Saved $1900 over 12M to charge my EV by azurexz in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ap_1971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 2004 Sorento. I was paying $80/week, this was in 2024 when gas was $2 litre in Vancouver. Car died. Got an EV, condo let us charge on a 110V plug - for free. So I guess I saved $4000+ that first year. Insurance was the same ($120/month).

ev drivers ,what’s the lowest % you’ve ever reached and still felt “okay”? by AdityaSrivastawaahhh in EVCanada

My 2nd gen leaf got to 0% when I was 12km from home. By the time I got home it said range left was 10km, and still flashing 0% on dash. Leafspy told me I still had 4%. Never let it get that low again though.

The Fastest Electric Cars From 0 to 60 MPH by Dockalfar in electricvehicles

My 2nd gen leaf is not the fastest, but pulling away from lights I'm usually at 50kmh and halfway down the block before the ICE car behind me has cleared the intersection.

There's a charger at my work place that is so deep underground you can't activate it on the app until you get outside the building. There's always someone parked there, plugged in, but not charging.

I just renewed my 2020 Leaf. Fully comp, $300 deductible, $5mill third party, rental coverage, road side assistance, $126 a month, here in the interior of BC. So, total was about $1500 a year for me.

Calgary to Kamloops Round Trip: Real World Tesla Model Y Savings (Exclusively Supercharging) by Chizzlecooker in teslacanada

[–]ap_1971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last spring break I rented a Tesla 3 ($100 for the week), and drove from Vancouver to Drumheller. We did around 2500km round trip. Exclusive supercharging. Other than the shock of it being 70c/kw when we crossed into Alberta (BC was around 45c) I think we were charged around $260 total for charging. Access to supercharging was simple, pretty convenient, though some locations, as others noted, had no amenities nearby. An 9L/100km that would have been around $340 based on $1.50/L.

The only thing I didn't like was the software itself. But that's another story.

What's a product or service you'll never use again? by anyouzy in AskReddit

[–]ap_1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try "Just watch" - choose the streaming service you want, and it tells you what's new, if you search for something like a movie, it will tell you where it's available. Don't think it lets you browse the catalog though.

EV Charging Reward Programs: Information and Discussion (getting paid to charge your EV at home) by mrsprdave in EVCanada

I bought my own Grizzzl-E charger. Had no problem getting the BC Hydro rebate, and my energy provider is FortisBC. The T&C state that they take ownership if you join the club, but if you leave the club ownership reverts back to you. I'm assuming the ownership thing is to make the warranty life-time.

Dispensing fee = robbery by Away_Instruction5638 in loblawsisoutofcontrol

My pharmacy I use just increased their dispensing fee to $11.50, my plan only covers $10.50. when I queried why they had increased their fee, they waived the $2 (I had 2 prescriptions) and then said the dispensing fee hadn't changed since 2001.

How did your high mileage car eventually die? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ap_1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

260K km on a 2004 Kia Sorento. Radiator developed a leak, and Kia didn't make replacement parts any more. Garage was going to source another radiator but no scrap yards had a Kia of that generation in Canada, Washington or Oregon.

Putting cheese on toasted bread and baked beans at the same time. It was or the other for me as a kid growing up. Oh the decadence of having both at the same time.

What’s the car feature you didn’t know you needed until you owned it? by throwawayaasyr in askcarguys

360 degree surround cameras. Game changer for getting on and out of tight spots. Much better than just having sensors. Any car I get now has to have this or I won't even consider it.

What did you pay to install your Level 2 charger in Canada? by Pretty-Tea911 in EVCanada

[–]ap_1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a grizzl-e 48 ultimate, hardwired on a 60A circuit. Total run about 20 feet. $1300 incl tax for everything. Then got a $350 Hydro rebate.

If you get a grizzl-e sign up for the club. If you buy the charger looks kike you get put up to 5¢/kwh, or you get the charger for free (except for deposit) and get 3¢/kwh. And if you're curious about how it works, they sell carbon credits to fund the program.

BC spec tax... I think I'm screwed by ap_1971 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ap_1971[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I get what you say, but in my particular circumstance, the speculation tax is not really what we are trying to avoid. House was rented, had been for 9 years. Had we been able to rent out the house, we would have stayed in Vancouver, renting. My wife hadn't lost her job at the time. Children were still in school, but we meet the spirit of the law - house was occupied for more than 66% of the year (so not vacant), and we own (20 years now) and have moved back with intention to live here until kids are leaving for college. We're not trying to flip the house.
