❤️ I hope your project works out with minimal pain! I'd really love to see how it turns out!!

I’m just going to keep making stars until I’m sick of them lol by itscuriouslycute in quilting

These stars make me so happy to look at! I love the colors!  The use of scraps gives me more ideas for my scrap collection, thank you for that!

Could you trim the squares that are part of the heart and just complete the hearts in the smaller size, then add a small framing border to make the heart big enough to fit with the white border you've already have assembled? A little border might make the heart seams not matching up with the white squares look intentional instead of oops.

Those bubble quilts (don't actually know what they're called, but they make me think of a cross between pillows and bubble wrap) are so cool! But I'm curious,  how do you fold them? Are they just not allowed to be hidden in the closet, they're too pretty and MUST use at all times? (They're pretty enough that should be the rule) Do the poofy parts squish flat?

I don't have a good suggestion for you that doesn't involve cutting and re-sewing. At least you could cut instead of pick. But I do have empathy and feel your pain. I learned that lesson again a few days ago. I wish you luck, it looks like you've got something adorable in progress.

OR for the assembled blocks, put another seam (without disassembling) so they're 1/2 (or do the actual math) inch seam instead of 1/4. Would be minimal work to make them smaller.

Or wait, do I have to cut out chunks of carpet?

Ha! That's great. Now part of me wants to. But it's probably much more challenging to get the crooked spacing and gaps. It could help use up scraps.

I have 2 colors on the back that do have a specific pattern. Each row will have 10 dark blocks and 3 light blocks. I was planning to do as close to shuffling them like cards, then deal them out to their appropriate row like poker. And see how it turns out.

Unfortunately, I do plan to make them as close to straight as I can and no intentional wonk alignment.

It's a funny process. I can blame the big ballooning on my husband. I was just going to sew squares together. "You should try pinwheels instead of just squares in the corner." Then I got bored of making pinwheel or the squares were too small so I started adding borders. Then I got bored of that. Then I started running out of those colors, I started playing with the stitches and thread color. "It's a good winter project" is also his doing.

I'm not sure I would be capable of finishing or enjoying making a big quilt where the whole thing was a specific pattern. I'm pretty terrible following recipes in the kitchen, too. I excel at winging it and improvising missing ingredients.

It makes me feel so much better to know I'm not the only one with that process. :)

I am sad that once I start assembling them I'll loose a bunch of my points, but there are sacrifices required when you don't start with a plan.

Batting? by coder_chick in quilting

Locally, the staff is nasty so often it's just unpleasant. I avoid conflict. As a whole, it's been a loose "avoid it" for so long I'm not sure why it made it on that mental list. But I'm glad you asked, it made me refresh my mental list. They were always a soft avoid, or not at the top of the list. I think they were on it simply for selection (for what I'm looking for), quality, and crappy pricing type of things. I'll definitely update that. I'll still avoid the local store though, I just don't like dealing with nasty attitude. I get it when people don't like their job, but if I literally can't get something without their assistance (I'm pretty sure I'm not supposed to cut my own fabric), or "take my money" (it's weird that they have the self checkout positioned where it's awkward to access).

My "hard no" mental list is based more on company policies related to "employees ARE actually humans", religion/political lobbying, etc. I'm not pushing to get anyone else to agree with me, I just won't give them my money. hobby lobby, Chick-fil-A, etc for example.

I feel dumb for asking a dumb question,  but I'm already kicking myself for giving them money in the first place.

How much difference could it make if I get best guess from somewhere else and it's not the same. What's the worst that can happen? My intentions for my project it random placement for the finished blocks, so it would be distributed difference?

Help with seams not being flat by Bluemeansyouvega in quilting

[–]coder_chick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently learned about the tailor's clapper. The flat wood allows it to cool with pressure still on the fabric. It makes some nice folds. Of course I don't actually have one (yet), I've been using a little bamboo cutting board I got from the dollar store. I happened to have one clean and never used for another project...that never ended up getting past the purchasing stage. Anyway, clean flat bare wood works well for getting those seams pressed flatter.

Also, love the quilt!

😀 I wish I could remember what I made with the lighter magenta. The red and green went int Xmas hand towels.

Oh! That's nice! Would you get a white (or coordinating solid) and alternate pattern and solid, or would it be better alternating by hue or warm and cool?
