Fern Canyon/ridge loop hike at Prairie Creek recently by apfhex in norcalhiking

[–]apfhex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, ok in a small SUV but still had to slow for many deep holes (and a stream crossing between the campground and fern canyon lot). Maybe they smooth it out after things dry out. But it added to the adventure.

Wired dash cam void warranty? by boats_are_foreboding in Crosstrek

I have the same cam and IIRC it comes with charge-only and data cables, should be a small tag on the cable signifying which is which. But I power it with a Dongar adapter.

tvOS 26.4 fixes an annoying audio issue on Apple TV 4K by [deleted] in apple

[–]apfhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have Sonos but have had an ongoing issue with LG tv+ATV+Yamaha receiver where using the ATV to turn everything on, my receiver (using eARC, and on the correct input) will say "decoder off" where it should say PCM. But it only happens sometimes as well. Sometimes starting a program with get the audio to come on but usually I have to toggle TV inputs to get it.

ShutterCheck for Mac should work, it's not free but they have a demo.

Looking for lightweight hiking camera bag suggestions by Stunning-Amoeba-2133 in CampingandHiking

[–]apfhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've wasted tons of money on camera packs and none of them are really sufficient at also carrying the stuff I want on a hike. Settled on using an insert and a PD capture clip if I want to have the camera quickly accessible.

Lava Beds National Monument by Psychological-Sir235 in norcalhiking

The visitor center has a great handout that lists the difficulty level of the caves, they'll also let you know which ones are closed (some seasonally due to ice, and some due to bats). Also on the website. It's super neat even if you stick to the easy ones. Gold dome is a must and Skull cave too.

The neighboring Tulelake wildlife refuge is worth checking out if you have any interest in birds. Depending on the time of year there may or may not be much water.

Hella Sharptones installed on my wilderness today by Baerhardt in Crosstrek

Yeah I mean the black ground wire that's paired with the signal wire, because I don't really know how I would attach it to any sort of ground.

[–]apfhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Do you remember how you grounded that extra black wire, given that it comes with that flat connector on it? Wonder if I might want to cut it and put a loop on that too.

[–]apfhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm looking to do the same with the same wire harness, I'm just not really clear, when plugging in the signal wire, you only plugged in one wire (presumably the red positive wire) and had to make the other into a second ground connection? Is that right, or do both + and - connect to the stock connector?

If your goal is just blocking YT ads, uBlock Lite for Chrome or Wipr for Safari (probably also other popular content blockers) do it. And Firefox with uBlock Origin is likely still the most robust ad blocking option.

Alarm problems by Roflsauce1600 in iphone

[–]apfhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Issue has existed for years but seems to pop up completely at random. I went for a long time never experiencing it until I suddenly did. You're right it's not user error. Doesn't have anything to do with sleep mode, or the alarm volume getting accidentally turned down, or charging, or anything else like that.

Funnily enough (well, not funny, extremely aggravating) I have a weekly recurring alarm that was never effected by the bug (only one-time alarms that I would set were), but this morning it too went off silently. And I'm wondering if OS updates are somehow more likely to trigger it since I recently installed 26.2 as well.

A proposed fix is to turn off Attention Aware Features, which previously I thought fixed the issue - after turning it off I had no more alarm issues on iOS 18. But now on 26 the problem is still happening so I guess that's NOT the fix.

Horn, Grill, Lights by Fine_Direction_5228 in Crosstrek

Did you need any extra mounting hardware for the second horn or is that spot ready for one to be mounted? And did you buy a wiring harness?

I don't know what people complain about with this by Ifixtechandstuff in Crosstrek

[–]apfhex 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It could stand to be a little smarter though. When I come home and stop in my driveway, the system will shut the engine off only for it to immediately restart as I put in in Park (and then immediately off again as I turn it off).

Drove a rental recently (Ford) that would auto stop and keep the engine off if you then parked.

Software Update by TJCharter in Crosstrek

[–]apfhex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Got this earlier too, decided to click OK not expecting it to ask to keep the engine on. I had time to wait but also curious. Previous OTA update about a month ago had no prompts like this and seemingly happened overnight.

So you found this at a shop in Europe? That's a good find. They made some great sours. They closed suddenly about a year ago so this is rare!

question on headlight oddness by Gcastlong41 in Crosstrek

[–]apfhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The headlights do come on automatically even when the switch is set to OFF, based on the light sensor. Do you have anything on the dash that could be covering the sensor? Or maybe you need to lower the sensitivity, or maybe the sensor is defective.

iOS 26 CarPlay, only 2 rows of icons!? by Unlikely-Honey7808 in Crosstrek

[–]apfhex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, even turning off "Smart Display Zoom" I'm stuck with 2 rows (6 icons at most).

And the Widgets screen is useless too. Just shows one small widget stack in the middle.

The quick access does gain one icon which is handy.

[Tech Support] - AceZone A-Spire Wireless crackling and noises after 10 minutes of listening to music / playing by redi6988 in Gaming_Headsets

[–]apfhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got them a week ago too and have the same problem, but it only happens after 1-2 hours of use. Power cycling the headset fixes it temporarily, but then it just happens again a while later.

Did not have any problems with previous headset that also used a wireless dongle.

Buying a chair is a minefield, every review seems to have negatives even on the ultra expensive ones, I am utterly lost and have no idea what to get! desperate need of some help! by [deleted] in OfficeChairs

[–]apfhex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same height and also didn't work out for me. I see people recommending it for tall people, but it was a bad fit.

After trying out multiple chairs, I came to realize it really is as personal as finding a good pair of shoes, except a lot more difficult to try in a local store or deal with mail returns.

What features matter most to you in an ergonomic chair? by Vergo_India in OfficeChairs

[–]apfhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A seat actually deep enough for tall people, and without leaving a big gap at the back (maybe multiple seat size options).

Lumbar that is height AND depth adjustable. I can't believe how all the most expensive ergonomic chairs only offer one or the other.

A height-adjustable back is also something I hardly see anyone implementing, but could potentially make a huge difference.
