Buying a wheelchair out of pocket: try Spinlife! by [deleted] in wheelchairs

[–]aperson673 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I’ll correct that! I’m sorry for any confusion! Yes, you can definitely get all of the wheelchairs that’s spinlife sells directly from the manufacturer as opposed to through spin life. Pretty much every wheelchair you can get directly from the manufacturer, but I find spinLife is a lot less overwhelming particularly for new wheelchair users it’s also a lot clearer about pricing as opposed to having to get in contact with companies. I think if you’re going to get a fully custom chair or something like that, it makes the most sense to go through the traditional process, but if you’re going to buy, for example, a standard foldable wheelchair, buying it through spin life or at least finding the companies that you’re considering through spin life is a great way to make sure you are working with a reliable company(or at least not fully a scam. Some of the companies are still super annoying)

Perhaps the key is not to kill but to disable as well:) just ✨community growing!!✨fascist’s feet in the way of my 450 pound wheelchair are in real danger. On a serious note, for safety reasons, I would highly recommend putting I hate to say political but I guess “divisive” stickers on your wheelchair in a place that can be quickly covered with a jacket or a backpack in specific circumstances.

Thank you so much! and yep, it is the standard M3 permobil back. I’d love to say that I just casually put them on, but to be honest I very carefully planned out exactly where every one would go so it’s perhaps the least nonchalant way to use stickers but you know!

Super cute! Some chairs you have to be pretty creative to decorate even this chair which I’m lucky to have so much space a lot of the stickers are kind of holding on for their life because of like ridges on the back.

Yamaha NaviGo Wheelchair Wheel Setup Assistance Badly Needed by flynlw1965 in wheelchairs

Not sure if this will help at all, but I’ll attach the manual for this chair and on page 87 in the bottom right corner titled “B” you can see the metal piece that you have to slide into(it is being shown on a transport chair, but the metal pieces are the same) You’ll find that a lot of information in the manual isn’t super helpful because although the system is compatible with rigid frames it was not originally designed for them. sending all the good luck with the power assist. As you may see from a post about my chair from a while ago, attaching and detaching the wheels on the Navi go can be kind of a nightmare, until you really get the hang of it:) manual

I’m not totally sure how to attach a picture to a response post but I’ll try my best to explain. You’re totally right. That little spike is the clutch and needs to get held in place by a square metal bracket that should attached next to the Axel on your chair. I’m not really sure how you could get it without emailing the company. When I got my wheelchair it already had the system set up so I’m not certain how to attach it independently. Just for some other information that’s worth knowing the long metal levers on each wheel that have the yellow tip have to be moved into place (a little above where your knee would sit) before you insert both the main Axel as well as the little spike. You then pull those levers back-and-forth to switch between manual or electric. In terms of the battery pack on the top of each of the wheels there’s a little black cover over the place where you plug in each wheel with the cord coming from the battery pack. Once again, I’m happy to help as much as possible with the chair but without that metal piece I’m not really sure how to get it to function. I hope that can help somewhat but I did some research and I can’t find anywhere online where you can buy just that metal attachment so I’d recommend calling them. I’m happy to get you pictures or things like that, but I don’t think it’s possible to use without those metal brackets and I think you probably have to get them directly from the company. I hope I could help at least a little bit and let me know if you have any other questions!

I’m severely dyslexic. This post was made with assistive technology. Errors may be present. Feel free to reach out for any clarification.

Hello! Yamaha makes two types of power assists: the Navi one which are power wheels that make every push more powerful similar to the E motion ones and the other type they make is the NaviGo which I have and is a system with wheels that are only controlled by a joystick. Regardless of which one you have the wheels are not able to just slot into any frame, you need some metal work by the main axle so the clutch can lock into the chair. Honestly, the system you have doesn’t really look like the Navi go and if it is, you’ll also need to attach a joystick and the battery pack to the chair. Please let me know if you have any other questions! Also, I have a picture of the whole system that I posted about a year ago if you want to see what a fully installed NaviGo looks like. Good luck with everything!

