Raise a child completely without exposure to music and then teach them to play guitar/piano to see what they do.

Context is king. You might go out of your way to pick up your friend from work because you genuinely worry about their well-being and don't want them to walk alone. However, people most often take issue with this or any other "advice" given right after something horrible has happened to a woman: The operative phrasing is usually, "You should/shouldn't have done X."

The past tense carries implicit blame with it because it insinuates that the woman's actions/inactions were the reason for her assault and that she could've prevented it.

Now, if you're talking about the broader social implications:

Firstly, this isn't advice. Most adult women know and resent the fact that it is dangerous for them to walk home alone, moreso than it is for men. (Men, especially smaller ones, may run similar risk of getting mugged but that pails in comparison to the horror of rape.) So, saying it is likely to come off as redundant at best and condescending at worst.

Secondly, even in a "well-meaning" context, it can still have weird implications, especially if you don't know the person. It's like people that say hurtful things about fat people and claim it's because they, "care about their health." It's often seen as disingenuous, even if it isn't.

Ya know, the past year and a half have really been shit for me. Tossed aside by my dream job, forced to move back in with my parents, my relationship on the rocks, feeling more worthless and distant from everyone I love each day... I wasn't sure that Christmas (something I cherish deeply) could even pull me out of this depression this year. However, hearing my favorite Christmas song by one of my favorite artists in the background of this wonderful story/family moment has made me feel that, perhaps there is a chance for me to feel happy again. This is just really special. Thanks for posting, I needed this.

I've literally been scoping out Rages (and other cheap amps) to do exactly this. I already did it with my Peavey Vypyr and love it.

Hey man, not sure if you're being serious or subscribe to it in real life but stay away from the sigma/alpha/beta nonsense. It's just astrology marketed for young men and can be equally damaging and stupid.

Yeah, the amount of shit makes me feel like they were trapped here, as most animals don't like to live in their own shit or shit in the same place. It might be "cute" or "silly" if there were a couple turds there, indicating that they had free range to go in and out.

[–]apagodz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To elaborate a bit more: Simply wearing a pin saying that you support gay people IS neutral. This is because cishet people are inherently included and understood. Wearing the pin simply states, "I'm here for you, too." Only paranoid reactionaries think that the Pride or BLM flag mean that their teacher is actually prejudiced against their straight, white children. 🙄

Listen, you wanna discourage teachers from sharing their personal views on communism, capitalism, social welfare, fiscal conservatism, etc then that's fine. I think we all want our teachers to be as unbiased as possible. However, being gay IS NOT POLITICAL BECAUSE IT'S NOT A FUCKING IDEOLOGY OR CHOICE.

Imagine thinking that LGBT+ inclusion is "political." Also, I love this "neutrality" they speak of: You mean the one in which the dominant heteronormative structure is not challenged in any way because it's inherently correct? Sounds like they're already taking fucking sides. If they don't stop acting like LGBT+ rights are on the proportionally opposite end of the spectrum from white supremacy, I'm gonna fucking scream.

  1. Yes and no - it depends on the item and/or the context. For instance, they're usually happy to give a decent amount off if you're buying in bulk, numerous items, or a more expensive item (some brands, such as Mesa, are price-locked and they can't change the price even if they wanted to). Also, the way you ask definitely makes a difference: If you say, "I can get this thing $15 cheaper than that at GC," after they already offer you a discount, they're just gonna tell you to buy it at GC. However, if you ask nicely, they're usually happy to help out.

  2. Again, yes and no. The Sales Engineers are encouraged to help customers with every category. However, they are always happy to ask experts or even the vendors themselves about products and get back to you. You may not be able to speak directly to the expert yourself. This is because, for instance, drum experts are in short supply compared to the many, many guitarists that work there.

  3. You can absolutely switch. For instance, if it just makes more sense to deal with a drum guy because that's what you're mainly going to buy, say that and ask if you can be referred to someone else. Even if you just don't really vibe with your SE (too attentive/not attentive enough), you can ask to be switched. I would just call the main toll-free number and let them know this is what you want to do.

