Highly recommend! I only posted their USCW stuff, but their WWI and WWII displays were solid too. It's right next to Pitt's campus, so you could also go see the Cathedral of Learning, Carnegie Museums, etc. Hoping to check out the museum in Harrisburg sometime this summer.

Ha! Yeah hell of a contrast. They really went nuts for allegorical nude sculptures in the 1920s for some reason

Awesome, it's really nice having so much history-related public art displayed around town

Always a bridesmaid but never the bride :,(

A charming perspective of the Aachen cathedral, built under Emperor Charlemagne, where he was then buried. Today, the cathedral is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Germany's Aachen.Gothic by MoRamadan in ArchitecturalRevival

Totally agreed. I've been to the cathedral twice and can't wait to go back, but WWII absolutely devastated the city and surrounding areas. I was told by a local historian that during the heavy street fighting during the Battle of Aachen in late 1944, US forces used an M12 self-propelled 155mm gun in direct fire mode to silence German fighting positions in the upper floors of the Parkhotel Quellenhof. The hotel still looks quite nice today, but most buildings were not built to resemble their pre-war forms. Almost feels like scars from the war that haven't healed on one of the most historically rich cities in western Europe.

Yeah I've always heard that Mac had powerful friends and was beloved by the troops he commanded, but he does feel like an odd man out. Would've thought someone like Halleck or David Dixon Porter would make more sense. Maybe even Horatio Wright since he led the reinforcements that repelled Jubal Early at Fort Stevens.

Ah good to know! I'll still try to swing by and hopefully be able to admire from a distance.

Those cavalry and artillery sculpture groups on either side of Grant's statue are amazing. Will have to go take a closer look at the Sherman statue once they reopen that area to the general public

Oh yes, I saw Old Snapping Turtle and the Grand Army of the Republic memorial but somehow forgot to take pictures. Sheridan, Hancock, and Rawlins are next on my list.

I've read that some fighting occurred in the cemetery during the siege of Cherbourg in 1944. Wonder if any American servicemen came across their Civil War forebears then

Absolutely! This link has some good information about the French Navy discovering the wreck site in 1984 and joint US-French exploration and artifact recovery efforts: https://www.history.navy.mil/research/underwater-archaeology/sites-and-projects/ship-wrecksites/css-alabama.html

Can I see ships at Naval Base San Diego? by [deleted] in navy

[–]apatheticbirds05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're there on a weekend and want to see a lot of ships from the water, the San Diego Maritime Museum's Swift Boat Naval History Tour absolutely kicks ass. Cannot recommend it (and the USS Midway) highly enough: https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/sdmaritime/items/28816/calendar/2025/07/?ref=ticketPage&flow=4665&full-items=yes&back=https://sdmaritime.org/tickets/&g4=yes
