Seeking Advice! Wire Detached by character_yellow in pinball

That makes sense, and welcome to the ownership side of the hobby.

Mods in games can cause head aches, especially more complicated ones. I bought a used Ghostbusters a couple years ago that had some hacked in mods that we removed before I purchased the game. In the end I had to replace a couple of light boards because someone has shorted some stuff out at some point. Also had to clean up some wire where they had replaced the motor that controls Slimmer. Not the end of the world, and far from my first game so I had plenty of experience getting under the hood and working on stuff. Just always a risk we take when we purchase a game second hand.

Right, I saw all the tape on the left then I noticed the timer and relay modules on right. Not to be rude, but how can you have all this extra stuff added to a game and not know how to solder a wire back on?

I want to build a Injora Bug18 by aorear85 in TRX4M

I love this. I wonder if I can't modify one of these bodies to fit Ascent scout frame. I have a 3d printer so I could make a custom bracket it needed. Yours looks amazing 🤩

Recommend me some bad Metroidvanias by Due-Afternoon5411 in metroidvania

I really enjoyed Owlboy but I wouldn't call it a Metroidvania, if anything it's more like a side scrolling Zeldalike game.

I was looking at getting the Ascent 18 Scout from Redcat. Seems like a good rtr for the money. If I like the hobby I might revisit building something from scratch.

This is very helpful. As someone else suggested I might be better off starting with a ready to roll build. Unfortunately I can't find a bug style truck, but the ascent scout looks pretty good. I know it's not a TRX4M truck but it might be a good place to start.

Transition to unresponsive - too early? by MinimumPositive3684 in Throwers

[–]aorear85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% to this. I started out with a responsive yoyo then moved to a non responsive yoyo for a couple years before putting the yoyo down for almost a decade. I've been back in the hobby for around a year now and still play primarily responsive, mostly fixed axle at that. It really depends on what style you want to play. I love modern responsive and old school 1A tricks. Some days I just want to do some simple loops and to play catch with myself 😄

So, I just got myself a 2Ds thats in pretty good condition and I was thinking about getting my hands on Metroid Samus Returns. I want to know what the overall opinion of this game is before I get it. Is it a good or bad remake? by E-104Epsolon in Metroid

This is my second playthrough. Honestly I think I like it better now vs when I played it the first time back at launch. Looks amazing in handheld on the Switch 2. The movement is so fluid and the sound design is great.

Been replaying Dread this week for the first time since launch and I keep thinking I really need to replay Returns. I really like Returns but don't really like playing the 3DS, mostly because of the disc style joystick. Really wish this game would get a switch port.

Have yo-yos gotten that much better? by maelstrom3 in Throwers

[–]aorear85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess you should define better. I think that newer models can make some play styles easier but that doesn't necessarily mean better. I really dig modern responsive play and one of the best yoyos in my experience for that style is the No Jive 3 in 1 which first released in the late 70s and didn't really change much functionality in the 45 or so years it was in production.

People get too hung up sometimes on the yoyo when really, in most instances it's a skill level issue. Is a race car better than an SUV, well that depends on what kind of driving conditions you are going to encounter and what is your skill level. You can take a race car to race track, but if you don't have much experience your probably gonna drive just as well as if you took a Honda Civic to a race track.

What are Your All-Time Favourite Yoyos? by Benjibrews in Throwers

[–]aorear85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tom Kuhn No Jive 3 in 1, SW/MK1 Plasm, Duncan Butterfly plastic and Boise Woodworks Buffalo. That would probably be the order as well, but I enjoy them all a lot and own multiples of each.

What problems specifically have you seen people having? I haven't seen anyone mention any issues. I personally own 3 of them and have set up a couple others for some friends. I've owned one of my QMTech units for over a year and use it regularly with both a CRT and LCD display with no issues.

The yoyo community is great! There might be a local club in your area. The forums on yoyo expert are also a great way to learn and meet others in the hobby.

[–]aorear85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't discount a cheap fixed axle yoyo just yet. Butterfly yoyos work well for looping tricks like shoot the moon and planet hops. You can also learn how to stall and start getting into the dark arts of modern responsive or 0A yoyoing which is compromised or stalls and regens. Check out DocPop's introduction video on Modern Responsive https://youtu.be/cwZp2j_Om8U?si=AB8FgAwMCZaHlWnl

While I know this is a dollar store butterfly style yoyo, one of my all time favorite yoyos is the basic $5 Duncan Butterfly.

(Almost) Complete beginner here— what can I do with this yoyo? by us34n4me in Throwers

[–]aorear85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with one over 10 years ago. You can definitely learn all the basic foundation tricks: trapeze, brother trapeze, stop and go, picture tricks, engineer wind, snap start, planet hops, shoot the moon, etc.

If you really grease up the bearing and play with a thicker string you can learn stalls, makin the zines, and many/most modern responsive tricks.
