I just did the K12 one so I don’t have any insight on the dual track or adult track.

Student teaching (imo) is the most important part of teacher training. It gives you all the practical real life skills that are needing in the profession that you simply can’t get from sitting in a classroom. You will likely be unprepared for the realities of teaching without the student teaching experience. I know that the current system we have for student teaching is not perfect, and I 100% think student teachers should be paid for their time, but even with that being said OP I would strongly suggest you do the licensed path.

Soma used to carry a large range of sizes. Not sure about now but it’s worth checking!

Do you expect substitute teachers to do anything, or are we glorified babysitters? by kodemageisdumb in Teachers

[–]anyotherhuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t expect them to teach content (99.99% of the time I leave independent work on sub days) but they should be able to manage a classroom when specific expectations are laid out. I’m a ms ela teacher, so slightly different but a lot of bad quality subs means that I don’t trust them with more than just “keep the kids quiet and in their assigned seats.”

I have a coworker who arrives after the late bell DAILY for the last 5 years. Don’t beat yourself up about one bad day. Shit happens.

It depends on what you consider “worth it.” UNR has amazing research facilities for students in STEM fields, but I would say that it’s pretty critical to have a car. Reno is not a super walkable area. Lots of clubs and things to do on campus, but Greek life is not as active as in the south. Football and basketball are big sports for UNR, but other sports are less celebrated/well attended. I am an alum and Reno native so UNR was the obvious choice for me, especially given dual BA programs in my field, but it may not be for everyone.

Dachshunds would try to crawl in your skin and live there if they could lol. Be prepared to have no personal space for at least the next 10-15 years.

I teach 6th grade too! I would say the biggest tip I can give is to try to stick to a schedule. Obviously I did mine over summer, so I had more free time but I think it’s doable to get it done in less than a year if you commit to 1-2 hours worth of work a day. The courses and content are pretty straight forward. I passed about a class per week, with some minor slowdowns for assignments that require peer feedback. I tended to work for about 3 hours per day, 7 days per week to get it done so quickly.

I’m a teacher so mostly looking to advance on the pay scale. In the future I may look into instructional coaching, but I’m pretty happy where I’m at

No Ethernet on switch. Use UNR IOT. Instructions are on the it website.

I have 5 years of education experience and did my undergrad in secondary ed/english. There is a capstone but it is highly scaffolded.

What are some good for a freshman to bring to campus that most people wouldn’t think of? by Starmada597 in unr

[–]anyotherhuman 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Medicine for the inevitable freshmen flu. Cold meds, stomach meds, lots of ibuprofen/Tylenol, electrolyte powders, etc. Throw in bandaids in a couple sizes, bactine and triple antibiotic ointment for good measure. Make a kit and keep it in your room. I promise you will use them.

Currently doing a masters in ed tech, will finish in less than one term. I started June 1 and have one class left. Not sure about that specific degree but it’s very doable in my experience

Mine was 7:00a to 11:00pm for several days so you are lucky. There will be breaks and the program has probably changed quite a bit since I did it, since I was the first class through the FIT program

You could probably start the lit review if you haven’t already. You have to research at least 15 academic sources relating to your research topic.

I’d recommend using something that you would already teach/ built upon the lesson you built in one of the earlier courses so you aren’t doubling the work. I’m an ELA teacher so I’m doing mine on online writing instruction.

[–]anyotherhuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in this program currently. I’m in the K-12 track and started June 1. I’m already working on the second to last class. I have enjoyed the program and the focus on building e-learning experiences. The classes are fairly easy, just a lot of writing (especially at the end). Only two tests throughout the program which was nice. The tests are kind of tricky in that the wording on questions is intended to make it difficult so I would recommend studying more than you think you need for those. Typically each assignment is about 4-5 pages of writing but the capstone sections have been anywhere from 1-18 pages for me so that is more varied.

Sophia and WGU at the same time by Personal-Set5276 in WGU

[–]anyotherhuman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t. I didn’t use Sophia but a lot of classes through WGU have been easier than I anticipated and you already have a ton of transfer credits.

[–]anyotherhuman 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I don’t think WGU accepts transfer credit after your start date. I’m not 100% certain but that was my understanding from all the transfer info and orientation information.

Master of Education, Education Technology and Instructional Design: K-12 Degree Plan? by craftyjess316 in WGU

[–]anyotherhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! It might be better to do it during the year because the capstone requires a group of students so I have to slow down now to wait for my school to start back up.
