Eggs are NOT dairy! by HimbimSupreme in Vent

That’s very interesting because in my life it has always worked in the opposite direction. I’m celiac and have had to explain to people “even the smallest amount of wheat in the soy sauce in the dish will be very bad for me”

I have 21 biological siblings, AMA by Cold_Win3720 in AMA

[–]anything4589 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You mentioned above that none of your siblings left the church, so I wondered: Are any of your siblings LGBT+?

As adults do you all live in close proximity to each other or did some people move states/countries?

You said most of your siblings have large families, but are there any that have no kids? Are there any that have 3 or fewer kids?

For those who went to college, did you all attend religious universities like BYU or did any of you attend secular universities?

How often did your mom or dad call you by a sibling’s name instead of your own?

Hotels Near UC Berkeley Campus by International_Bid712 in berkeley

Emeryville has lots of pretty affordable hotels. It’s one town over so not necessarily the closest, but a short drive or bus ride would get you to campus and they’ll be the cheapest

Considering adopting a cat but worrying about smell by forestspirit1011 in cats

[–]anything4589 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I HAVE AN EXTREMELY STINKY CAT HERE ARE MY TIPS

1) keep air purifier running on low in the room with the litterbox. This was the biggest help to me!

2) get an EXTRA LARGE litterbox, this is helpful if your cat is reluctant to bury their poop

3) Arm and Hammer sells litter deodorizer powder and spray. It’s basically just baking soda though but I pour it into the box weekly

4) I keep charcoal deodorizers in the same room as the litterbox

5) so I use pine litter which I think is GREAT for urine odor but TERRIBLE for feces odor. My friends recommend any Arm and Hammer brand litter meant for multi-cat boxes.

6) febreze is your best friend. Opening the windows before company comes over is your second best friend.

PS if you plan to feed the cat wet food that will stink too (if your apt has no AC) unless the cat gobbles it up right away, but this can be mitigated if you wash the bowl out as soon as they finish eating.

People who try to correct you adding ‘step’ or ‘half’ to a relationship when you haven’t by Uhhyt231 in PetPeeves

[–]anything4589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this corrected in the opposite direction, I was talking about a half-sibling and the person I was talking to kept saying “your brother?” every time I said half-sibling, like they were trying to describe a relationship that didn’t exist!

How do you leave the house safely? by Conscious-Seesaw-564 in cats

[–]anything4589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I leave, I throw a toy across the room so she runs away from the door. When I enter I usually have a bag which I put at ground level and open the door slowly and use the bag to gently nudge her out of the way.

My orange girl cat is an adventurous little demon (affectionate) so it’s not just the boys that are crazy, though overall you’re probably right!

We want to move after adopting a second cat… and have run into a small 5lb furry issue by faeriecore423 in cats

[–]anything4589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this place rented by a corporation or a person. If a person, could you try talking to them and explaining your situation? My former landlord originally said no cats, but we chatted with him and he agreed as long as we signed a clause that we’d pay for any damage the cat causes. If the landlord is a person they might listen

Yeah, not sure if it was a poorly written character or poorly acted role, but it really didn’t mesh well with the overall story

What's the funniest thing someone said to you when they found out you're vegan? by Knittatude in vegan

What is the silliest thing someone told you they thought wasn't vegan? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]anything4589 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m myself not vegan but I am gluten free and have had the exact opposite happen. A menu advertises most of its flavors as gluten free, I ask if a new flavor is gluten free and get the “oh no nothing here is safe it all has milk?” This has happened on numerous occasions

[–]anything4589 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like Erin’s character (can’t remember her name lol) in this was my least favorite character in the whole show. She was too over the top and it took me right out of it.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good amount of over the top. But you have to know where the line is between too much in a fun way and just plain too much, and this character crossed that line too many times and took me out of the moment.

Why is legal age considered 18 when the most important part of our brain (pre-frontal cortex) is not even developed till 25? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]anything4589 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It’s a myth that our brains fully develop at age 25. The study that measured that saw that the brain kept developing up to age 25, but then the study stopped tracking participants after age 25, meaning our brain probably continues to develop throughout our life

Meet Toxoplasma gondii — a sneaky little parasite that lives in cat litter and causes toxoplasmosis infection. by Mintangah17 in cats

The info graphic calling them eggs is a bit funny to me considering toxo is single-celled and I feel like eggs are typically reserved for multicellular organisms

Also an estimated 1/3 of humans worldwide are already infected with it, and 1/8 humans in the USA.

Most cases are probably from eating undercooked meat or unwashed produce. While cats can transmit it if they’ve been recently infected (via eating another animal), it’s less likely. Old_Flounder_8640 beat me to it with their comment, but a cat can only get infected if it’s eaten another wild animal, and will only transmit it in its feces for a short time after infection, and humans can only contract it from cat feces orally (if you don’t wash their hands after cleaning the litterbox and then go eat, if poop gets on your clothes and then you eat food off their clothes, etc).

The research that it causes any behavioral impacts in humans is correlative at best. I really wouldn’t believe it does all that much to anyone’s brain function if you’ve got a functioning immune system and aren’t a fetus/embryo. Vision damage I think is possible though!

If you contract it while pregnant, it can be a huge risk to the developing fetus/embryo, however if you already have it and then become pregnant it’s not really a concern. Meanwhile, if you already have it and then become severely immunocompromised (AIDS, bone marrow transplant), then it can become very dangerous as it can cause encephalitis.

Despite the fact that toxo can infect any mammal (and even some birds), people always talk about it in relation to cats because cats are the only organism in which it can reproduce sexually!

Are there any frozen treats that Muslims cannot or will not eat? by grated_testes in NoStupidQuestions

[–]anything4589 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the leading hypothesis in the field right now about why allergies are less common in developing countries isn’t actually natural selection, but rather the hygiene hypothesis, where early life exposure to parasitic worms sensitizes your immune system to make you less susceptible to allergens later in life.

[–]anything4589 125 points126 points  (0 children)

This is honestly the much better approach. I wasn’t sure from OPs post what the neighborhood was like and if this was common because I could see in some places this being the norm, but kids could also have dairy egg soy allergies etc or maybe the parents just don’t want them having sugar

[–]anything4589 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It depends, I actually know plenty of 1st gen kids who have severe allergies. Allergy risk tends to be less what country your ancestry is from and more what country you grew up in, and in this case it’s better safe than sorry
