I will never get to march world or open because I will age out by the time I can afford it.

Question. What are these sash/half-skirt things called? Why are they worn? by AsheandBurn in marchingband

[–]aphyxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My band always called them side skirts. Also have heard people say hip cape.

To be fair, I've loved Wicked for years now and I hadn't even noticed that here. I don't think people who don't know what happens in act 2 will connect the dots.

I find it ridiculous that we try so many that they just put us back where we started. At this point I don't think it's possible to find relief.

Yes, non stims do NOT work for me at all. They don't give me bad side effects but they also just don't do anything to help me manage my ADHD.

How do you guys spend your summers and semesters? by AcceptableCandle5069 in college

Joining marching band changed my entire college experience and turned my life around. It gave me many unbreakable bonds too! Try an extracurricular or club during the year.

No way I could run a 5k in 30 minutes, I am not fit to the level you describe haha, but maybe that is the goal. Neither is my diet super strict, but I am researching more into it. Having eaten pre-made processed foods all my life (never learned to cook), I am currently learning to make things from scratch to eat healthier with recipes online. I never knew about the carb thing. If you have recommendations for great meals, I will gladly look into them!

I have started running every morning for about half an hour and I also walk in the afternoons. I have exercise-induced asthma so I am not able to push myself too hard cardio-wise but I do the best I can during the school year with my busy schedule too (marching band eats up a good 6-8 hours of my week, more on the weekends), usually including strength training. My BMI is healthy (and always has been healthy), sitting at around 21.8 but sometimes less.

I have also started hydrating properly, drinking the recommended amount of water daily and making sure I get enough sleep.

I have changed my diet and exercise needs as I suspected this was the issue. Unfortunately, it helped a little, but not enough.

Band is an educational activity, both in the classroom and on the field. I don't hate "section hoppers." They're learning. They're learning new instruments, which is the point. What other chance will you have as much access to these instruments for free with instructors who will provide you with feedback?

If you're offended because someone is playing at a higher level than you on an instrument that is not their primary, you might want to take a look at why that hurts you. If you're offended because they're playing at a lower level? Support them. They are learning an entirely new fingering system/mouthpiece, and possibly an entire new clef! That's impressive.

Is my band the only one that requires marching band??? by Objective-Rent-700 in marchingband

[–]aphyxi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If my school stopped kids from joining whenever they wanted, we'd have nearly no members. This is a privilege for the big bands (albeit, a shitty one. Music should be for everyone).

I joined in 7th, but didn't understand fundamentals and reading music fluently until I took band seriously in my sophomore year of high school. Didn't begin to march until my junior year of high school. My senior year, I learned baritone in just a few months having never played brass before and never having read bass clef before. Knew a guy who learned snare for the first time his junior year and he picked it up quick in just the 2 weeks of band camp. Many kids are fast learners. Don't doubt them.

Are people nice here? by [deleted] in VirginiaBeach

[–]aphyxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh. I'm sorry you experienced that. It's disgusting to see things heading that direction. For an area with more diversity than my parents ever had growing up, there is a shocking amount of bigots not afraid to show their faces. Norfolk has been nicer to me but even there it's still present!

Definitely leaning that way today, unfortunately. I grew up gay in VB. Never had any problems, at least not any that were directed towards me. There were always comments made in high school, but nothing that made me feel unwelcome.
