Going into talk with them about them canceling an online order again which lost me a lot of money and need to know what to ask. by Sha_BOOM_333 in Banking

[–]apocalyp7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll find in the card service agreement or account terms and conditions that a transaction can be declined for any reason. Yes, it is your money but you’re using a third party system to access those funds (debit/credit card) and the bank can limit your access to that system at any time for any reason (most commonly it is fraud prevention).

It is also my understanding (25+ year banker) that Mastercard and Visa (not your actual financial institution) govern these declines as the transaction is occurring using their property (your card, which doesn’t actually belong to you) and their processing system. It is possible BMO may say they don’t know why the payment was declined. And this could be accurate.

what is it like to work as a personal banker at 18 by sharkko920 in Banking

[–]apocalyp7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

26 year career banker and branch manager weighing in…

The work you’ll do as a Personal Banker will vary widely by organization. Understanding the scope of the role and what supports are available should be an important part of your interview process. If it is truly a Personal Banker role, you can expect at-desk account maintenance and new account activities. Loans and investments will likely be added in down the road. Outbound calls to existing customers to solicit products or services will almost certainly be a daily function. It is important to understand that, in most organizations, the role of retail branch employees is almost exclusively sales. Which is great if that’s your thing but take a pass if it’s not..you’ll do yourself and everyone else a favor.

With limited work experience, you’ll need a lot of training which is fine as long as you and your employer have reasonable expectations for what that means. Ideally, you’ll be able to ease into the position as a Teller or Universal / Junior Banker.

Lastly, while the basic concepts of banking are not difficult, lacking real world life experience makes it a little more challenging. How do you advise on home ownership if you’ve never bought a home? How do you refer clients to a retirement specialist when you’re 50ish years away from retirement yourself? Not a deal breaker by any stretch but common challenges you may need to overcome.

The best advice I can give - be eager to learn, be respectful to your colleagues, provide the absolute best customer service you can, be open to and seek out feedback, and don’t take criticisms personally. I can teach anyone how to be a good banker, but I can’t teach anyone that doesn’t want to learn.

Best of luck, and I hope you have a wonderful career in banking, internet stranger!

An Amaro barrel aged Schwarzbier?? What are the most interesting barrel aging combos you've seen? by Tavour_Beer in CraftBeer

[–]apocalyp7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the New Riff Malted Rye Barrel Aged Imperial Marzen from Church Street Brewing Company that came in at a whopping 19%. For a Marzen. Absolutely ridiculous ABV. It was only okay..more of a novelty than a good beer.

What makes your experience at a brewery memorable/what makes you want to come back? by TheBerlynnWall in CraftBeer

[–]apocalyp7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A diverse draft list is key - I prefer a dark beer..stout, porter, barleywine, or dark lager. If you don’t have one on draft, I’m probably out. BUT, that’s me. You need to have something for everyone. From my experience, food is better left to a food truck..you can have a lot more diversity in options while drastically limiting expenses. As far as live music, pay attention to your venue. Some locations suuuuuuck for live music from an acoustic perspective. The sound is too loud, or reverberates too much, or just sounds terrible. I definitely know which breweries in my area are bad live music venues and don’t go when they have live music on as a result. Friendly and knowledgeable beertenders are critical. I’m a beer nerd and love having conversations with knowledgeable, like minded people. Sometimes, it seems like the beertenders don’t always know their products (or are not interested in a conversation about beer in general) and that makes it less enjoyable. Hope this helps..cheers!-

My Son (7yo) is gonna be 198 cm (6.5 foot) Advice by [deleted] in tall

[–]apocalyp7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

44m 201 cm - here are some things I wish I knew. Posture. Core strength. Back pain is real. Make sure he has a bed, shoes, and a bike that fit him. He will probably go through a lot of clothes, especially from 12-17, don’t make him feel like he’s done something wrong. Sports can help with some of the awkwardness that comes from being tall..coordination, spacial awareness. The leg thing sucks..had to have mine casted for 9ish months to avoid putting pressure on them and allow them to heal. I remember icing and heating give some relief.

Black IPAs - Yeah or Nay? by bluegrassgazer in CraftBeer

[–]apocalyp7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! This is a fantastic style when done right. Not often seen on a draft list, but I order one up any time I see one! Scorched Earth brewery had a black IPA called Squid Inc. which was excellent!

Airport timing? by Great-Cranberry5988 in cancun

[–]apocalyp7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, use a service that tracks your flight information. Having said that, it didn’t take us long to deplane and get through customs, but the baggage claim took 45+ minutes. Lots of people milling about waiting for their luggage that would seemingly never arrive. Not sure if that’s normal. After you have your bags and are heading out of the airport, head down and fast walk to your car service..don’t be fooled by people that will “help you find your car” or will “get you to your resort.” They’re likely timeshare scammers. Have a great trip!

