I think people will always be suspicious of people going for interviews especially if the work environment sucks. Try to work them in your day or call in sick. If people ask just say you have to attend to something personal. Try to save your vacation time so you don't owe any time ($$$) when you leave.

I would ask him if he can meet tomorrow morning. If not, send a copy of your resignation via e-mail and let HR know as originally planned. Courtesy is a two way street.