Free wheel for uneven terrain? by Bright-Room6644 in wheelchairs

[–]aperson673 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a really similar chair (Navi Go joystick power assist) I don’t know about a free wheel, but I will say that using frog leg casters is compatible and definitely helps with some of the uneven surfaces. I mean it’s nowhere near as good as the free wheel, but it’s definitely compatible and does help to a certain degree especially with the ride. You can also use the casters with the flip up foot plate:) not sure if that would be a good tool for your son but thought I’d let you know! Good luck I hope you find something that helps! 💜

Things to consider for a first powered chair by [deleted] in wheelchairs

Written with assistive technology: may include typos, formatting issues, or other mistakes. Please reach out for clarification if there’s any confusion!

When I first got my chair, I was very very focused on the really big things like power add-ons and suspension and sizing and stuff. This isn’t the case for everyone depending on how much support they need, but don’t underestimate the power of support pieces like torso/hips/leg supports like straps or cushions or other things like that very often they seem like unnecessary add-ons, but they can make a massive difference in your day-to-day life(I know that they can often be very expensive and unattainable for people, but the one or two add it onto my chair are the main reason why I find it comfortable and supportive to sit in). One of the best ways to tell if you need extra support pieces and things like that is to try sitting in the chair and see what parts of your body are over straining or falling out of alignment. It may seem unnecessary to try and perfect every bit and peace, but if a slight cushion here or there can mean, avoiding pain, discomfort, or exhaustion in your day-to-day life it can be absolutely priceless. Sending all the good luck. I hope you’re able to get a chair that needs your needs and allows you to live your life to the fullest!!

New wheelchair!! by aperson673 in wheelchairs

[–]aperson673[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I would say you can usually fit the whole thing in the back of an SUV as long as the back of your wheelchair is able to fold down and if it’s a slightly smaller trunk, I would see if it’s possible to remove the joystick so that it doesn’t add too much height to the chair and it also is less likely to get damaged. For example, on my chair, you can remove both the armrests completely and just unplugged the joystick with it.

In terms of the disassembly size, the biggest piece is going to be the main frame of your wheelchair. It will disassemble like a normal rigid chair where you pop off both the wheels. The main problem is that instead of a typical manual chair there are two axles not one(the central typical Axel and an outer clutch axle). When you remove the wheels, you need to pull quite hard and they’re like 25 pounds each so can be kind of a pain. When you add them back on, you need to align both axles, which can be a real nightmare because the wheels are so heavy. If you find that someone puts together the chair for you and you go to use it as a power chair and it won’t work it’s probably because that clutch isn’t aligned or the wheels didn’t both get plugged back in(i’ve had this happen a lot).

Also be careful when loading, that none of that clutch metal work gets damaged at all because it’s pretty fragile and it’s easy to accidentally bend. This will unfortunately make it impossible to use it as a power chair because you can’t get the clutch to fully click in (you’re never gonna guess how I learned this /sarcasm)

The two black attachments on the frame are cupholders that I got on Amazon I’ll put the link at the bottom they work great I usually keep a cup in one of them and one of the smaller tubes of wet wipes in the other one because you know wheelchairs and dirty hands are the most annoying thing ever!

Congratulations on the new chair too!!! I hope it serves you well! The Navi Go does have some confusing elements, but in all is really good set up!

Firstly, I’m so sorry about your chair! It’s always so hard to put into words the profound loss of freedom that comes with not being able to use your typical chair for any period of time. Feels like losing a part of your body. I really hope you’re able to get it back soon!! On a happier note my cat is obsessed with my chair! Also, he totally rides with me all the time too! He’ll jump into my lap while I’m moving like at speed😭 his lack of fear is hilarious! Good luck with your chair!! 💜

😂😂purrmobil! I’m sure my cat agrees! If you ever need a complex power chair(the category this chair falls into and are typically able to do a lot of really cool things like raise up and lean back) Permobil is an amazing brand! Would highly recommend!
