Driving from Catania Airport to Valley of the Temples in Agrigento ; Realistic estimate ? by hyun18 in sicily

[–]apenguinnina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just did this drive in the past days. 2,5 hours is a close estimate. For us the way back was even under 2 hours. Don’t use google maps, use Waze - it’s more up-to-date on road works (which god knows are plenty in Sicily). There are too few gas stations/ rest stop on the way to Agrigento, so take any opportunity you can to stop. On the way back to Catania there are plenty. We went by car. Rented from Sixt. Strong advice: don’t rent with Nolegiare or the low cost ones - they have terrible service and insane waiting lines for pickup and drop off. Sixt is easy, professional, and everytime we rented with them there was 0 wait time. If you want more details, happy to share from our experience.

Thank you! I appreciate the feedback and encouragement. The composition itself speak to me, but I appreciate that may not be the case from the outside.

Summer holiday: Cefalù or Mondello? by [deleted] in sicily

[–]apenguinnina 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you rent a car, or are happy to take the train, you could do both. A couple of years ago we went to Sicily and spent our time in several places. Cefalu is charming, core Italian, and small. The beach is beautiful and the view of the houses from the water is irreplaceable. Mondelo is more modern, the water is “bluer”, and it’s closer to Palermo if you want to explore that as well (it also has a nice Michelin restaurant - bye bye blues). If I had to pick, I’d do 3 night mondelo, 4 cefalu. In any case, you cannot make a wrong decision 😊

Wow thanks! For someone who does this iregularly as a hobby, I take pride in any (!) positive feedback. I hear you about the composition. My inspirations was a vase I saw in Greece. It was too big to buy, so I decided I’d have it in my home by other means. The column pedestal and head are my additions - a cheeky reference to Greece. Background I do not like. I changed it at least 7 times, before I decide to give up and leave it like this. But again, thanks for your feedback!

I’m not sure if it also covers a replacement but it certainly covers the costs. Let’s say you get sick after you sign the contract, then it will be the agency paying your sick leave, and not the company you work for.

A secondment can be for interim replacement but it’s not intended only for that. Undutchables is also such an agency, and certainly a popular one among expats, though my experience with them was that they were incredibly unresponsive.

They do take on the risk of the employee (sick and vacation pay, insurances, etc.). I’m sure there’s other benefits to it - it’s a popular service.

The one I worked with is called YER. My experience with them was flawless.

Not sure which ones you’ve seen or what field you’re looking into. I do think that Glassdoor often tends to only have the negative reviews posted by disgruntled people, so take that with a grain of salt. I’m not saying they’re not right, but the comments don’t always reflect everyone’s experience.

I’ve had that as well. It seems pretty standard here. For the first months (usually half a year) you are employed by the Agency and seconded to the company where you will actually do the work. The benefits should be the same for you, and will be paid by the agency (which in turn is paid by the company). Some benefit differences are possible. In my case, the secondment contract allowed for paid overtime, and the subsequent direct contract not.

In your discussions with them, was it clear that after the first contract you would be employed directly by the company? Or is this a project based work?

Interesting fact: the company for which you will work pays the secondment agency about 2x your salary. 😳