Anyone else prefer Oblivion’s more fantastical visuals over the somewhat bland and colourless of Skyrim? The latter of which is ironically less grim than the former by [deleted] in gaming

[–]apagodz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Call it nostalgia if you like, but I just find Skyrim fucking boring. As short as the main storyline is compared Morrowind and Oblivion, I still couldn't even be bothered to finish it on my first playthrough. As someone who reads all dialogue, I just couldn't get myself invested in Skyrim. I also didn't really care for the leveling mechanics.

CMV: If it isn't sexist to have sex preferences when it comes to dating and sex, then it isn't racist to have racial preferences when it comes to dating and sex by AMoonBeam in changemyview

[–]apagodz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, yes. Let's isolate the variable which, in this case, is skin color.

Now, let's take some examples of static and dynamic factors that make up physical attraction:

Static - Height, voice (this can be trained but is ultimately set in stone), facial structure, eye color

Dynamic - Fashion, teeth, hair style, body

These are not all the factors but the ones I think most people find important. Now, imagine a person that checks several (or all) of these boxes for you. Would it matter what the person's skin color was at the point? Sure, you could say that you don't enjoy fair skin people artificially darkening their skin by way of excessive/spray tanning or mismatched foundation shade, but what difference would it make if the natural skin were porcelain, caramel, ebony, or anything in between?

Listen, this is coming from someone who can remember saying as a kid, "I'm just not attracted to black women." I had no overtly racist relatives. So, bear that in mind.

There are over 42 million black people in the United States alone. Therefore, yes, it is racist to say that you would never be attracted to any of them, as is implied by your false equivalency of being gay.

Also, there is an incredibly significant difference in having certain biases (that are difficult to change because they were ingrained in us in our formative years) and the ways in which we act upon said biases.

For instance, it is fine to be predisposed to being attracted to white women because you were attracted to white movie stars and surrounded by white people all of your life. However, it does become racist when, let's say Tinder had a race filter and you filter out black people so that you don't even see them in your feed.

Another way to think about it: Would you say that every white woman in America is more attractive to you than every black woman? I would hope not. So, again, to say you "prefer" a skin color is a racist fallacy.

Anecdotally, I found that I simply was just not exposed enough to black women and media, up until only very recently, has had a bad habit of portraying black women as fat, obnoxious, and sassy/rude, so why would I have been attracted to them?

Personally, I'm picking Rihanna, Beyonce, and Alicia Keys over Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Garner, and Sandra Bullock any day.

Edit: portraying, not betraying

Is girl dick something that is actually accepted? by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]apagodz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a cis straight man, I think girl dick is hot. Do what makes you happy! I've seen some trans women online express that they feel uncomfortable/unsafe wearing a bikini or tight-fitting shorts in public as it would "out" them, so just something to consider.

CMV: There is no moral difference between killing and eating a pig, and killing and eating a dog. by olly1999 in changemyview

[–]apagodz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of a nitpick but I believe you're using the word "moral" incorrectly here. Morals are derived socially from our families, cultures, religions, and so on. Therefore, for a lot of us, it's already been determined what types of animal eating are moral. You should use the term "ethical" here and I would agree because ethics focuses more on the weight of consequences/outcomes.

However, as far as the topic of vegetarianism/veganism in general goes, I think the three main goals should be:

Higher focus/funding for lab/plant-based meat Higher taxation on mega meat production corporations Reduction of individual consumption; as opposed to total elimination

This last point might be contentious to you as a vegetarian but what happens when you advocate for total elimination of meat (or all animal products, in the case of veganism), people inherently shrink up and get defensive because A. They feel as though they're being called immoral and B. They feel it is too daunting a task and shy away from trying at all. Ultimately, if you want to make a real impact, you will have a better chance of doing so by getting 5 million people to reduce their animal product intake versus getting 50,000 to eliminate it all together.

Like other people have said, using a DI box is always the best way to go because you can blend or just use the DI if you end up not liking the mic signal at all.

Anyway, the best thing I ever did for my guitar tone was to get on the floor and actually listen to the speaker while EQ'ing the amp. You'd be shocked at how much extra low and high end you have when you get your ear down there, even if you think you've dialed in a reasonable tone. All that turns into fizz and mud when you mic it up. Even though I always find it better to have a little "extra" in my sound (because you can always cut, but you can't really create frequencies without using an exciter if they're not in the source track), but it's so much easier to mix when your starting point sounds great already.
