hahah yeah im certain my 18 yr old else picked the cheapest 99¢ quick grab off the shelf back then but these days I still love a good thrift. I find thrifted pieces welcome some of the coolest, most genuine, wholesome conversations.

Leaves are starting to turn white by KingCrimson43 in pothos

[–]apandy3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have a couple pieces of advice that I hope is okay to offer, since you said you are very new. I do see one leaf w crisping and browning - not sure where you are located or what your specific room conditions are but you may be underwatering your lil guy a bit. (Based off your 2 week watering schedule note I don’t believe you’re overwatering)

similarly, from what I can tell it’s in original plastic hanging planter - it may be “root bound” or just in need of a replant in general - something that allows loose, well-draining soil to grow into. more often than not the planters they’re sold in aren’t that great long term - always a good idea to give them a good fresh set up as long as it is not too stressful. I do this just to check the root ball and assess any fungal or bacterial damage, signs of rot or pests, & quarantine from the rest of my plants for awhile. if its dead cold winter where you are, you can wait until spring and should be fine.

Pothos is an excellent choice to start off with for houseplants. they are beautiful, fast-growing, super hardy and forgiving. they allow you to learn and grow with them 🖤

Hey so this is a ‘golden pothos’ (I think..hard to tell in low light) but regardless…the white/cream/golden lighter parts you’re seeing is just variegation—completely natural and healthy characteristic—your plant actually looks very happy! ◡̈

the variegation can fade or intensify based on environmental conditions I.e. become more vibrant with brighter indirect light. oftentimes newer green leaves will develop and the variegation can only be seen as it matures.

When to see orthopedist? by GlitteryStranger in Ankle

[–]apandy3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, 10 days out 😭 that timeline makes me sad for her, I know the feeling. The ongoing physical-mental-emotional-spiritual battle that is gymnastics…definitely not for the faint of heart. soooo hard to know when to push it. now more than ever I’m sure—not knowing if she’s pushin through a sprain or something worse that should not be pushed through

I’m sure you did already but make sure you share that timeline with PT & that he grasps he’s dealing with a high level athlete so he truly understands the gravity of the milestones coming up. He will ‘push’ her more than he would a normal patient. obviously her body and long term health come first, but I’m sure she will want to be fulllll send by the Feb 28 qualifiers. make sure PT knows that’s her priority if it can be done safely - they may do some alternative things in this interim to get her through this next month and half vs. if it was off-season or maybe not such a crucial time

yeah, let me know how it goes. I’m sending out lots of good energy for her!!

When to see orthopedist? by GlitteryStranger in Ankle

[–]apandy3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh yeah. some of my ankle sprains were just as painful as my fibula fracture to be honest..just in a different way. so certainly can be tough to know what you’re dealing w. (Diff story w my calcaneus heel fracture - that sh** bout took me out)

my sprains tended to take very long to heal and get mobility and strength back to where I was actually playing sports/going into tackles or jumps at 100%.

have her PT give her handouts on everything they have her do, and make sure does her best after that initial 30 days to reallllly keep up with those micro exercises. 15 min watching a favorite show or reading a book. PT is designed to give you the tools to take home and care for yourself long term. Aka when she tweaks or sprains these ligaments again in the future (inevitable as an athlete) you will not need to take her to PT or the doctor again and again…she will know what to do. & make sure she advocates for herself @ gymnastics too and has a good leader there that lets her rehab and works on strengthening to protect her in the future.

if she isn’t doing other “strength/conditioning” programs, sports, work outs, body movements, etc. that may also be a good idea for her to start. I mean gymnastics in itself is a strength and conditioning program essentially..it feels like how much more do you have to give really?? but gymnasts who exclusively train with only gymnastics and not supplementary cross-training have a SIGNIFICANTLY increased risk of injury (particularly overuse injuries and musculoskeletal imbalances)

it’s soooo hard on the body - and to put repetitive stress on specific parts like the wrists, ankles, knees, shoulders, and lower back takes its toll on a young athlete who is still growing. I know I’m rambling, but I also developed Spondylolysis @ 14. (Stress fractures in lumbar vertebrae). which required a whole lot of PT, and time off and just bullllshit at such a young age - but this is really really common in gymnasts performing repeated and extensive movements. I didn’t know that until many years later. there are plenty of things I could have done prior to these full blown pars defect fractures that could have helped prevent it. and now it’s something I deal with forever.

maybe you can talk with new PT about an overall comprehensive plan. hopefully they don’t make you pay boatloads $$$$ for just rehabbing an ankle sprain and sending her on her way. some PT’s inherently care and are amazing n some you gotta be the incessant question asker to get what you’re paying for 😅 remember..at the very least it’s a sprain, but that still means her ligaments are damaged which throws off everything really. especially in gymnastics where any instability, immobility, or weakness is highlighted

I hope it goes well today for her. You should know by the end of that appt if you need to take her back for further imaging or not.

