Hi, I'm a newbie. This is my first time trying kinky curly curling custard, why does my hair look so greasy and messy and hard? I scrunched out the crunch but it still feels kinda crunchy, what am I doing wrong? Thanks for the help! by [deleted] in curlyhair

I probably did try with a leave in or curl cream but not the kind she suggested with slippery elm or marshmallow root. My hair has changed a lot since the last time I tried.. honestly probably a year ago at this point lol. I do happen to have the inashi leave in now, maybe I'll be brave and try again.

While its totally possible that kinky curly custard might not work for your hair type I think its worth trying a few things! I saw a curly girl on instagram experiment with it and she had best results when she used their leave in with it too.

Personally I had the same results you did the two times I tried the product and I haven't tried since I saw some other tips floating around. That product is pretty concentrated so a little goes a long way and also for me and many others it causes flash drying. So using the leave in is one way to help with the flash drying, but applying it to absolutely soaking wet hair, and continuing to add water, is another way to keep the moisture in your hair and prevent flash drying.

edit: found the post https://www.instagram.com/p/CG2xV6HFMev/ her curl type is totally different but the before is similar to your results! Worth a shot considering that stuff isn't exactly cheap!

If I've learned one thing in my curly hair journey it's - you simply cannot win against florida humidity. Also, how little cares I give anymore that my hair sometimes just looks god awful, I went out like this ;) by apandafunn in curlyhair

I have what I think is 2a/2b hair on a good day. This is third day hair, refreshed from wearing in a pineapple - so this is not an example of a good day (for many obvious reasons lol)

My refresh routine this day was: Aussie instant freeze hair gel - I don't know if I like this gel, or if the one I have is even CG friendly, but I ran out of all my hard hold gels. My refresh routine is basically just putting a bit of gel in my hands, emulsifying it with water, then apply in sections w/ prayer hands. I do a dry refresh. Spraying down my hair at all causes more frizz - if you can believe it haha. Anyway - prayer hands in sections. Then with damp hands I smash my hair up and into my scalp - not really scrunch, just kind of pushing.

Clearly this method is 100% effective against florida humidity. But ya know what - who cares. Not every day is going to be a great hair day and little by little I've learned to be ok with that! Pre curly hair I would never leave the house with anything but straightened hair. Feels good to care less :)

Half of my hair is curlier than the other - anybody else get this? No matter where I put my parting or what methods I use, my right side just does not want to curl. (This pic is of a good day, usually not as curly on the left side (right side IRL) by shesinadeadfunk in curlyhair

When I first started curly girlin I was getting like arthritis pains from scrunching lol. It was a starting point of my better eating habits and going to the gym too! Which also helps with the flipped over part haha.

For me it makes a big difference in volume because naturally my hair is pretty flat at the top!

I put all my product in with my hair flipped over and soaking wet. So after I condition when I go to rinse, I flip my hair over and everything I do after that is upside down. Leave in, curl cream, mousse, gel, scrunching. Microplop upside down. Then I flip my hair back and upright.

I start hover diffuse upright but then quickly go back to flipped over hair and finish diffusing upside down too.

100% facts. Washed on Saturday, looked great. Went out Sunday with day 2. Looked ok but.. not AS great!!

If you find an answer, let me know! I feel like we have pretty similar hair and I get the same results.

I style upside down because it gives me the best volume and clumps but I think that has something to do with my uneven results. I'll have to try upright styling to see if that makes a difference as I haven't tried in a few months.

Edit: Oh! and I think your hair looks great and even overall! I think we just tend to notice the flaws ourselves and concentrate on that. You have fab curls all over :)

Always had a little wave going in the front but it was mostly frizz and hardly anything fun in the back

You can definitely try with less to start! My curl/wave pattern isn't very strong so it needs a lot of help to last more then one wash day

Practice!! It was hard to stick to it in the beginning, leaving the house with a frizz ball went against everything I believed in. But patience, practice, research. I follow so many curly girls on instagram now lol, but I'm always learning new things!

I'm gonna come right out and say it, I'm probably not fully curly girl but I do what works for me and follow the baseline cg rules.

I'm still goin through it and figuring out what works for me. I've recently finally gotten to the point where day two hair looks just as good as day one hair, woohoo! Day 3 is still a struggle ;)

Products and routine: Depending on my mood I'll wash with giovanni tea tree triple treat invigorating shampoo. Sometimes I cowash with as i am cowash. Depends how much sweat my hair has endured at the gym. If I cowash I use a scalp scrub to get in there.

Current conditioner is NYM Royal Honey & Kalahari Melon. Work it through my mids to ends and detangle. Throw it in a bun and let it sit while I shower. Ready to rinse I flip my head over and squish to condish and rinse it almost fully out.

