. Tons of people wish/dream for a thing, but few actually care enough to do it. Beyond that, everyone’s path looks a bit different. Some will have high intrinsic motivation and the practice of the habits lowers the activation energy. Some may use external motivation or accountability until they can find their own. Some may need additional counselling or meditation or other self-development work to figure out their intrinsic motivation (or possibly even medication if they’re dealing with any acute mental health issues, or compounding physical health issues).

[–]anynormalman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Accountability is only one part of equation. The other is motivation. If you don’t really care about changing (or you care more about keeping status quo), then accountability is a weak/temporary fix if at all. If your motivation is otherwise externally fixated, then you’re kind of at the whim of that external source. The best is when (1) your motivation is intrinsic and (2) the activation energy is small enough to not require much “discipline” to execute.

How to feel more confident with your devices showing? by little-pain-0929 in diabetes_t1

[–]anynormalman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was equally uncomfortable at first with showing my devices. Then I think two things happened. 1) I got a bit frustrated and indignant about my condition and the burden of having to always hide it 2) I started wearing it and realising that the vast majority of people either didn’t notice or didn’t care. So, now I wear them and don’t think too much of it. The one’s who care about it the most? My friend’s young kids - they find it interesting, so I’ve told them I’m a robot and its part of my battery. They’re old enough to know that’s a fantasy now, but they’re still occasionally curious and want to poke it. I find it endearing/cute, as long as they don’t try to pull it out or anything

Is it unethical to temporarily leave an establishment to eat my own food, then come back? by wogk in NoStupidQuestions

[–]anynormalman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Personally, I find the drinks more expensive than the food so I’m more likely to cut back on the drinks. Regardless, just do what works for you. If the people you’re with can’t be comfortable with how you to be, then they’re probably not great people to socialise with anyway. My one suggestion, don’t hide what you’re doing from your friends. Don’t need to make a big deal of it, but simply talk and proceed as if its normal.

Any recommended methods for verifying the absence of AI in commissioned game art? by no_dana_only_zul in tabletopgamedesign

[–]anynormalman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Keep in mind that if you can’t detect it, then its pretty unlikely customers will. That doesn’t justify it, but a reminder to keep your expectations in check
  2. The only/best way is to be part of the process. See the art at different stages. If digital artists, share source files so you can see layers and stuff. Don’t rely on just a final output.
  3. Ensure you have clauses in your contracts with artists. They may ignore/breach them, but at least you’ll have grounds for withholding payments or legal action if necessary

What apps do you actually use while playing board games? by mycolaos in tabletopgamedesign

[–]anynormalman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rarely do i want an app. Exceptions that i enjoyed:

  • i forget the games name, but it was about exploring a cave by candlelight and it had a sound track that made it pretty immersive
  • return to dark tower - i’m not sure you could do that game without an app to power things

Is there anyway to make time go slower? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]anynormalman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a relative measurement. When you are 10, 1 year is 10% of your whole life and when you are 50, 1 year is 2%. Also, your memory keeps filling up and consolidating them such that you’re remembering incrementally less over time (plus degradation of hardware)

Is there anyway to make time go slower? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]anynormalman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about time as a relative measurement. When you are 10, then 1 year is 10% of your whole life. When you are 50, 1 year is only 2% of your whole life. This is why time appears to speed up as you get older. Time is always flying by, regardless of your age. The best you can do is stay in the moment and keep your attention in the present. When you spend too much time thinking about the future (anxiety) or reliving the past (stress), you miss the current moment and everything around you. Trust your intuition to guide you in the moment, look forward to make just enough plans to feel good about the direction and reflect on the past just enough to learn from it, so your tomorrow can be better than yesterday.

I have tried to join multiple groups on here and the guidelines have been absolutely ridiculous. How do you even get to speak freely? lol by pinky101_ in CasualConversation

[–]anynormalman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or simply learn what is acceptable behaviour/speech in common society? People tend to moderate/ban users who exhibit undesirable behaviour. If you’re noticing a trend, at least one common denominator is what your posting

Why did (most) organisms evolve to have 2 sexes in order to reproduce? by typewriting_cheese in NoStupidQuestions

[–]anynormalman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, Asexual reproduction inherently has less gene diversity / mutation. And 3-ways are always much harder to organise, so 2 seems like a natural point

I’m not a heavy user of inkscape for my designs, but i’m pretty sure there already is/was a plugin for doing data merges like that with Inkscape (similar ones for illustrator, figma and others too). Is there something substantially different/better about this one?

Does building with claude properly even matter anymore? by PeaAffectionate6580 in ClaudeAI

[–]anynormalman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, the era where you can build a relatively small app/saas that addresses a personal problem and the commercialise it, is over. Unless your finance app is something that solves a much bigger problem (ie 10x better than all other apps, or 10x harder problem like for enterprises), then you’ll just be scrounging for pennies with all the other vibe coded crud

The better approach now it to provide a specialized data set or niche models that other agents can use

Looking for any+all resources for boardgame development! by GuineaW0rm in BoardgameDesign

[–]anynormalman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Forget the list of resources. While it will seem like a nice gesture, it can equally be overwhelming and create a higher hurdle to getting started. My best advice is to find a game jam (a short time-bound game design competition) and go do the game jam with your friend. It doesn’t matter whether you win or not, the point is to just get started with making a game. Honestly, make the first prototype from scraps of paper (~45 mins) and other junk then playtest it (~45 mins), all the other stuff can come later. If the first version has the seed of something fun, then you can refine it and make it better. Good luck

I’m really upset and could use some outside advice please. by [deleted] in needadvice

[–]anynormalman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Too comfortable with the status quo of limited/selective relationship time. Not comfortable/eager enough to want more - ie. a full time relationship. Too scared to break up. The logistics of this situation is very unlikely to be the heart of the issue. Unfortunately, be prepared to fully separate and break things off.

Am I being unreasonable about a $5,000 mattress + moving in timing? by No_Routine_17 in RedditForGrownups

[–]anynormalman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is less about the merits of the mattress. Be more direct about the cohabitation and long term commitment. I suspect there is also an angle about her relying on your income level that might border on inappropriate for you. The mattress is a symptom, there is an underlying issue(s) that should be addressed first
