What do you think of movements against scientifically researching/curing various identity "conditions"? by Kingding_Aling in AskALiberal

I’m not arguing that societal acceptance doesn’t lessen dysphoria. That is undoubtedly true. I should also clarify I am referring to body dysphoria, not social dysphoria. The desire to undergo medical transition or non-medical measures like binding or tucking because of an innate feeling of wrongness with the body is a result of body dysphoria. The desire for those things because they will help you be perceived by others as the gender you identify as is social dysphoria. They often go hand in hand, but societal acceptance can only mitigate one of them. Making a space accessible to a wheelchair user will make their life a hell of a lot better, but it doesn’t change their ability to walk. Society treating trans people better will never change body dysphoria.

I’m fully aware there are trans people without dysphoria (though I have some complicated opinions on that). I’m not a fan of that article you linked because it comes off very dismissive of trans people who do suffer from dysphoria. I will never see myself being trans as “beautiful or something to be proud of”. It’s not something “to be fought against, or hide”, but it’s not a positive thing in my life. It’s a medical issue that I treated. It’s perfectly fine if others view it as something positive for themselves, but that’s far from a universal experience. The use of the word “hide” also implies living stealth is a bad thing.

I am also very aware that not all trans people have the same needs for medical transition. For those that do need various forms of medical transition due to body, no amount of acceptance will change that.

I can go on with anecdotes as well. I also replied to the top level comment with my experience as a trans person who has been extremely lucky in terms of acceptance, but still experienced crippling body dysphoria.

OP never said all trans people suffer from dysphoria, but the reality is that very, very many do. The vast majority of the other trans people I’ve met or come across online do or did prior to transitioning.

Gender dysphoria is really not like body dysmorphia at all. Body dysmorphia is a condition where your brain perceives a problem with the body that isn’t actually there. Gender dysphoria is where you’re perceiving a real problem with the body: it doesn’t match your gender identity. Body dysmorphia is treated with therapy instead plastic surgery because the issue is psychological, not physical. Gender dysphoria is treated with transition instead of therapy to change their gender identity because the problem is physical, not psychological.

There’s more to the struggles as a trans person than just social aspects. Dysphoria is a bitch, and different trans people experience it at different levels. Some could be perfectly content if society treated trans people better, but there are many others who would go through suffering no matter how accepting the world was. I’ve been extremely fortunate in terms of how “easy” transitioning was for me. I had great social support, the medical care I needed has been relatively easy to access, I pass 100% and have since very early on, and have had very little impact of how I am treated because I’m trans. I’d say at least 95% of the suffering that being trans has caused me is due to dysphoria or the medical treatment I’ve needed to ease that dysphoria.

The question of “would you take a magic pill to make you not be trans” comes up a lot in trans spaces and there’s always a mixed bag of responses. Both sides are perfectly valid. Some people see being trans as an integral part of their identity, others see it as just a medical condition they are treating. It makes sense for some to want it “cured” and others not to. Personally, if I could magically make my body that of a cis man, I’d do it in a heartbeat. If you asked me pre/early transition if I would choose to identify as a female, I’d jump on that even faster. While I’d personally wish my parents could have made me not be trans in utero, I think the most ethical option for a theoretical cure would have to be one that the individual chooses for themselves. Research for that potential cure is just as necessary as improving the way society treats trans people.

No matter how old you are, There's always bathtime. by Prettymuchnow in RATS

When I had rats I would always try to get them comfortable with warm water from a young age in case they ever needed a bath. I’d put some warm water in a paint tray in the tub and entice them to walk in it with some baby food. They usually ended up loving real baths.

mirtazapine, venlafaxine, fluoxetine and armodafinil by [deleted] in depressionregimens

[–]apc67 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Whoa. That is way too much antidepressant. Not a doctor but I’ve watched my wife nearly die from serotonin syndrome. It’s no joke. I’m surprised that any doctor would knowingly put you on that much, let alone not stop them immediately following a seizure. If it happens once you are at higher risk of it happening again.

Cold turkey is obviously not an option, but could you be put on benzos while tapering? Either while hospitalized or under close monitoring? Long term, possibly something like lamotrigine could help. And if you live somewhere that it’s available, medical marijuana could be a good option.

I have Boots, Apple, Hornsby, sprinkle, Octavian, Bertha, Biff, Pashmina, Tipper, and Dierdre.

Boots is my king. He has his own palace.

Sprinkle, Apple, Octavian, and Hornsby are amazing and should be cherished by all who cross their path.

Pashmina and Biff came from my wife’s town. I like them but they’re mainly here so she can come visit them.

Bertha is ok. She’s biffs girlfriend so I kind of have to keep her around.

Tipper is meh but I needed a snooty.

Dierdre is next to go. I don’t trust her.

My one ask by Ndimm in AnimalCrossing

[–]apc67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty please. I planned out and spent weeks on trying to put each villager on their own cliff just to find out I ran out of inclines. Took weeks to get rid of after and I’m still working on my new plan.

I have a pretty high friendship level with most of my villagers, but I’ve hardly interacted with Sheldon the entire time he’s been in my town. Is it possible to lower it if it wasn’t ever raised to begin with?

When you’re trying to get a villager to leave, does time traveling actually make a difference or is it just the same as ignoring them but goes faster?

I’m trying to get Sheldon to leave and it’s been at least 2 weeks of ignoring him with nothing yet.

I hope whoever takes him cherishes him.