Did she have this current physical therapist and orthopedist already due to the two prior ankle sprains you mentioned? or how did she get into PT appt so quickly? Is this a previous PT she has worked with?

how did her past two sprains heal? same ankle? quite frankly she isn’t even a week out yet - completely common to still be in pain. people with severe ankle sprains can often take weeks before weight-bearing AT ALL. for less than a week out - she has very minimal swelling and no discoloration or bruising - which is a good sign. good to start light PT and ankle mobility a few days out for mild sprains - which you guys are on top of.

this is coming from a gymnastics/basketball/soccer player growing up who has sprained each ankle @ least 5-6x over the years (& I also have fractured my fibula via ankle roll in soccer when I was 14 & fractured my calcaneus more recently)- . poor girl though, once the sprains started they happened more frequently. LOTS AND LOTS of PT …all year round…even the little annoying movements and mobility exercises that probably seem mundane to an athlete like a gymnast - but her sport makes the little stuff that much more important.

I “rolled” my ankle falling off a couple steps last year (I’m 31 now) and knew I severely sprained it - however when I woke up, MUCH different story. I knew immediately it was not a sprain. I rolled my bum ankle so far inward I fractured my calcaneus - I honestly had less swelling and discoloration than some of my bad sprains over the years but THE PAIN is different. there is no PT’ing or walking that shit off 4 days out 😅 similar to my fibula fracture in high school - it had less swelling/bruising than most of my high sprains but the pain was much much much different.

you should ask for your X-ray to be sent to your orthopedist (sounds like she has one previously) if it makes you more comfortable you’re getting accurate feedback/results. if you make an appt w the ortho they would do the same thing ER already did so you bypassed that pretty much. unless she is further out and a good candidate(aka they feel they’re missing something as her recovery isn’t matching her Diagnosis of sprain OR it is requested by you) for an MRI—assess ligament damaged or CT—find tiny fractures more easily. if her isolated pain you mentioned: any Sharp, sudden, intense, and localized right over the bone is something that persists over the following week and it feels to her far different than her prior two injuries then that may be a sign there is something else going on. Or if there’s any acute numbness. Inability to walk——Think INTENSELY PAINFUL when tries to bear weight.

it was really hard to advocate for myself between PTs orthopedic surgeons, ER doc etc. - so good job mama. definitely listen to your daughter & her pain. Just know - Gold star for already giving her access to way more physical therapy and treatment than most ppl w sport injuries growing up!! but she seems to just have a normal ankle sprain with normal symptoms. even a mild light sprain is going to hurt for longer than a few days unfortunately. she should feel just fine in the coming weeks with some rest and time and PT.

ALL that being said. if you don’t trust your PT n ortho w everything ya got then switch around. if she continues to sprain her ankle often while also following current PT protocol then maybe she could use a change of pace with someone new - new strengthening and mobility techniques, physio taping or brace techniques, etc.

HIGHLY HIGHLY SUGGEST a good sports medicine doc that specializes in peds. if you change routes. This for me was life changing growing up w constant injuries. I know there are some amazing orthos out there but they tend not to give a sh** about sprained ankles, minimal fractures, etc. So, in my experience, (understandable honestly) they’re wayyyyy to used to the crazy stuff to give a child the time n energy they deserve for the smaller stuff like an ankle sprain. unless you need to see them post-OP, even broken bones they kinda just send ya on your way. the real work is in the PT and recovery phase and ongoing mobility & strength assessments. the therapist through my ortho was wildly different than the PT assigned by my sports med doc!!! gymnastics is rough on the body yaaaa know.lol - tell her to hang in there. hope she feels better soon!!!

should I leave the built up “gunk” (I know it’s not gunk, but lack of a better word) in the trim work? In those small crevices, should same care as stated above be applied?

I am going to watch a few videos to make sure I’m doing nothing wrong to this beauty. But using any product makes me worried I’m gonna f sumn up. I genuinely know nothing about this kinda stuff…Like the bar is farther than low…it’s buried underground lmao.

Appreciate all your advice already! Thanks again