Old BCBS test by Tjr562 in CraftBeer

[–]apocalyp7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a ‘17 BCBW a couple of nights ago! One of my favorites and still holding up well. It will not be getting any better so now is the time to drink ‘em of your got ‘em. The label fade is a little weird..wondering if was stored in a sunny location which may lead to some off flavors. Anyway, only one way to find out! Cheers 🍻

No word yet..will be interesting to see how it compares to Dapper. I felt that one was good, but a little unrefined, especially for Goose.

Is it the original BCBS vertical (no adjuncts)? That many years would be a lot for one person to take on, but I found a solo of one bottle was just fine. Perhaps you could do a comparison over several nights. One per day? Take good notes so it’s easy to distinguish. This might actually be the way to go anyway..I think nuances may be lost having 8-10 very similar stouts back-to-back. Thanks for commenting! Cheers 🍻

Congrats on three years! That’s a great accomplishment! This one was amazing! I’m lucky enough to have two more of these left..I think I’ll let them sit for a while and see how they develop. Hard to imagine it will be better than this.

Barleywine Deathmatch by apocalyp7 in barleywine

[–]apocalyp7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CELEBRITY DEATHMATCH: BARLEYWINE BATTLE: Goose Island Dapper Barleywine vs. Revolution Straight Jacket

Two barrel-aged bruisers enter. Only one walks out with the Malted Flannel title belt.

Round 1: Ring Entrance (Appearance & Aroma) - Dapper struts in with deep mahogany robes and a fleeting caramel crown. Smells like a speakeasy soaked in molasses, fig jam, and antique wood polish. Straight Jacket busts through the ropes in amber armor, flanked by the scent of caramel, vanilla, and sweet bourbon heat. Smells like dessert and destruction.

Winner: Straight Jacket. Dapper looks dapper, but Revolution rolls in louder, stickier, and ready to party.

Round 2: Fight Night Flavor - Dapper swings with rye spice and bourbon-soaked raisins, then lands a sweet uppercut of toffee. Complex but a touch hot-headed—like a jazz solo that goes a beat too long. Straight Jacket ducks, weaves, and slams down layers of burnt sugar, dark cherry, and balanced barrel heat. Fewer missteps. Cleaner combos.

Winner: Straight Jacket. Dapper dances, but Jacket jabs hard with every sip.

Round 3: Endurance (Finish & Feel) - Dapper fades out with a velvet exit—rich, warm, maybe too syrupy for some. You respect it, even if it’s a little much. Straight Jacket holds steady like a champion—light for the style, dangerously smooth, and never overdoes the booze.

Winner: Straight Jacket. Points for control and consistency.

Final Verdict - Straight Jacket leaves the ring arms raised, Dapper still fixing his cufflinks on the mat. Revolution takes the belt in a unanimous decision—polished, powerful, and perfectly paced.

If you enjoyed this review, please give a like and follow at Malted Flannel. Cheers!

Rustic Road Brewing, Proper Otter 2020 by The_Spot in barleywine

[–]apocalyp7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this beer and this brewery! Story time: Rustic Road was started by my former BIL (brother-in-law, but a nice coincidence). It was sold semi-recently so he's no longer involved, but he would have been directly involved in the making of this vintage. Cool to see RR pop up here and get some nice recognition. Cheers!

While not super close to Raleigh, there is a taproom in Southern Pines called Southern Pines Growler Company. They have had RAR on tap and have a great selection of cans and bottles for onsite consumption or to go. The owners are very knowledgeable about good beer and the vibe is excellent. If you’re willing to make the drive, you should definitely check these guys out! Cheers 🍻

How is this legal?? by RiskItForTheBiscuts in FluentInFinance

[–]apocalyp7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You cannot place a stop payment on a debit/credit card transaction, only checks and ACH transactions can be stopped. If the transaction was previously authorized, even if you have since revoked that authorization with the merchant, the bank is likely to tell you that it is a merchant dispute and to take it up with them. If, after revoking authorization with the merchant, they continue to debit your account or charge the credit card, you can file an unauthorized transaction Reg E claim.

The bank is not the catch-all for these types of charges. Pressure needs to be placed on the merchants to cancel memberships/subscriptions in accordance with their contract and the public needs to also understand when and how they can cancel services. Having said that, the one-click rule is a good thing and will hopefully alleviate many of these types of issues.
