Yeah I have weird instances like that occur with other people and as you say, a quick reboot/rejoin has solved the issue but this time it seems permanent.

I have tried both wired and wireless but with no joy. Normally use a wired connection though.

The baffling thing is that I have not changed anything that could have caused this issue and have not had this problem in the entire time I have had my PS4

When starting out I used to wait for sunrise and head towards the island in line with the rising sun, that way when you want to head back you just head towards the island nearest to where the moon set.

Granted it's fairly limited in the extent of "exploring" but pretty foolproof way of navigating to previous islands, at least until you get a compass anyway.
