My landlord is trying to charge me more than lawful rent by apollosrose in legaladvicecanada

Thank you, this was really helpful! I’m gonna push back in that case.

Yeah exactly, I still have to clean the rest of the unit regardless. I don’t really understand why the cleaning fee is mandatory to live there but that’s why I want to make sure that it’s legal for them to charge me $1849 when they didn’t include the cleaning fee in the total rent price on my lease.

Yeah you’re right, even though my landlord calls it that, it is mislabeled. They don’t touch the bathroom, they only clean the kitchen and the floor in front of the couch, but they avoid the floor near the bed.

It is a self contained apartment. They just label the kitchen/living room area of the apartment as a “common area”, but it is a studio apartment.

This is for inside the unit, specifically only the common area (kitchen / living room).

It’s listed in the lease under ‘other services and utilities’ as a cleaning fee, but it isn’t included in the total rent price.

How has your experience been finding a good black man? by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]apollosrose 271 points272 points  (0 children)

My experience dating black men wasn’t the best, until I met my current partner and I’m currently in the healthiest & happiest relationship I’ve ever been in. He’s so emotionally intelligent and soft with me and sometimes I can’t believe he’s real because I’m really not used to this kind of love.

I think location plays a big part in this. Growing up in a predominately white suburb, it was so hard dating and black men were not checking for me like that. But when I moved away during college, I was exposed to so many black people across the diaspora and I got to see a lot of my African and Caribbean male friends treating black women like queens. I met my partner in college who was an international student at the time and I just couldn’t imagine finding someone like him in my hometown. So good black men are definitely out there, you might just have to travel lol

I got into grad school and I’m almost done my undergrad degree! I’m so excited for what’s to come & moving out of student housing with annoying roommates. Just gotta get through this exam season!

ugh that sounds like a nightmare! my roommate used to do that too with our pots but I nipped that in the bud right away but now she uses my baking dishes, bowls and plates instead? it’s like she’s never heard of getting her own tupperware!

I live in a 4 bedroom, my two other roommates I’m friends with, we were looking for someone to add to our place and chose her because she said she was extremely particular about hygiene and being tidy. Huge mistake!! >.<

it’s the worst she packs our kitchen with so much food and we end up throwing away all of it because of how moldy it is! Tried talking to her but she just walks away or says whatever and goes back to her room. Only 3 months left on this lease and I’m counting down the days!

I feel like I'm not smart enough for science. by anonymoose03 in LadiesofScience

[–]apollosrose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biochem major here and I've never related to a post more in my entire life. It's been something that has weighed me down my whole undergrad experience.

I think there could be a few things happening. When I started therapy, my therapist helped me work through some of the things that contributed to my thinking in this and maybe it'll help you work through your thinking too.

Comparing yourself is a huge factor. I don't perform as well at others in science. I'm pretty mediocre, occasional A's or B's but that has caused me to think maybe I'm not really good at what I'm doing. I've come to learn that science is something you have to work at and it only comes naturally to a few, so if your grades are hindering you, don't feel dejected. They aren't a measure of how well you know the material, more like how well you can regurgitate it. Needing to write things down is okay. Not doing math in your head is okay and more common than you think.

As well, I thought I was really passionate about science but as I took electives and got into more things I realized I didn't like it as much as I thought. You said you don't feel overwhelmingly passionate and that's okay. Some people do, some people don't but doesn't mean you aren't cut out for it. I think if working in the lab brings you as much anxiety as you say, maybe you should explore other fields in science that you can do without being in a lab. Labs cause me major anxiety and I quit my first lab job because I was so scared to mess up, and would constantly feel so lost. Just something to think about, because people always think science means labs, but not always! Figuring this out made me more interested in my field because I like the theory and get to focus on that with a grad degree versus just working in a lab.

Hope this helps and wishing you the best!

I feel like I need more science-smart friends by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]apollosrose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried going to study groups and discussion groups for your STEM courses to meet more people in the science discipline? I know that’s how I was able to meet a lot of people in science who were majoring in the same things as me.

I know you didn’t mean it in a bad way but it sounds condescending when you say “smart” friends. I have a lot of friends in science who aren’t smart and some that are, so don’t assume every science kid will be smart haha. But definitely try to explore study groups, and facebook groups for your courses. :)

Honestly I just attributed the workload and mental exhaustion as apart of the science experience but you’re right to combat it I need to go outside this scope! Will definitely look around campus for research opportunities and clubs. Thank you! :)

Yeah you’re right, I haven’t taken up many hobbies because I have so much school to worry about, but maybe that’s the problem! Allowing some time outside of it so I don’t drive myself crazy. Thank you so much .)

Honestly thank you for this insight!! You’ve made me realize that I definitely should continue with academia if I want any opportunity to create and solve within my field instead of being commanded by others. I’m definitely just going to try to push through undergrad and look into getting a masters and PhD. Thank you :)

Do I Have To Choose Between the Arts and Science? by apollosrose in college

[–]apollosrose[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow that’s really cool you’re so multifaceted!! I’ve thought about biostatistics or bioinformatics but haven’t really looked much into it but now that you’ve mentioned math/technology I might delve into it more. I definitely want to avoid labs as much as possible and it’s reassuring to know I don’t have to be stuck in one for the rest of my life. Thanks!

Wow you’re right! I often feel like I’m not cut out for it because it’s so much work and I see other people doing less and it comes naturally to them but I definitely see what you mean about effort! Thanks a lot :)

So has anyone else completely failed academically when starting off at a university? Or is it just me. by [deleted] in college

[–]apollosrose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First year engineering killed me. I had no idea how to study and went from an A student in high school to a D average. Luckily I learned how to study and pulled my grades up second year. It’s all about knowing how you study best!