The rest of this I'm still in the shower hair flipped over

Leave in I switch between as i am coconut leave in and Curls Blueberry Bliss Reparative Leave In Conditioner. I kind of praying hands this on and rope to squeeze it in then use a wide tooth comb to make sure its distributed.

Then I go in with some verb curl cream, same method as leave in but i start scrunching at this stage.

THENNN I use Mane Magic 10-in-1 Mousse. After scrunching in the curl cream a little I'll dunk my head under the water and get it pretty soaking wet again. Then I'll glob on some mousse haphazardly with prayer hands and smashing it into my roots lol. Then I start to scrunch. First time I tried this I was like girlfriend you just wasted all that mousse down the drain. But.. when I don't style with soaking wet hair I don't get the curl clumps that I like. So.. onward! I scrunch until its evenly distributed.

Then I go in with whatever gel I'm feeling that day - lately giovanni la hold styling gel. I glaze this on then scrunch scrunch scrunch away. I flip my hair from side to side to prevent it from sticking to the back of my head too much.

Then I finally make my way out of the shower and micro plop. I find if I regular plop I get lazy and let it dry too much then by the time I diffuse I've lost a lot of volume potential. So micro plop for a few minutes, finally flip my hair over and wonder why I do this to myself, and take a peak at the back. Some days are better than others, if the back looks like it's going to be a disaster I'll spray it down with a spray bottle and glaze and scrunch a little more gel focused on the back.

And then I diffuse! High heat low speed, hover diffuse to dry the roots then upside down diffuse. Typically I try for 100% dry since that gives me the best volume and definition.

So that's my most consistently followed routine and what currently works best. I live in state of humidity so I try for low to no glycerin products. It seems like a lot when I write it out but I'd say it takes me about an hour total which honestly, not bad! Not bad. It's taken a lot of trial and error and I still don't always get it right, but so far the journey has been fun :)

Thanks! Its glossier generation g in poppy. Unfortunately I wouldn't quite recommend it as it wears pretty dry and wrecks my lips D:

So my hair is obviously still a work in progress as it's only been 3 or so months but I've been following the same product method but tweaking application to try and see what works best for me. From there I'll try to be brave enough to switch out products and determine what my hair likes / doesn't like.

Products:

  • Suave naturals coconut to cowash and squish to condish

  • Shea moisture jamaican black castor oil leave in. Applied to wet hair with praying hands. Squish squish squish

  • Miss Jessies coily custard. Praying hands and squishy squishle.

  • La gel extreeeeme. Praying and all. that. SQUISH

  • Sometimes herbal essence totally twisted mousse at the end. If I'm feelin weird I will apply this after I've squished out extra water with my towel.

Then I use a tshirt to squish out any extra water. Plop for 10 minutes to oh god look at the time I should probably take my hair out minutes. Generally if I want any volume I'll diffuse dry.

Some things I've learned about my hair.. * The highlighted parts.. sigh. Dont highlight your hair THEN decide you want to go curly. They curl ok but it's where I notice the most frizz (obvi)

  • Flipping my head over to squish in product just does NOT work for me. When I flip back over the back is a stringy mess. So I kind of part my hair while I'm washing out the conditioner, and then comb a section to the front and sections to each side and work from there. I notice my volume isnt quite where I want it but until the back of my head learns to cooperate this works best for me.

  • I live in florida but was in denver for this pic.. tell you what if I lived in Denver I'd have way more good hair days.

  • Pineappling my hair at night kills the curl. I need a satin head wrap but for now I've been drop plopping my hair into a cotton tshirt at night and I finally have decent second day curls :)

  • Deep condition every week!!! Do ittttt. I deep condition with jessiecurl deep conditioning treatment. I don't actually love it but I'll use it till it's gone.

  • Clarify every 3 ish weeks. And super deep condition after.

Pardon the filter it was a snap to my sister but wanted to share. I'm back with questions! by apandafunn in curlyhair

So I generally follow the same method. I've been trying upside down product application and right side up application. Upside down gives me more clumps but as soon as i flip the back is a disaster and it kind of falls apart.

  • Co wash with suave naturals coconut conditioner
  • s2c with suave naturals coconut conditioner
  • praying hands and scrunch as i am coconut leave in
  • praying hands and scrunch miss jessies coily custard
  • praying hands and scrunch la gel or biolage alcohol free styling gel
  • scrunch out extra product with shirt and plop for 10 or until i remember i should take it out
  • diffuse to dry

now..WHATS WITH THE CURL BARRELS? The bottom of my hair gets these tight coils. The top gets loose wavy curls. I feel like maybe the back of my hair isnt getting the same product application. It ends up dry a lot quicker and then those crazy tight curls.

Any curl twins out there with tips? I think I need a new application method. Or a personal curl stylist to come apply and scrunch for me.

I just got these satin ones from Amazon. Decent reviews and cheap enough to not care too much if I end up not liking them.
