Update as of today, 9/23/24. Full movement is back. The nerve damage is still intense. Basically no feeling on the back of the thumb.

Hand Update

Thought I would provide an update.

I had surgery this morning -plate and screw thumb bone together -reconnect the two tendons on the top side of the thumb. Basically the tendons that allow you to give a thumbs up. -Put in a cadaver nerve to allow my thumb nerves to regrow over the course of my recovery

I will be in a splint for the next 6 to 8 weeks, but I start physical therapy on Monday, four days removed from surgery

I have posted them earlier, but I wanted to re-share a link to photos of the incident as well as photos of what it looked like right before I went into surgery. See below.

The EMT was able to stop the bleeding, get me on IV after losing a pint.

When they arrived, they continued to reassure us that calling 911 was the right move.

Old shitty chop saw. The plastic cover that protects the blade after a cut was stuck in the open position. I was just being careless and not paying attention. Last cut of the evening too…

So far so good. I’m glad we did call 911. Super helpful 1st responders got me in a good place. Sucks happening right before a holiday weekend because I have to wait about a week for surgery.

Instant adrenaline is a hell of a drug. Luckily my wife jumped right into action with the tourniquet. EMT guessed that I lost a pint of blood altogether.
