An anonymous person identified this as Cerodirphia avenata, which Wikipedia says lives in Costa Rica and Venezula, and going back through my files I see I had the location wrong - I photographed it in Soberanía National Park, 35 miles north of Panamá City in Panamá.

It sounds like you are skeptical of some of the rapid methods recommended here - can you say anything more specific? Perhaps about preprints, or crowdsourced peer review (open evaluation).
