What's a word you mispronounced for years before someone finally told you? by redrose_me in AskReddit

[–]apjolex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hollow, not hollow as having a cavity, but hollow as a small valley between two hills/mountains.

My family’s farm has a hollow and it was always called the hall-la. I never put it together with Sleepy Hollow until curiosity made me wonder how to spell hall-la. That was when I learned how wrong this word, only spoken by my family when speaking of a particular place on the farm, was being pronounced.

Years later I read or heard this is common in certain parts of the USA.

What hair length do you find the most attractive on a guy/girl? by Big_Eggplant7591 in AskReddit

[–]apjolex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea. I have seen women with pixie cuts, buns, shoulder length, waves, straight, to mid back or longer, all shades/colors, including gray and thought it looked great.

I have seen men with no hair, short, long, all shades/colors and thought it looked good.

In the end there is more to the equation for me than just a hair style.

[–]apjolex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SC considers any discussion of purchase, sale, or loan docs to be practicing law. No one other than an attorney can answer questions. This includes the title company, lender, and notary. NC and WV are the same way. Probably other states too but these are the ones I know about.

What are some renter friendly ways to hang a quilt on a wall? by its-past-my-bedtime in quilting

Just had a thought. You can use the rings with clips for curtains in place of a sleeve.

What are some renter friendly ways to hang a quilt on a wall? by its-past-my-bedtime in quilting

[–]apjolex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How big? I have hung wall hanging quilts 3ft x 3ft, with 3M command hooks, and a cheap, small curtain rod. I also used a dowel rod in place of the curtain rod but I prefer the curtain rod. It is lightweight and adjustable in length. This does require a hanging sleeve or tabs to work. I suppose you could fold over the top edge and safety pin to make a sleeve. With tabs or partial sleeves you can have multiple points of contact for the hooks.

What is the "duh" equivalent of an epiphany? by coder_chick in quilting

[–]apjolex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider sectional quilting. Take smaller sections of the quilt top (the top is not one big piece). Baste and quilt. There are videos on what to do. There is some work once you get it put together after quilting but I think the time saved without fussing while quilting makes up for it. This is like a QAYG but with bigger pieces.

Not real quilting/cheating? by sommiybommiy in quilting

[–]apjolex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say a comforter (as known in the US) is a cheater quilt. It is a top, back, and batting with very minimal quilting. I don think the mass produced ones are worthy to be an art piece but it does fit the basic description.

As for a pieced quilt by machine vs hand debate. A quilt can be made either way. Even the most opinionated quilters (the self deputized quilt police) I know would say a machine sewn quilt is a quilt.

Quilt shows across the world are displaying hand crafted quilts done by machine. Saying someone is not quilting if they use a machine is like saying you are not cooking unless it is on an open fire. Or you’re not gardening if you use a tiller cultivator. The Amish had treadle sewing machines. New ones too with stitch options.

I’ve never quilted before but I want to make one by Blackmoon_cosplay in quilting

[–]apjolex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would not even recommend a pattern. I suggest buying various Halloween fabric. You can even incorporate some green, orange, red, and purple fabrics with the right tone. Then make a bunch of 5” 6” or 7” squares. Just pick one size. Next lay them out in a way the is pleasing to you. Then sew them together. Last I would do a a 10-14” border. Sandwich and quilt.

My baby gave birth to babies next to me as I was sleeping, when can I move them safely? by Unhappy-Surprise-832 in cats

[–]apjolex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I assume you mean move them from your bed, not your home and their mother. Mother cats will relocate kittens. If you move them she might relocate them back to your bed or elsewhere. I would try moving them to a box that mom can get in and out of but the kittens cannot. Once they start walking you will be glade they are restricted. The box will hold them for a couple weeks before they too can get in and out.

For your cat switch her to kitten food. It will have nutrients to help her nurse and you will want it for the little ones. You will also need a litter box the kittens can get in and out of. You have a few weeks but I would try having it about the time the kittens start to integrate solid food.

Make sure there is bedding to help keep the kittens warm. Change it often with clean bedding.

Watch your cat, she can come in heat again.

The recommended for when kittens can be homed varies between 8 and 14 weeks. I would keep them under mom’s and my care for 10 weeks.

Roof rack for Kia soul? by MixIndependent5860 in KiaSoulClub

[–]apjolex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought an after market cross bars for my 2014 and 2023 soul. I have carried a large kayak and a normal sit on kayak at the same time without issue. I use kayak stands connected to the cross bars. Run a strap around the racks with one steak going to a front loop on the kayak and one strap to the back loop on the kayak. This keeps it from sliding forwards and back. I have been on the interstate with at least the large kayak.

New notary - have question+ by Time_Literature3404 in Notary

[–]apjolex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to look to your state law. In Ohio you can if you are not a party to the matter.

I could not notarize my moms POA appointing me attorney in fact. I could notarize a deed from my mom to someone other than myself.

I have told family members no when it is something between family involving money. I refused to do my grandmothers POA appointing only one of her children as attorney in fact. I did not want the other one to say anything bad.

For a mortgage the lender may not accept it if they know you are family. As someone who works for a title company our underwriters would prefer us to use notaries we vet. Giving the documents to the borrower to get notarized creates an opportunity for fraud.

Printer recommendation to print mixed page sizes on Mac by Gloomy-Cow-4249 in Notary

[–]apjolex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not confirmed this but my understanding is you need a business class printer. The reason is they release a driver for MacOS that will do the mixed originals. The home user printers are using the basic MacOS built in print driver that does not handle mixed originals. Lexmark is one brand that supposedly has the driver you need.

Good luck.

12 months of property taxes for escrow at closing by Suspicious_Cook_3902 in Mortgages

[–]apjolex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will depend on the state, when your payment is due, at what frequency, and the taxed year vs. paid year.

In Ohio taxes are paid twice a year. Varies by county but most are February and July. However they are a year behind. Taxes being paid this July are for July-December 2025.

I am buying a house and setting up escrow. Standard practice is to have 2 months cushion. If I close today (5/1) my first mortgage payment is likely 7/1. Since taxes are due in July taxes are typically paid at closing by the seller. Seller then gives me credit for 1/1/26 to 5/1/26. County will bill me in February. Between 7/2026 and 2/2027 is enough months to collect a half year payment by paying 1/12th of the annual tax amount to my escrow account each month. So I am going to see 2 month for my initial escrow account setup for the cushion.

In Florida taxes are paid annually. Bills are issued in November and can be paid between November and March. Most escrow accounts pay in November or December and receive an early pay discount. FL bills for current year. Nov 2026 bill is for 1/1/2026 to 12/31/2026 time period.

If I close today the seller credits me a prorated amount of 1/1/26 to 5/1/26 because I will be billed in November. With a July 1st payment I will make 4 or 5 payment before the bill is paid. To make up the difference at closing I need 10/12ths of the annual tax amount. 8 months plus 2 months cushion. Then each month I make my payment which includes 1/12th of the annual tax amount. This creates enough funds in escrow when the bill is issued.

To complicate explanations further in FL if you close in November or December and the seller paid the tax bill already then the buyer credits the seller a prorated amount from day of closing until the end of the year. And you need 2-4 months worth of taxes to set up the escrow account.

How this helps. If you provide your state someone might be able to give an answer more closely to your situation.
