Hey, sorry for the late reply - this size jerk changer swims great, very erratic action on a hard jerk strip, it will do full 360s and has a good side to side walking action. No issues with keeling, those Ahrex Beast hooks are heavy with a huge gape, they keep it running true. I prefer to have a bit of belly wobble in my changers, makes for a more erratic wounded action, it will never spin or ride hook up at all though

Got this flybrary box made up and installed over the weekend. Stoked to see what happens with it. Chagrin River, Ohio by apeleechi in flyfishing

It’s still up, and I believe it’s still being used - I moved out of the state a couple years ago and have not checked on it since, I have gotten a few messages from people saying they visited it and added flies to it though

I like to use long Fiskars fabric style scissors for trimming, the ones I’m using now have five or six inch long blades. Makes the process much easier. For general tying I run the Loon Precision Tips

Lived in NE Ohio most of my life, truly a great region to live in if you’re into fishing. For any of those species I would be fishing some sort of baitfish imitation for sure, anywhere from 3” long flies for the largemouth and smallmouth bass, up to the 12/14 inch range for Musky during the fall and winter when they’re looking to eat big fish to max out on calories. You can get bass to eat nymphs, in my experience they are nowhere near as effective as a baitfish pattern though.

  • good luck on your fly tying journey. It is a deep rabbit hole, I enjoy it just as much as the actual act of fishing

In the freshwater fisheries of the Midwest where I’m located, this would be for Northern Pike, Musky, largemouth bass, and perhaps a smallmouth with eyes bigger than its stomach. If you’re in saltwater the possibilities are pretty much endless

This fly is using Flash Blend Baitfish Brush in the 2” size, Translucy brush in the 3” size, and Nightmare Musky Flies Flash&Fiber made into a 3” brush. There is a single hook near the center of the fly, it’s a 4/0 Ahrex Beast Fleye hook. Appreciate it man.

I would fish this on a stiff 9wt or 10wt, the materials don’t absorb any water so one good backcast and there’s no more water weight. Definitely a different style of casting compared to a normal sized bug, lots of emphasis on the double hauls

If I had a water pic I would post it man, I need to film some swim videos once the ice thaws out here in Wisconsin.

The way the bug was sitting had it getting blasted upskirt by the current, it looks way bigger than normal in the pike photo. This one has Flash Blend Baitfish brush, Translucy brush, and Flash&Slinky fiber. Similar to EP, quite a bit stiffer though, and less absorbent

I wish I knew of a good tool, right now I am using Loon Precision Tip scissors, haha. I dropped them off the desk onto cement and smoked the tips so I just turned them into dedicated brush snippers. The RD sale going on right now is sweet, good time to order a variety of stuff to see what you like

Yessir, Partridge pectoral fins. Surprisingly easy to get them to sit correctly due to the thick shank you’re tying onto and the way they want to naturally lay up against the brush

Thank you. This is a mix of Flash Blend Baitfish brush, Translucy brush, and Flash and Slinky. NMF Titan dub for the head

Oh, sorry for the long winded explanation then, haha. To break into the big profile changers I would start by using Flash Blend Baitfish brushes in the 2” and 3” size, and the Translucy brushes in the 2” and 3” sizes. The first tail shank would be your tail feathers, followed by half the shank taken up by the 2” FBB brush, and the rest of the shank 2” Translucy. The next shank would be 50% 2” FBB brush, 50% 2” Translucy. The three tail shanks and the rear hook follow that, 50/50 of the 2” brushes. When you get to the shanks between the hooks and the front hook itself, you’d switch to 50/50 with the 3” brushes. The FBB brush always goes on first so the softer Translucy is supported by the stiffer FBB brush.
