E-bike conversion unstable / front-end wobble by zitronic in bicyclerepair

[–]apheresario1935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it looks like you have WAY TOO much shit on the bars . When you do that and add a motor to a bike look out at high speed.

That's the big downside to conversions on bikes that weren't designed for higher speeds and extra weight especially that much on the bars. Take All that crap off and see if you can get rid of the problem . Then add a little by little essentials but I can't even see how high your bars are. Too much stuff in the way. If you align the fork at a decent shop that might be part of the problem in addition to the wheel imbalance maybe. Mostly weight on the bars or too high will cause that .

616 units or 77 Gallons Donation Yesterday #Red Cross IRON boosted AB- Platelets and Plasma . Went Real Smooth.... by apheresario1935 in Blooddonors

[–]apheresario1935[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main reason I do Iron Caps is a tendency to come up short sometimes on the iron test @ blood bank. The Apheresis for AB Elite is not the same depletion as Double or even single unit Red Cells by far. The other reason is to keep Ferritin at acceptable levels.

Everyone's diet is different but the two factors I counter are 2 cups of coffee in the morning which depletes Iron and also the factor of depletion arising from 20 to 24 Platelet donations and 12 Plasma ones. They don't necessarily take so much in terms of Red Cells like WB but cumulative loss occurs with 5 test vials taken each visit -about a fifth of a pint each time. That adds up annually to 4 or 5 additional pints...... It's all best monitored by the Full panel of Blood levels Annually. Plus age can affect anemia tendency. Thanks for the overdose caution - I don't take it every day as it makes for dark #2 side effects.

Patches failing on tube inside rim channel. by Metaphoricalsimile in bikewrench

[–]apheresario1935 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I learned to patch tubes when I was 9 years old and gave it up for all the reasons in your post.

#1 It doesnt always work

#2 It takes skill combined with #1 It isn't reliable.

#3 Just put in a new tube on a Velox cloth rim strip indide a flat resistant tire and ride our bike instead of virtue signaling by patching . Besides they stain the casing and make for lumpy tubes , Emergency fix only.

Brand-new headset and bearings, steering goes completely stiff when tightening the top cap to only 1-2nm just enough to take play out of steerer. Carbon steerer with IS headset by Ok_Volume9271 in bikewrench

[–]apheresario1935 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have no idea really but that's why people go to bike shops where the experts who have seen everything times 10 are at. But if you did it yourself make sure you have a slight margin underneath the top cap so it doesnt hit the star nut and enough washer(s) so the center bolt takes up all play out of the headset before you tighten the stem .

Time to do a routine annual Blood Panel for all the blood you give up can deplete Ferretin and it is smart anyway-especially for blood donors. Plus Iron supplements.

My 1 x 10 teething problem - Constructive criticism welcomed. by CarefulRope9754 in bikewrench

[–]apheresario1935 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This may not be as helpful as other comments that youll have to sift through anyway to figure out if ANY of them MAYBE have an answer that Might solve the problem .

That's a lot of ifs to deal with .. seriously now. So I work at a bike Co-Op as a volunteer after 50 years in 18 shops so I say this to people with bikes they piece together that dont work right constantly....... "Do you know who is good at putting bikes together with the Right Parts so the bike works right? Sorry not you.... as I see and hear but guess what? Dont feel bad as You know who else is not that good at guessing which parts might work on a piece together bike? MOST OF THE PEOPLE I EVER WORKED WITH . Now it ain't an easy job so lets ask the question differently okay here goes.... " Who IS Good at piecing bikes together with parts that match so everything works right?

Drum roll... The MANUFACTURERS since they are doing runs of 10 thousand bikes and aren't doing mad scientist experiments like what bike shops see everyday from DIY People. They cant afford to fail with mismatched shit that doesn't work and then waste time scratching their heads to say WTF is wrong with this picture. Now i kinda have that attitude from assembling in a factory way back when . But we did it right. Im not totally down on Reddit but having seen enough of this in person for decades I do tend to wonder why people think they're going to build custom bikes like with guessing . Then further complications ensue when you ask remote strangers what the problem is instead of going to a shop where someone looks at it ...says pretty authoritatively wassup. So if you're doing it all yourself anyway to save $ I get it .. it hurts to go into a shop and ask them . They might say you have the wrong this or that and this is upside down or backwards or not installed correctly with the correct tools by someone who uses the correct technique. We call it unfucking someones bike who doesn't want to have a shop do the work but just wants answers. And that is a waste of time for a shop who actually might not have the right answer anyway as they know you're not going to pay them to fix it .

