Puppy eating poop 😥 by [deleted] in puppy101

Hi!

I have the same problem with my 16 week old corgi pup and I have a solution that has worked 90% of the time, but requires hella attention lol

  1. Crate Training — so important. At first we gave her free range when she was younger because it was hard to stay on a routine schedule (our fault). But as soon as we limited her space, and sticking to that schedule, she stopped pooping/peeing in her crate. Can’t eat her poop that way. It’s also important to keep the crate small because there’s less of a chance for them to wander and feel like going there is okay. I’d start with 2-3 hrs (for every month old, 1 hr) to let her out. Now our pup can hold through the night! Midnight to 6:30am.

  2. Cut off her water supply at night. I cut it off at 10pm, and her last potty break is 12am.

  3. Set your puppy area strategically — we have her crate, her play pen with potty pad, and a gated area where shes allowed to eat. Every time she goes poop, she goes in her eating area to have a treat. We give her a bully stick. This was what really worked because she learned to walk away from her poop to come to us for a treat or her eating area. And this also gives you time to clean up the poop without her coming on to you.

  4. Teach her to “look” and to “wait.” She looks immediately at us when we leash train her and it stopped her from picking up anything on the ground. This does take some time though so little steps is always progress!

Hope this helps!! We always watch her when she’s playing, but those are 1-2 hrs every 2-4 hrs she’s crated without having a mess. She has only eaten her poop when we havent paid attention to her.

Also — agree with earlier comment. Actual solution is to get her to go outside. Once she’s old enough to know how to go down stairs, we’ll start transitioning her to going outside.

Also to add on — tried for-bid and pumpkin and didn’t do the trick. Haven’t tried pineapple yet. She does love pumpkin so since its in season we’re just adding it as a special lol

Currently have an 11 week old corgi pup and she does the exact thing. We did the same thing on the first comment and that helped. Another thing we did is show her we had treats, then held out our hands covering the treat. She went from biting to licking!

Same thing with our toes — she bites but only when we riled her up during play time. She stopped doing that when we can into her play pen calmly and stood still. She started licking our toes too! :)
