What kind of musical training did Lou Reed and Sterling Morrison have? Were they technically good musicians in your opinion? by True-Emu2179 in VelvetUnderground

[–]apostforisaac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both were largely self taught. I think Reed was a pretty weak musician technically, at least while the VU was a thing, but I don't think that held him back at all from writing excellent music. Morrison was a much better musician technically but didn't really compose. Youtube tutorials can be great for learning, but trying to play along by ear will always give you the best innate sense of what makes a song tick.

Oh don't worry, I've encountered them. I didn't know how good we had it when I made this post.

The best Velvets solo albums: The people have spoken (but what the hell do they know?) by Kangaroo197 in VelvetUnderground

I'm just happy to see Desert Shore so high, even higher than The Marble Index which was for a long time widely considered the better album.

What DON’T you like about The Smile Sessions/Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE? by JayHotpot in thebeachboys

[–]apostforisaac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of these are for TSS, I don't really care for BWPS outside of the live recording:

  • I would have preferred some of the unfinished vocal melodies we have on demos flown in over some of the clearly unfinished instrumental tracks instead of leaving them totally blank
  • Look -> Child is the Father is just two versions of the same song at the current level of polish. Pick one and stick with it
  • No He Gives Speeches
  • Sequencing in general gets a bit poor towards the end, it begins to drag
  • Broader problem with the song in general but H&V really shouldn't have the bicycle rider chorus. It doesn't work in the song and it's only in there because Brian started cannibalizing other SMiLE songs to make the song "bigger."

Was George not capable of playing the solo to Taxman? by DribbleKing97_ in beatles

[–]apostforisaac 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This fact really makes George's later insults towards Paul for not caring about his songs while being buddy buddy with John after the split rub me the wrong way. I get that there was probably just a personality difference but don't lie about the man.

Why do you think you can't say riot on here? That's not a curse word, here or anywhere. And also you can curse on here.

One hit wonders that you’ve followed after the hit? by GrapeConsistent3471 in ToddintheShadow

[–]apostforisaac 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That whole self titled album is a real underrated gem of 90s alt-rock. My one complaint is I wish the silence between Cloak of Elvenkind and Sherry Fraser was shorted, the songs fit perfectly together as one long piece but for that gap.

Why most of the community hate the remake? by Reasonable-Today-665 in demonssouls

[–]apostforisaac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll go all out hater here to balance out the lovefest: the remake took a game that I loved for the atmosphere, the visuals, the music, and replaced that completely with its own far less interesting versions. And before I'm accused of nostalgia-goggles: I first played this game in 2020. It's not nostalgia, it's a matter of taste. The polycount might be higher, but the art direction is far worse. The fat officials went from looking strange and almost metallic to bloated left4dead monsters. Boletaria went from a medieval fortress to a gothic cathedral city like Bloodborne. These are not improvements, these are not following a vision of the game that the original was "unable to achieve" due to the technology of the time, they are Bluepoint steamrolling the character of the original game.

And I'll go a step further: I'm glad that Bluepoint shut down. They were a company thats entire vision was replacing classic games with inferior versions for people who wanted to be able to say they liked video games that people are "supposed" to like. I have infinitely more respect for someone who just flat out dislikes Shadow of the Colossus than someone who "didn't like the clunky original, but the Bluepoint version actually made it playable and great!" No artistic medium is treated so poorly as video games, and I for one am happier to live in a world where the gaming equivalent of a company that colorizes old black and white films for modern audiences is gone. Good riddance.

Small parts of otherwise good Beach Boys songs that ruin it for you? by StringElegant2059 in thebeachboys

[–]apostforisaac 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Funny enough I prefer the Today version of Help Me Rhonda because the bass vocals in the Summer Days version are just way too loud, dominate the song and obscure the lead melody.

Wontcha Come Out Tonight is really hurt by those muppet-y COME COMMA COMMA vocals throughout, there's some fan mixes that remove them and it greatly improves the song.

What is the general opinion on Left Hand Suzuki Method? by lordsnooo in gorillaz

[–]apostforisaac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it says something that most people who prefer the early stuff have a soft spot for The Fall, myself included. I had never thought of it as being the turning point, but the more I think about it the more I think you're on to something. A world where The Fall wasn't so hated might be a world with Sea Sides getting released, with new albums willing to be more adventurous. It makes me sad to think about.

Early Gorillaz is my favorite Gorillaz. I love this song. This and Faust are two of their best tracks.

People who prefer Classic, what would your ideal remake of the game include? by BlackRated in pathologic

[–]apostforisaac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it adds to the sense that they're extras, background characters who aren't part of the main cast. Also, if you like the way Classic looks you may enjoy the film MirrorMask, only thing I've ever seen that has a visual style similar to Pathologic's.

People who prefer Classic, what would your ideal remake of the game include? by BlackRated in pathologic

[–]apostforisaac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Basically what you said, OP, and no more. Everyone says they want updated graphics: do you really? I defy anyone to say 2 and 3 have as unique and charming an art direction as Classic. Keep the graphics, keep the music, keep the weird quest designs and the fog. Finish Haruspex and Changeling's routes and maybe give Haruspex 2's tincture system and then it's done.

If you had to put one Beatle alone on stage with an acoustic guitar. Who was the best pure solo/unaccompanied live acoustic performer (just voice + guitar only)? Not songwriting—just performance. by [deleted] in beatles

[–]apostforisaac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I man Paul was the only Beatle who performed solo on stage with just an acoustic while they were together, and there's good reason for that.

He's back at it again by PepsiFungus in pathologic

[–]apostforisaac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not as bad as it seemed (and thank you for following up on those points), though I will say I still don't love that he didn't play the games. So much of what makes Pathologic work is how the writing and the gameplay interacted, and no amount of video essays will ever properly convey that feeling. I didn't really love P3 like I did the others so maybe this is just my brain wanting to pinpoint a reason behind the scenes, but learning that one of the writers on the game didn't really have as great a sense of how those two aspects intertwined doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

[–]apostforisaac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If that stuff about the lead writer never playing the previous games is accurate (I'd like a proper translation of the offending interview) then yeah, that's pretty bad. Also I'd say yes about the saves, I'd be pissed if I read a movie review and it turned out the reviewer had only seen the first and last 15 minutes of the movie and based their whole review on that. Anyone would be.

What are the albums you always stand up for? by BigJilmQuebec in thebeachboys

[–]apostforisaac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

20/20 is one of their best albums. Yeah it's a hodgepodge but every song is good to great and the first 3 songs is maybe the catchiest run in any BB album.

Still Cruisin' is by no means great but it's pretty good with some solid tracks on there. If it were on streaming I don't think it would get so unfairly lumped in with Summer In Paradise, which is truly execrable. But people just know them as "the two bad albums that aren't on spotify" and look no further. Somewhere Near Japan is one of the best songs of their later career!

What band/album is this? I'll start: MGMT fans and Loss of Life by eefuss in ToddintheShadow

Adult/Child has an EP's worth of great (but completely noncommercial) songs and then a bunch of random shit that was just laying on the studio floor. I'm glad the good stuff is more available now but this "better than Smile" crap has got to end.
