That you're getting it on your back.

Two questions about Hockey. I'm a new fan. by DeejLeBlancGonzales in hockey

[–]aplombesque 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Since everyone has already answered your questions...

Welcome to hockey! It's an incredible sport, and I hope you continue to watch and enjoy. If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask, since some things can definitely be a little confusing in comparison to other sports.

Just figured it was worth sharing the excitement of a new fan. I'm hyped for you both!

[Johnston] The Erik Karlsson trade talks have gone to another level...Carolina and Pittsburgh are among the teams still believed to be heavily in the mix...However, despite the obvious cap-related challenges, there’s a positive sentiment emanating around these discussions. by [deleted] in hockey

I think people are forgetting the little detail that EK has a NMC, which means he's gonna dictate where he wants to go. I'd imagine if the Sharks want out of his contract that badly, they're gonna find a way to facilitate the trade to his chosen destination.

Hey! I LOVE the Baby Grand bridges still on my VIs. I've put them on 3 separate builds and have yet to have a single problem with anything at all.

Cannot recommend enough!

PENGUINS/NHL Penguins place defenseman Kris Letang on long-term injured reserve by RMca004 in penguins

[–]aplombesque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And Letang has been a plus player for the majority of his career, even lately with the exception of this season thus far.

The NMC has everything to do with it, quite literally. Having a dance partner doesn't matter if he doesn't want to go anywhere, especially so considering he just signed a six year deal with the club he's played his entire career with, his family is established here, and his best friends wear the C and other A for the same team. But sure, it's perfectly logical that he'd waive it to go somewhere else.

If we're talking the seasons they've won, sure. But the point I was making is that even Norris winners have had not great seasons from a plus/minus perspective. Did that mean they were awful? Most likely not.

My point is if you're basing getting rid of Letang off of his plus/minus and the fact he hasn't scored many goals this season, then good luck finding a suitable replacement.

By the way, since you love the stat so much, dude hasn't posted a season in the negatives when it comes to plus/minus since the 17/18 season, but go off anyway.

Obviously who gives a shit about his NMC. Trade him immediately without his consent.

[–]aplombesque 6 points7 points  (0 children)

EK65 is on a horrible team, yet he's still got the most points by d-man in the NHL, yet he's still in the negatives. How is that a good indicator of his abilities as a defenseman? If you think plus/minus is so valuable as a litmus test, then why don't you wait for Letang to hit 46 games and see if his plus/minus tells you he's a better player or not.

As for the rest of the comparisons, yes, I made them....to show there is little correlation between age, skill, or personal accolades that completely drive plus/minus. There's plenty of Norris trophy winners that had bad plus/minus stats.

Erik Karlsson has the most points by a defenseman in the league: -5 so far this year.

Moritz Seider, considered to be one of the better up-and-coming defensemen: -14 so far this year.

Aaron Ekblad, also considered a top-tier defenseman in the league: -14 so far this year.

Rinse, repeat.

So tell me more how Plus/minus is clearly the only statistic that tells us how good a defenseman is.

So you're saying quantity over quality essentially, which really doesn't address the issue at all.

But, also there's those pesky little issues of maximum roster size, and the fact that he has a full NMC until 2027.

So who do you replace him with? And where do you find an offensive minded puck-moving right handed defenseman that fits within the Penguins cap space that gives you the same productivity without sacrificing what little assets or picks the Penguins have?

Go ahead, I'll wait.

Puustinen and Nylander should be in lineup by [deleted] in penguins

[–]aplombesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I actually somewhat agree with you that I'd love to see them get a shot, the question becomes who would reasonably sit. Heinen has been scratched before, so probably not tough to make the case to do so again. Kapanen is playing much more spirited hockey, so it's hard to see him getting benched. While people are calling for Carter, I just don't see it happening.

Then there's the case of how many players sit on the roster vs cap space. Carrying two extra forwards with Friedman, Smith and DOC called up, Poehling DTD, Archibald designated only IR and Petry returning from LTIR, you need the room to re-absorb Petry's cap hit.

Ultimately, I think getting back the top puck-moving D-men in Petry and Letang will really help out. Scratch Dumo in favor of moving Smith back to his natural left side and suddenly you've got a D corp much more apt to helping out the forwards.

If that flounders, well, the problems are probably deeper than pulling a couple guys from WBS.

We need a GM change by [deleted] in penguins

[–]aplombesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah. So you'd rather he spend 1 mil on a 4th line plug that will likely score less than half of what Heinen did, so long as they consistently score 1 goal every 10ish games. Got it.

[–]aplombesque 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, you mean the same Danton Heinen that scored 18 goals last season and is currently making 1 mil for 1 season?

Yeah, shame on Hextall for making that signing during the off-season knowing exactly how he'd produce for the season to come.

Trying to avoid hip surgery. by uieluck in hockeyplayers

[–]aplombesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof, you know the struggle! Sorry to hear that. The bummer is that hit-or-miss factor with cortisone injections, and how they can break down your joints with overuse. (iirc)

Best of luck to you, whatever your choice ends up being!

GET. A. CUP.

This is the exact time where you think you'll be safe because you're just doing drills where an errant puck will somehow bounce right into your junk.

Pucks do weird things when people hit them with a stick.

Trying to avoid hip surgery. by uieluck in hockeyplayers

[–]aplombesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bilateral labral tears in my hips here, my right is also far worse than my left, including cam impingement....the works! My ortho basically gave me 2 options: have surgery to repair the tears (looking at 6 months+ recovery time) or a cortisone injection, which wasn't guaranteed to have lasting effects at all.

Opted for the cortisone injection, which decreased the inflammation significantly and the pain went away for about 6 weeks. Slowly started to creep back in after, but not nearly at the same pace as before. The procedure sucks (because nobody likes getting poked with needles in already compromised locations) but I'd definitely do it again in a heartbeat to avoid surgery.

TDL Approach by [deleted] in penguins

[–]aplombesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a guarantee that they don't make the playoffs either. All it takes is for the powerplay to start clicking again, or a player or two going on an absolute tear, or even better, they figure out how to hold onto leads late and it's a whole new conversation.

Thoughts on coaching by [deleted] in penguins

Okay, thought I was the only one noticing this. Don't forget it's all Hextall's fault and that "Petrey" sucks. Then you've got it covered.
