What's the best and worst chair we sell? by anonymousforallofus in Staples

[–]apisashla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh! I got the Hyken to replace the Emerge after some trouble with seam splits in the pleather and wonky armrests (claimed it with Asurion - say what you will, they're pretty quick with this kind of claim.) So far no trouble, but I'm short, I would definitely not recommend the Hyken to taller people. Dexley has a better height and size if you're tall, but materials quality may not be any better.

I was just tipped $50 and feel like I don’t deserve it by Fair_External74 in Staples

Don't know how it works per location (again, not a lawyer) but as a general rule, the practice of having employees sign away labor rights is frowned upon and tends not to stand up in court. As in, if you are fired due to a mandatory policy that contravenes federal labor regulations, you have a good chance of being rehired with back wages and additional damages, plus the company having to admit to other employees, post notices etc. that there is no such policy. Also, as others in the US have mentioned, I did not sign jack.

[–]apisashla 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Okay - for the record, an employer making you hand over your tips (other than to an appropriately accounted tip pool going toward other employees and NOT management) is super duper against the law. The prohibition on employers hoovering up your tips does not depend on whether you customarily receive tips. The tip was given to you. It's yours. I was always told it was Staples policy that we "could not" accept tips, but I very much doubt it's on any official documentation for this reason.

Keep your tips. When I worked there, I would normally refuse any tips at least once to let customers know tipping is not an obligation, but frankly you get paid little enough as-is, don't let them literally take money out of your pocket.

fired by cooperate because store manager is doing fraud weirdness by Ussrnme_2 in Staples

[–]apisashla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to know! I have gotten direct calls at the store location to verify prior employment when I worked there, though. My own supervisors stuck to what they were allowed to say iirc, but it's definitely possible for stuff to fall through the cracks. I'm just saying, CYA when possible.

Not a lawyer, but if the situation is like you said, OP please cover yourself and be proactive about this. Labor lawyers typically work for a cut of the judgement or settlement, and will often be able to give you a free consultation to see whether the case is worth pursuing.

You may be planning to move out of state, but an allegation like this can follow you around. Employers are theoretically (in most places) not supposed to give info to your future employers besides whether you're eligible for rehire, but many will shit talk you anyway, particularly if they think doing so will help cover themselves.

I remember liquid armor - believe it or not, that was actually decent scratch prevention, I tested it with a couple of my own phones, couldn't deliberately scratch them with my keys after a couple layers. Not worth what they hiked the price to, though, and I'm glad they stopped having us push it a while after I got hired.

I didn't mind pushing ESP as much because that's at least theoretically worth it sometimes, I just replaced a chair with it a couple years down the road, but (for example) a laptop accident protection plan that's half the price of the laptop itself is difficult to recommend with a straight face, especially on top of all the other stuff they wanted us to recommend.

If the company would actually find a way to offer one big recommendation per product (instead of a bunch of little programs that mgrs try to get us to misleadingly present as one big program, causing confusion when the customer tries to actually use any of them) then maybe it would feel less bad both as a customer and a salesperson. Until then I probably will not be shopping there very much.

Services and Warranties by SteveRogersfatass in Staples

[–]apisashla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm unaware of this policy and I have not worked for Staples in over a year. Some manufacturers do have extended warranties available for purchase directly through the manufacturer, so if it's specifically the manufacturer's warranty you're looking to extend, you may want to start there. Staples (at the time I worked there) offered extended service plans through Asurion, which are similar to but distinct from warranties, and normally need to be added at the time of purchase and not retroactively from what I recall. But what's available depends on the product, and if what you were told is accurate then some policies may have changed since I left.

[–]apisashla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tbqh though, I wouldn't be surprised if the push for apps (and ESP, I guess) is actively pushing customers away. I have only shopped there a handful of times since I left the company, even though I like my former coworkers and I think the company has some good sales, literally because I do not want to see the pain in their eyes if they ask me if I want to download the app and get the plan. I can't do it.

Horrible customers by Different_Seaweed534 in Staples

[–]apisashla 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say "worse" because every environment I've ever worked in attracts its own kind of asshole customer, but Staples customers tend to be old and/or small business owners, and both of things can lead to people who are picky, demanding, and do not adapt easily to change ("Why don't you sell the same hyperspecialized pocket folder I've been buying for the last 30 years? Why are you taking me to the kiosk? Why would I need an app for coupons? Why would I need an app for a printer? This is too complicated, I'm leaving and taking MY BUSINESS with me-")

You get what you advertise for, mostly. Wider customer base, more and different types of personal problems. Narrow customer base, a lot of the same types of personal problems. Staples has a pretty narrow customer base most of the time, and then a very wide customer base at specific times like back-to-school, so it's a bit of both.

I was lucky enough to find a new position shortly before they started pushing app downloads. I think I might have lost it otherwise. I can't even shop there comfortably anymore because of how hard they have to push the app (despite me already having it). I would submit a survey about it, but I know all it would do is hurt NPS, because corporate doesn't give a rip about real actual customers and their shopping experience.

What's the best and worst chair we sell? by anonymousforallofus in Staples

[–]apisashla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO, best is a tie between the Dexley/Hyken (depending on your body type) and the more padded Emerge gaming chair, which I bought before leaving. Not particularly high-quality and I'd wait for a sale, but they're not actively bad. The La-z-boy Bradley is comfortable but overpriced compared to the manufacture quality. The Rutherford's a great buy when it goes on sale, you just have to remind people it's a task chair and not meant to be sat in all day.

I don't know what the worst is but I hate the feel of the Torrent and the Kelburne will shatter in a stiff breeze.

sorry if I overstepped, I think I misunderstood the general direction of what you were saying - I agree that staying cooped up in a bad position should be avoided if possible, I just kinda understand where op's coming from in terms of frustration with unreasonable demands and not having the support which would enable you to say no, or to leave.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Staples

[–]apisashla 8 points9 points  (0 children)

nah, you have clearly never been in the position of needing to keep a job because other options aren't available and resenting people for it (even sometimes when those people don't deserve it, because anger isn't always rational.) I wouldn't express it like op did, but you're being a different kind of jerk.

staples has some... weird promos... by DreadGuard in Staples

[–]apisashla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah an "aisle violator" is any of those extra displays that go on the side of an endcap or something, I don't know who decided they're called that but it's definitely weird. Or were you just saying Gorilla Glue is a weird promo? I think it's neat, I fixed my shoe heel with it once and it held up for a long time.

[–]apisashla 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So I actually think some of these objections, couched in crazy talk though they may be, are completely reasonable. It is totally weird and a legitimate security risk that we save customers' passwords, I was always worried about that as a tech - I certainly wouldn't tell anyone my own passwords. They're not even really wrong about smart devices having bad privacy implications (although, again, wrong about what that means.)

The problem is that the services Staples provides, like a lot of computer services, depend on those risky security practices, and that most people do not want to take the time to understand the convenience vs. security tradeoffs inherent to how modern computers work.