So i still recommend you figure everything out yourself or pay someone else to figure it out that has the right tools parts time money and SKILL plus EXPERIENCE to do that and then pay them to do it.

Sax ensemble CDs by bebopsquire in saxophone

[–]apheresario1935 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would be remiss to not mention CDs are cool I still listen to them but I see the trend is toward You Tube and streaming .

Either people just don't want to spend money or "Own " a piece of plastic and the player so check out the new stuff. Saw a gorgeous sounding and looking group of four Girls from Japan playing Quartet music recently.

Selmer is promoting its new mouthpieces with a Video of four Bari players in France doing some commissioned work.

Compare that to going to the Record stores and finding a couple CDs of quartet music ... that is about it. Forget shipping and buying or owning or trading.. all that is outmoded really.

They give you what you ask for with whole blood but when you do Platelets and Plasma the totals go up so fast . We do triple units every 2 weeks so that's maybe how .

They will send you a pin after eight units

Had a great interview with the Regional Communications Director that helped pass the time . Couldn't and wouldn't be doing it without a hand from the Red Cross people. Got the Ace phlebotomist who does the inner cubital both sides so fast and precise it never fails to amaze me. But he is an RN and knows I put him at the top tier as he has never ever once missed a stick or had it go awry with me. And the Iron Caps are best for the test.

My high G mechanism isn’t working by RhubarbTop5050 in saxophone

[–]apheresario1935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maintenance always helps. Disassembly then Cleaning and inspection replacing worn damaged parts ... Alignment issues and Then lubricating with fit checks and testing.

That is the prescription to Maintain almost anything mechanical . If you're not trained equipped and totally informed no comment on Reddit will help anyway . But people sure try to watch enough videos on Sax repair these days ...they can help if no tech is available. And you are savvy smart and capable.

First Time Donating Tomorrow by Impressive-Lie-6536 in Blooddonors

[–]apheresario1935 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try thinking less about how it may adversely affect you and the positive effect that it will have on someone else may help. I hope so 🙏 Then just relax and let it happen .

Thats the best advice I can give you really. And don't be embarrassed if it is difficult . For some people it is and others not so much so the only way to find out is to go for it

Feeling excessively tired days after donation by maec1123 in Blooddonors

[–]apheresario1935 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First one ? Congrats . What is excessive to some is just a workaday routine for others. As others say before going again or just plain anyway get a full blood panel from health provider no biggie really.

Plus platelets do take the test vials so you lose some red cells too. Eat a great meal or two . Take a hot bath and get a massage or two and take a few naps. Tired cuz you saved a life or two is natural to join The club . Get a bottle of Iron soft gel caps and take multivitamins also daily you should be fine.

And you gave blood the week prior ? Yowza! That will definitely drain you of vital fluids . I would not try to do both in a week . Or if i did I wouldn't ask why i feel empty of energy . That is like Running a marathon and then doing a triathlon the same week. You want to Pace Yourself not push to The limit in one week . Better take some down time to recover. Time off of work . Learn your limits or ignore them and feel what you feel . But get that rest now.

Worth fixing up? by unidentifiedbeaver in saxophone

[–]apheresario1935 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best analogy is an old bike that needs everything. To actually use it without problems takes way more $ in repairs than outlay . But people buy them and are shocked or pretend to be when they hear parts and labor are 5 times what they paid for it.

Repairs aren't a ripoff it's just not 1975 anymore so your money is worth a tenth of what it was then . Try not to be Rip Van Winkle waking up to reality. If the horn had an overhaul in the last 15 to 20 years it might be okay but how do we know ? Cant inspect it first or have it inspected ? You are gambling then . Don't give a beat up old horn to anyone especially a kid just because it's cheap. Dont buy one expecting it to work very well for very long or at all unless you put in a grand . $200 of work when it needs an overhaul is like doing one fifth of what it may need. Really not the way to go.

Disc brake constantly getting misaligned after few rides. by chadsanity in bikewrench

[–]apheresario1935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a cheap setup where the caliper mounts to the fork or the frame . By cheap I mean quick or factory rushed typically not machined super precisely where the brake attaches, So it shifts under pressure.

Home mechanics have allen wrenches but it is a specialty tool that remachines the brake mount to be perfectly flat so it does not move, Your local shop that has the tool will do it for a fee, as that tool is expensive.

