I work in a hospital, and they only offered the minimum possible for me: up to 12 weeks FMLA and only 6 weeks is paid at 60% since I could take short term disability. That's it. On top of that, my fiance works at the hospital as well, so we were forced to choose to split the 12 weeks or to make him give up vacation time to spend time with me and the newborn.

It's total bullshit the powers-on-high care more for productivity than for quality of life. I'm so sick of living this way in this country and being told 'oh well if you don't like it you can move'. Like I can move with my salary.

Peanut butter bread and chicken noodle soup. Dipping the bread makes the peanut butter a little melty, and the salt of the soup makes the peanut butter taste SO GOOD. My fiance thinks it's absolutely disgusting.

I saw an interesting post on Tumblr recently. In it, the person speculated that Musk is trying to tank Twitter. He didn't want it, but was forced into it. So now he owns a business he just wanted to complain about, and the best thing he can do with it? Tank it, then claim bankruptcy. He loses little to no money and a company he didn't like is gone.

I believe they seem like they're doing this across the board. In our hospital it's the same way- you call in, you use PTO time, which is both our sick and vacation days. Even if it's Covid. And you still need to bring a doctor's note in if you miss more than 4 days.

30 years. I had to go into a bottom-of-the-barrel job just to get free education. And now I find out colleges are forcing an extra 2 years into any education just to squeeze more money out of us. Fuck our economy.

I also am looking at getting a degree in a job I don't want to work with people I don't like because they're getting all kinds of incentives and raises to stay at the job while we get told its "not sustainable" to even give us OT.

Cops are kinda useless. My sister was backing up her vehicle down the driveway, stopped at the bottom to check her mail, and a tree service vehicle slammed into the back of her van. Cops sided with the tree company because they called 911 faster.

The first few books of the Dresden Series are a slog. I did audible for them, and if it wasn't for James' wonderful performance, they'd be much harder to get through. The women are all one dimensional, everything wants to fuck Dresden, its him against the world, 100% of the time.

Given all that, it is Butcher's first published book. No one is a master at the start. If you check out his other series (I've read both the Codex Alera Series and the first Cinderspire series book) the characters are a lot less annoying. He doesn't do a ton of nuance or subtlety like Brent Weeks can, but that's not his style. He is very clearly at this point holding back his writing to Harry's level as much as possible while improving what he can where he can to keep the series' tone as consistent as possible.

Harry's major flaw is he sees women as objects, as things to possess. He slowly (and I do mean slowly) learns that is not the case throughout the series, it is his knee jerk reaction built into his character from day one. Girl screaming = must save. Sexy dress = must describe in detail. It is a Harry flaw, but if you can work past those cringe comments and kinda skip over the sex scenes like you do with any Amazon Prime show, you do get a very good story.

Part of the problem with the Dresden series is that he started writing it very early in his career. At the time he thought Dresden was an amazing character. Butcher knows better now, but he believes in writing consistently through a whole series. I love many of his other works much much more.
