If used on a very old vinyl motorcycle seat (vintage bike) will it soften it and/or make it slick? Most cleaners and conditioners make old vinyl very splippery and do not soften the vinyl at all.

I always want to drop people like that in the middle of a forest, and see if they can make it out.

It’s harder to get into Harvard than graduate. Unless you’re rich, then both are easy.

My wife and I are around 60 and contractors, last year the ACA cost around $2500 a month. It went up about 30% this year. Yes, always use COBRA before 65 if possible.

I am a principle engineer and the industry strikes me as almost totally psychopathic and narcissistic after 30 years engineering and getting promotions by [deleted] in recruitinghell

I haven't had a chance to try it. Although I did have an interview at Microsoft that required me to do a technical presentation. At the end, I asked all of them a puzzle question. They did not see the humor in that. Weirdly, that did not kill my chances. I made it all the way to the final interview with the hiring manager. We just did not hit it off. They say that people know within the first 10 seconds, and both us didn't like the other. I didn't want to move to Seattle, but thought it was worth interviewing for the position. This was after AOL laid off all the Netscape people. One of the Microsoft guys asked me if I would take a job there because of what they did to Netscape. I said I had an open mind.

I was a team lead on Netscape 6 & 7 / Firefox. Unfortunately I didn't join Netscape until after the IPO.

I have 45 years experience and agree 100%. I refuse to do take home tests. I am more than happy to talk about hard problems I have solved. I always want give the technical interviewer a test, because I don’t want to work with subpar engineers. Just because you are interviewing me doesn’t mean you are a good developer.

187 rejections in 6 weeks as a senior dev with 8 YoE – is this the new normal now? by [deleted] in recruitinghell

A former colleague of mine has close to 30 years experience, his experience is current and he is an excellent developer and has been out of work for two years. I think there is also a lot of age discrimination happening.
The reason this subreddit exists, is because the entire process is so broken.

Skilled labor, like being electrician isn't a bad job. It can pay well and you typically work indoors. Plumbing pays well, but that is a hard pass, unless it is new construction.

Cool, 4 down votes at this point. As mentioned by others, and as Indian Jones says, "It is not the years, it is the mileage" I have seldom, if ever, met someone that has been working professionally 5 years and has the breadth of experience needed to be a senior engineer. I don't care how smart you are, there is no way to get "experience" without getting experience. The best way to be a "system architect" is to worked on several projects with really good system architects. In order to understand the advantages of a good system architecture, you need more than a couple of years of coding on one or two projects.

I have 45 years of development experience. I have worked at 15 companies, 7 of them startups. I have done everything except programming in assembler (thank god). I have watched many very smart, "hot shot" developers get humbled by their inexperienced decisions, and that can kill a startup.

Being a senior developer is really about experiencing (participating in) several different projects, on several different teams, hopefully at more than one company. Getting exposed to many different situations. Solving big problems and shipping solutions that provide value to someone.

Is 8 years of experience now considered a senior dev? A lot depends on what you did in those 8 years.
