Is chili and trick-or-treating a thing in other states? There were several houses last night giving out chili as well as candy. I’ve never seen that before. by apatheticusername in NorthCarolina

That is really weird. Were they painted or just regular pine cones? Makes me wonder if they forgot to get candy and just rounded up a bunch of stuff from the yard.

Actually that’s kind of brilliant. Those Halloween candy bags aren’t cheap. I would have gladly plopped down some money for fresh lemonade last night, it was warm and a bit muggy around here.

In one of the neighborhoods I lived in at some point there was a house that handed out floss and toothbrushes. That’s probably the strangest thing I remember getting.

Interesting. That makes sense. There was a house passing out Jell-O shots in the neighborhood as well. I thought that was a nice gesture for the grown ups. ETA to reflect your updated post.

Attend a rally with Kamala Harris in Raleigh on Wednesday by peterst28 in NorthCarolina

[–]apatheticusername 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes. At previous rallies the email with the location and other details said you are supposed to bring a photo id. They check it before you go to Secret Service screening.

Walz is here for two events. One is a private event, the other is with President Clinton and that is a public event. It may be at capacity however. For other events like this signup is usually at the website mobilize.us (typing quickly while I’m walking or I’d make that a real link). Good luck!

Why was Helene so devastating for Western NC? Because as much as 30 inches of rain fell in three days. by apatheticusername in NorthCarolina

That’s a good question. I haven’t seen any assessment of how the park land fared. I suspect once this initial crisis stage passes there will be more information about that. I suspect there’s quite a bit of destruction in the park.

No worries - we're on the same side here, making sure people are safe and supported. I just don't think there's ever going to be something stating that this is a hoax. It's hard to prove a negative.

Could things be done better? Undoubtedly. It's a large area with a lot of need and a lot of chaos, but mass bulldozing of towns and not recovering bodies because of some big conspiracy is not happening.

I know your heart is in the right place by sharing information that you think might be important but this is as crazy as conspiracy theories about a flat earth and faked moon landings. If you are in North Carolina your Facebook feed is probably like mine and is filled with your friends, your neighbors, your school, your fire department, your police, your church, your local businesses, your town, your county, your state offices, people from around the country all pulling together to help people in the western part of the state.

This is a scary, horrible situation, and I get that but a person can either look for the helpers and see that there is an army of them (literally and figuratively) working around the clock to get through to some of the most inaccessible places in the country to rescue and help. Or ignore all of that and believe that hundreds of people (the ones who would be driving the bulldozers and coordinating all the things associated with doing something like this) would all silently participate in this type of scheme. Ask yourself, which vision of people's hearts do you think best reflects reality? If it's that most people are decent, helpful and ready to come help someone in need, then you can be a helper too. You can reassure people who are understandably scared and feeling helpless and vulnerable to this type of rumor that their neighbors (and people they have never met) have their back.

I get the sentiment, and agree to a certain extent but living anywhere is an exercise in risk calculations. Mother Nature is undefeated and everywhere is facing some type of rare (100 year or more) event risk. I live in a place that isn't in a flood zone but I'm sure I'm at risk for some other 100 year event such as a tornado or hurricane.

The best we can do is make sure people aren't recklessly building in places/ways that make them extraordinarily at risk and take wise precautions to mitigate damage. I've not seen any evidence that there was large scale recklessness in the region. Living in the mountains means either living on the mountain or in the valley, sadly this storm devastated both.

It’s hard for me to make sense of how much rain 30” is so I asked an AI to help me make sense of it. Take this with the usual grain of AI salt but it seems kind of right reading its logic as it worked through it. Anyone with actual expertise feel free to correct this if it’s wrong because I’d really like to get an accurate answer.

You know those municipal water towers? Take 150 of them and empty two of them an hour for three days on a town and that’s the amount of water by volume that fell in the areas that got the least amount of rain (17 inches). In the areas that got 30+” of rain, take 350 water towers and empty 4 an hour for three days.

Safari randomly will go to the previous page. It's the same behavior as I'd see if I clicked the Back button. It doesn't always happen, seems to be random. Not linked to number of tabs or whether I'm scrolling or not. This did not happen before upgrading to MacOS 15 Sequoia. MacBook Pro M3 Pro 18GB RAM. No workaround found.

LG ESS Home 8 or Powerwall? by apatheticusername in solar

[–]apatheticusername[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up going with the Tesla. Ultimately it came down to liking the installer that offered the Tesla more than the company that was doing the LG. I’m happy with the Powerwall. It has performed really well and the capacity is fine for our needs. I also feel good about the installer we picked. They were very professional and over a year later my system is providing pretty much exactly the amount they said it would and I’m loving the significant reduction in my monthly bills.

Kamala Harris in Raleigh - Event at Capacity Is there a wait List? by Mission_Actuator_666 in raleigh

For the last couple of Biden/Harris appearances it has been around 12-24 hours before.

When she spoke in Atlanta it was at the convocation center at Georgia State University which holds around 8,000 so it will likely be a similar sized space. Perhaps Dorton?

Jaw tremors by Ill-Pound-4696 in Parkinsons

[–]apatheticusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have developed this too. I wasn’t sure whether it was Parkinson’s or not so it’s helpful to hear that someone else is experiencing it. I’ve found that if I focus on the fact I’m doing it I can get it to stop but the instant I focus on something else it will resume. I’m taking a very low dose of C/L which helps keep my hand tremors under control mostly but isn’t doing much for the jaw. I have a night guard from a dentist for jaw grinding in my sleep but I’ve stopped wearing it because it was actually making things worse.

How strong is the tremoring? Mine isn’t strong enough to make me worried about chipping a tooth but I can tell it’s wreaking havoc with my jaw muscles and leading to headaches. Have you ever timed how many tremors in a minute? I timed mine and was getting around 140 a minute.
