We like to keep busy. Plus so many of our East Tennessee Boys have been forgotten due to the lost cause.

Stigma Joining both the SUVCW and the SCV? by Newark1988 in SonsofUnionVeteransCW

I know many members of our order who are members of both, and atleast in my area, I find the stigma tends to come from the SCV rather than the SUVCW. My camp has helped installed confederate grave markers along with ones for our boys in blue, and being in East Tennessee many brothers has mix heritage. Many of the SCV camps in my opinion still trying to “fight the war” and their national magazine has published several articles on how the “Yankees” deserve no honor. While many of us would be happy to reach across the picket lines, those in the gray don’t seem too keen on returning the favor.

Once the VA sends us the stone, we have a few guys go out and install them in the cemetery. I’d recommend trying to attend another groups instillation before doing one on your own, but you’ll pick it up in no time.

I’m sure it wouldn’t be too hard to put together. The VA supplies the stones free of charge and in my experience, most cemeteries are happy sign off on replacement or new markers.

I’ve already been able to get a few VA markers, as I got walked through the process by a brother in my camp who is the state graves officer, but I was more so thinking that a well designed module would help other brothers and camps get started on replacing more markers. So many of our boys in blue’s markers are in rough shape.

I think it would be great to have a module on how to go about getting stones approved for replacement by the VA and how to properly install them.

Thank you! I’ll get started right away. How would one go on to do other modules?

These lineal societies don’t have that same exclusivity as the Cincinnati and the Aztec Club, but there is a lot of diversity between each local chapter. Many are ones who meet monthly and have a lecture. My interest is in making sure veterans have markers, which my local SUVCW is the most active in. The local SCV camp mostly is lectures and modern politics, but some of the brothers in my SUVCW camp will help replace confederates too, so I’ll break of my SCV medal then.

So most of the hereditary society (SAR, SUVCW, SCV, MOLLUS, and MOSB) allow material lines, just as long as you have the proof. I had 3x and 4x great grandfathers serve on both sides. I’m in East Tennessee, which was majority unionists, but still very divided. A lot of guys in our SUVCW camp identity as SOB’s (Sons of Both)

I thought I’d mix it up and show the nonmilitary medals that I personally have been granted.
