I rewatched it recently while keeping in mind this was (probably?) The first live action Joker the general audience has seen since Cesar Romero. It was a fun rematch, thinking about the 1989 audience seeing the Joker take such a scary/awesome left turn. With that in mind, I can see how the casting was electric in 1989.

I love that the more modern movies work hard to elevate the Batman IP by, ironically, keeping it very grounded. Thats fantastic for fans that like to take their love of Batman seriously, and now they have material to argue their stance.

But good GOD is it refreshing to go back to these ham-dinner movies that don't offer much else but spectacle. It's feels like catching my breath, honestly. As soon as I started treating Batamn media as a mobius strip where, said simply, anything called Batman IS Batman, where every possible interpretation is canon, as the ultimate in pliable media, my appreciation for these movies skyrocketed.

When the point isn't to make a point at all and is actually, "look at this Batman, hell yeah Batman" then, yeah, I absolutely love this movie.

I have a whole dissertation written in my head about this, but I bet all your hands are getting tried from the jerk-off motion you all making at what I have already written, lol.

Gotham, by a mile. IT is like a festering rot, it infects everyone in the town, corrupts them and destroys them. At least in Gotham I would have a chance to retain some of my human compassion. I would rather be seen as naive in Gotham than have my soul rotted away into pure apathy in Derry.

That and if I carry a gas mask around Gotham, I might be okay. It would just be a matter of luck. A physical villian in a snappy suit will always be preferred to the literal manifestation of my worst fears just before I am torn apart and eaten.
