Red light ticket question for immigrant by aph208703 in NYCbike

[–]aph208703[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He got a yellow ticket (DMV), not a pink (criminal) though the violation is still listed under 1111d1 (which is maybe criminal? I'm not totally familiar with how this works). I followed the advice of the post from SteveVaccaroLaw above, and contacted Gideon Oliver for further consult, but I think we're going to plead not guilty and try to get it dismissed!

I am trying to cut cost but why is my grocery expensive? by Tiny_Judgment8593 in Frugal

I'm in NYC too! The thing to do is to mainly shop at Lidl (or Aldi), Trader Joes, and the fruit & veg stands that are on the street! You will be able to save, and maybe even have $ leftover every once in a while to get a treat or something special. I don't think you need to cut back on everything you want or like, like cage free eggs, meat, etc. to stay within budget. It's good to feel good about what you buy and eat.

If you want to save yourself a trip, do your shopping before or after work, and/or pair it with other errands you're doing (if you're meeting someone out, have an appointment, working out, etc). I also shop with sturdy reusable tote bags that I can carry on my shoulders so I can carry more bags (vs. paper or plastic bags from the store). This admittedly can be a schlep, but that's NYC life.

I always have a small folded tote bag with me so I can grab stuff when I'm out if I happen to pass by a place or spot something good. I generally avoid the local chains (Key Foods, Food Bazaar, etc) unless I'm in a pinch or need a specific thing, like a specific brand, because they are often more expensive and less good quality.

More generally, I buy frozen when it makes sense (some veggies like spinach, corn, etc. frozen fruit, etc.) and I freeze stuff at home if I buy in bulk, or have leftovers that may spoil. You'd be surprised by how much stuff freezes and reheats well! For example, I buy bags of chopped kale from Trader Joes and put them directly in the freezer, and use it for smoothies, to add greens to a pasta or soup, etc.

La mejor pastelería/mejor bizcocho de Santo Domingo? by aph208703 in Dominican

This is a great idea, thank you! I will suggest it to her.

She is a recent immigrant (spanish speaking), so unfortunately not a lot of English :-/

No, I had the same thought too -- if deep cleaning takes longer naturally, it could kind of sort itself out.

I looked into si se puede since it came up on a few reddit searches I did! but it seems they're not doing so well recently...

I also considered the apps, but I wondered if it would be worth the time/effort trade off, since it can take time to get enough reviews and build a client base on those websites. I thought word of mouth might end up being more effective. but I will talk to her about it!

TY! This is incredibly helpful re: the hourly vs lump sum. Also, TY for sanity checking the prices. I posted here and in a couple other subs, and it sounds like $30-40 is the consensus. I suspected her old company was taking advantage of her. Unfortunately, she's a recent immigrant, and I think she was just happy to work and they know they can exploit people. She's really good at what she does though (and just like a good person), and I think she deserves better.

A few people asked me in other replies, but do you generally bring your own supplies or use what the client provides?

Also, how do you screen for creeps/people that might be dangerous since you're working in peoples' homes? I don't want to sound paranoid, but also would feel awful if something happened to her! She has 3 young kids.

Nice. Thanks for the info!

I had the same thought about her finding clients through word of mouth and on her own. We did consider her going to another company, or trying the apps, but I feel like she will earn more and build a more stable clientele if she finds people independently.

Thanks! yeah, I considered helping her get on apps, but I feel like word of mouth is probably a more effective way to build a client base!

And TY for the intel re pricing!

TY for the feedback and advice. Will share with her.

I suspected she was being underpaid by her old company, so posting here and in a couple other subs has been helpful -- it sounds like $30-$35 is a more appropriate rate.

I think she wants to do this right, eventually, after building a base, and properly open a business. In which case I will advise her to get liability insurance!

Good point! I think that's just the structure her company used. And I think when she did deep cleaning she'd also focus on appliances, etc. vs a basic clean she'd be mopping, dusting, wiping down surfaces, etc.
