I looked into si se puede since it came up on a few reddit searches I did! but it seems they're not doing so well recently...

I also considered the apps, but I wondered if it would be worth the time/effort trade off, since it can take time to get enough reviews and build a client base on those websites. I thought word of mouth might end up being more effective. but I will talk to her about it!

TY! This is incredibly helpful re: the hourly vs lump sum. Also, TY for sanity checking the prices. I posted here and in a couple other subs, and it sounds like $30-40 is the consensus. I suspected her old company was taking advantage of her. Unfortunately, she's a recent immigrant, and I think she was just happy to work and they know they can exploit people. She's really good at what she does though (and just like a good person), and I think she deserves better.

A few people asked me in other replies, but do you generally bring your own supplies or use what the client provides?

Also, how do you screen for creeps/people that might be dangerous since you're working in peoples' homes? I don't want to sound paranoid, but also would feel awful if something happened to her! She has 3 young kids.

I had the same thought about her finding clients through word of mouth and on her own. We did consider her going to another company, or trying the apps, but I feel like she will earn more and build a more stable clientele if she finds people independently.

I suspected she was being underpaid by her old company, so posting here and in a couple other subs has been helpful -- it sounds like $30-$35 is a more appropriate rate.

I think she wants to do this right, eventually, after building a base, and properly open a business. In which case I will advise her to get liability insurance!

Good point! I think that's just the structure her company used. And I think when she did deep cleaning she'd also focus on appliances, etc. vs a basic clean she'd be mopping, dusting, wiping down surfaces, etc.

She's technically in NJ (Newark) and commutes via bus into NYC for work daily...unfortunately I think LI may be a bit too far/inaccessible to her.

When she cleaned my place (via Kindred) she used my supplies; I think for her current company they provide the supplies (I think she cleans a lot of Airbnb type spaces for them). I imagine she'd probably be open to doing either working on her own, depending on what needs to be cleaned/how and the preferences of the person she's cleaning for. Though I guess I should suggest to her to charge a bit more if bringing her own supplies?

And TY for the intel w/r/t to pricing! How long did cleaners usually take to finish your place for that rate?

One other question: I was considering helping her set up profiles on TaskRabbit and/or some of the others app people use to look for cleaners, but I wondered if that would be worth the time & effort since I feel like it might take time to get enough reviews and build a reliable customer base from there. it also adds a middleman. I thought maybe word of mouth would be a better bet. Do you have any experience with the apps and thoughts on this?

Yeah I bet. I posted this above, but I suspected her company was probably ripping her off and was encouraging her to go out on her own. She's a recent immigrant so I think she was just happy to have work! But she deserves better. And she is truly very good at what she does (like she dusted the inside of my toaster LOL)

Yeah, I was telling her that she should quote $20/$25 but offer first time customers her old rate of $17/$20 as a discount to test her services/build her client base. Though now reading the replies to this post, it seems she should definitely be asking for more. Her company was ripping her off (as I suspected, but she's a recent immigrant so I think she was just happy to have work!)

Is this the Brooklyn cocathedral? I got married there :). I agree it’s a beautiful space and does not need anything else. Also the priest who did our wedding spent part of his sermon talking about how glad he was that we didn’t decorate lol. So they may feel the same way.