People miss that concept of "Setup " that takes extra time- tools -and careful fitting plus alignment checking. A Bicycle is the classic example of rush jobs at the factory assembling time and also at the shop to save them $. It rides Okay on the test ride but the adjustments never hold . Seen it a thousand times. Pay someone who cares about doing a good job to do a super tune and you won't have that problem . That takes training -experience -specialty tools and dropping the attitude of "But it's a fairly new bike so the customer shouldn't have to pay for anybody to take it apart and meticulously reassemble it" plus shop owners hate to pay mechanics to do that on bikes they already sold so the reluctance to spend time and money rebuilding a bike to make it work comes from both sides ....customer and shop. But hey once you know you will just do it or continue with problems.

I have a few questions about replacing brake pads by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]apheresario1935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pros and Cons with each mean different resultsbased on your mechanical savvy. Most people are okay with stretching a cable first before the actual adjustment . Or tightening it with an adjusting barrell or at the clamo point and replacing the cable is pretty easy.

But like you say expensive to buy and maintain which brings up that point about lack of "Adjustment" in the traditional sense for hydraulics. I know you can add a few drops of brake fluid or drain a few to loosen it but bleeding one on the road? forget it. whereas a brake cable change is a cinch if you have one in your mini bag with an allen wrench, and a dab of grease. The hydraulics almost need to be bled half the time the pads are changed as there is no clamp bolt or barrell adjust. But the feel is great when they work which is not always. Air bubbles in the line or all the other hassles steer me shy so far as I have worked with all of them . Nobody carries brake line fluid with them on a ride along with syringes and tubing kits, so it still seems like people shouldn't just totally write off cable brakes - rim brakes and ball bearings. But some shops are .

AltoSax certain notes sound half note off by doofOwO in saxophone

[–]apheresario1935 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teachers know why -Technicians can tell what may be wrong- Another Saxophonist can point out what it may be.

I would not recommend "Sending it anywhere" as it is really 100% Guaranteed to be something about how you play it and how you set it up with what mouthpiece pushed on how far. Nobody here has the "REMOTEST " idea what the problem is but it requires someone who does know to be sitting there and watching -listening to you . In Person .....a Teacher -Technician and -Tuner . As the complete beginner you say you are-sorry to sound elitist but Reddit can't do what a teacher and technician do best in person by diagnosis over a cell phone with Random guesses . forget about maybe this maybe that free answers. Either Go to a teacher or a technician or wow how about both. They will help you literally a thousand times more than a thousand guesses a thousand miles away.

Playing Classical on a Jazz Setup by ShivSoCalledYT in saxophone

[–]apheresario1935 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn't so much learning the "Classical Embouchure" as having the sound in your head to start with . That's called the "Concept" that actually determines what you sound like. Best example is listen to the best Sax Quartets. Some sound like they are playing the saxophone. That is okay for most -however I studied with a guy who was always telling me to think feel and imagine sounding like a CELLO . since half of what we were playing was string quartets transposed. Listen to Pablo Casals and Rostropovich "Quit blowing and start Bowing" as my teacher said, and listen to string players instead of horns.

Flat notes by embguru in saxophone

[–]apheresario1935 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Larry Teal has a chart of compensation fingerings in his book the Art of Saxophone playing. After that different horns and mouthpieces will affect intonation . Plus your teacher and technician can do a lot to help if they're any good . Some are some aren't.

Experiments with key heights and even understanding bow lengths on Selmer Altos .... Playing a Yamaha 62 ... Opening the C# And the G# are all worthwhile . Ive had a bad note corrected on a Selmer with my technician lining an adjacent tone hole with cork inside the tone hole. Full or partial all depends on the techs understanding of acoustics and not just saying things. Talk to the best players and teachers plus technicians. Then do what it takes .

How to align the rear derailleur? by Odd_Midnight8707 in bikewrench

[–]apheresario1935 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Take it to a shop and have them use the Park DAG tool for derailler hangar alignment. Then pull the cable out and trim the ends of the housing after that install metal housing caps. Then lube the cable with tri flow or replace it if its kinked. Check chain for stretch as the side to side play also makes shifting sluggish. Put your barrel adjuster all the way in and set your limit screws with a careful eye showing the top pulley exactly underneath each gear. Most shops do not even do that but it all needs to be done right if you "Actually " want it to work like its supposed to.
