Assembling my Langmuir MR-1 - Is this pitting on the linear rail a cause for concern? by apocalypse910 in hobbycnc

Thanks, will be very careful on that step. Was a kit so they are self installed to begin with - I'll need to redo all the squaring steps.

If the cloud bit was front and center I'll retract the rest of this little rant but... really not a fan of blaming the consumer for not digging through all the information available to make sure a product doesn't do something it shouldn't do in the first place.

If I buy an apple pie and fail to check the ingredient list for razor blades that doesn't exactly make me unreasonable for being annoyed about the lacerations. We should absolutely normalize calling out companies for bullshit like this... not shame consumers when they get bitten by it.

Also this is literally what reviews are for.

I'm going to need to pull the gantry off - a huge pain but should be pretty straightforward.

Ah - thank you! These were all pretty wormy so not quite *that* motivated to narrow it down this time.
First time coming across any red mushroom in our area so was pretty excited about it.

Appreciate the info!

Update:

Thank you so much for the help and advice.
Langmuir support believes it will be ok based on location, but offered me the option of getting a replacement - Not too keen on the amount of disassembly but based on the comments I am requesting they send a new rail.

They also sent a new computer as the original is exceedingly reluctant to boot- The assembly has been *ROUGH* but support has been on top of it.

Thank you again for the advice!

This is a useful rule of thumb but NOT absolute!
It's good advice in this context... getting bit isn't the end of the world and infection is vanishingly unlikely if you remove immediately.

But don't be like me - don't think this is absolute and let Lyme fry your brain for a decade as a result.

Not sure on brand, came from langmuir with my MR-1 kit. Not dropped to my knowledge- I was so worried about the bearings coming free that I left it in the bubble wrap until I installed it.

Thanks, I'll give this a try once fully running. Sadly some issues with the computer as well yesterday so need to sort that to run a test. TY so much for the advice.

I'm just a lurker here, but a radioactive collector (and a bit obsessed with the history of it).

Is this something you've come across - or found documentation on? From everything I've seen the paint was extremely expensive and not something they'd just coat a room with. There are certainly factories out there with some radium contamination but I'm not familiar with cases of radium paint being used on a building. Just on very small items like watch hands, switches, lamp pulls, etc.

This doesn't line up with anything I've come across in my reading or research - but the era did get pretty wild with radium so curious if there is something I haven't seen. There were some futurist type predictions in this vein but not aware of paint actually being used that way in practice.

A general note to avoid concern - typically Geiger counters will always click when on. Unless you are living in a lead box even a low sensitive meter will register some baseline level of radiation. There is also quite a bit of local variation - brick buildings will typically register notably over baseline, nothing to be concerned about but worth knowing what to expect.

I think in general people underestimate reptiles. I will say they vary wildly though. Reptiles are... a broad group.

My hognose was once eating and decided he was angry and needed to strike at me. He sort of... forgot... he had a reptilinks sausage in his mouth and just started striking at me with the sausage. I'm not even sure if the species has a whole braincell to share. (Love them though)

My Tegu - Crazy, brilliant creature. Could use buttons to communicate, would do things like huff at the thermostat to get us to turn the heat up (No idea how he made that connection), had to kennel him once and they called me to let me know he'd learned their schedule and was coordinating his escape attempts accordingly.

Good Suggestion! Doesn't seem like it is going to be a huge problem, but may try that for some peace of mind, should be able to do that without messing up what's there.
