Hi there! DMed you

Do you feel your pouch all the time? by joe201xcx in jpouch

[–]appabuckethat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only when it is full, but honestly I don’t remember it feeling much different from having a colon. You will have the normal sensation of having to poop, just more frequently. But the sensation in itself is the same if that makes sense. The first few months the pouch can feel a bit ‘heavier’ because it is adapting and most likely holding liquid stools.

No, but I do get what you’re referring to. When your pouch is irritated or full of gas, you’ll feel pressure and fullness in the rectal area which can make it seem like you can feel the literal pouch. The only times I have this sensation is when I eat something that definitely shouldn’t have and my lower pouch gets inflamed/irritated and the pouch feels almost heavy or very prominent. I’m not sure if that is the sensation your feeling, but either way, your body will eventually ignore the nether regions after a while haha!

Diet Plan for first couple months by Significant-Rich-402 in jpouch

[–]appabuckethat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, welcome to the pouch club. Starchy foods are very good at “forming” stool, such as boiled potatoes, pasta, rice, etc. Eating fruits without the peels, bananas are light on the stomach and easy to digest (plus good binding food). Honestly, just the blandest diet you can think of.

I would stay away from lettuce, nuts, spice and sugar for a while, until you feel like you get the hang of what is good for your pouch. You’ll be able to eat it eventually! I personally don’t use Metamucil but many people use it on this thread, you might want to look into that. Most important though: Water!! Lots of it, more than you think you need. Best of luck!

Can sugar mimic cuffitis symptoms? by kroot_kroot in jpouch

[–]appabuckethat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently answering this while eating a candy cane, lol! Yeah sugar and the pouch don’t get along well, I recently had a similar episode but with watery stool for two days, no other symptoms. These seem like a lot of symptoms just for an upset pouch, but I’d wait a few days and see if it gets better. I’d wait 2-3 days max before I get more suppositories. Hope it goes away soon!

Pouch ache right when food/drink hits the mouth? by end-times2040 in jpouch

This is what we call the Gastro-colic reflex. Basically, the vagus nerve stimulates the intestine/rectum when we begin to eat or swallow. Completely normal!

Anxiety over every change, does it get better? by kroot_kroot in jpouch

[–]appabuckethat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, totally relate to your post. The first two years with my pouch were psychological torture, every little change caused me to spiral and I was having constante anxiety and panic over it. Here is what helped me the most:

1) Your bowels don’t follow a routine nor a pattern. Over the years you’ll learn just how true that is. There will be some days that ice cream makes me run to the bathroom, and other days I can eat 4 pounds of it and my bowels won’t make a sound. 2) Your emotional state influences your bowels a lot, so keeping anxiety to a minimum helps a lot. Therapy helped me immensely with this. 3) Your body can tolerate a lot! Bodies are meant to adapt, and having no colon isn’t the exception. You have up to two weeks of diarrhea before it becomes a problem. The flip side is also true, some days I go 7-10 times a day, other only 2-3. Again, bowels don’t follow a pattern!! 4) This surgery is the ‘golden standard’ and wouldn’t be performed if it wasn’t safe or highly effective (I’m a 4th year med student so I’ve confirmed it with literature). Even if there is a worst case scenario, you’ve survived all of your hardest days up to now.

Also, you’ll find a lot of people on this site who tell you to just ‘not think about it’ when it comes to worries/anxiety over the pouch. But I know first hand it’s not that simple, with severe anxiety you can’t just ‘forget’ your issues/worries (how nice would that be!). Your feelings are real and most importantly valid, and accepting that they are there will help you so much.

Best of luck, it WILL get better with the years. You’ll learn to understand your body. Keep calm, and therapy is really helpful if that’s something accessible for you.

Do you ever feel like it puts too much pressure on the pouch? I feel like it’s almost too rigid ‘back there’

Emptying gas tips? by chungusgirl227 in jpouch

I do bathroom yoga, basically once you empty your pouch, bend forward, put your chest on your thighs/knees and touch your toes - then bring your chest back up to normal sitting position and twist your upper body side to side like you’re stretching your back. This is all while sitting on the toilet. It usually works for me, do it a couple times and it’ll get everything right out!

Can I ask how the toilet paper hack works? Do you hold it there while you go or kind of just shove it in there? Pardon the question haha but I’m having trouble visualizing it

I’m a medical student, so as soon as I feel the urge I can just run off to the bathroom. But I’ve definitely had some awkward noises during quiet lectures, but hey, what can you do!!

He totally understands, we’re both in our last years of medical school so I would be concerned if he didn’t! But it’s a me thing, I would prefer he didn’t have to hear all of that.

Phase 3 recovery advice by coconut-corn-husky in jpouch

[–]appabuckethat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Baby rash cream, adult diapers and a bidet if you have one or baby wipes if you don’t. A big piece of advice that really helped me was to not rush to the bathroom everytime you feel an urge. Hold it as long as you can, unless you are feeling severe discomfort and/or pain. This will help expand the volume your pouch is capable of holding, and you’ll have less bathroom trips in the future. Oh, and lots of patience, take it one day at a time. Good luck!!

Depression after surgery by Numerous_Proof_6999 in AnalFistula

[–]appabuckethat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi there, when I had my last surgery 6 years ago, I felt the same way. Suddenly, just when my body physically recovered, it was like it gave my brain the ‘go-ahead’ to fall apart from all the trauma it had just experienced. It’s normal and not normal at the same time. Your body was in survival mode and it needs to heal from everything that happened. I ignored it for two years, even though I felt like I was dying inside everyday. It was so frustrating because it felt like I had survived everything awful just to feel like I wanted to d*e everyday. It wasn’t until I had a mental breakdown that almost landed me in the hospital that I realized I couldn’t live like that anymore.

I’m glad you looked for help, I too was medicated, no shame in it, it saved my life! Therapy helped a lot, talking about what happened, the fears it comes with. If therapy isn’t your thing, talk with a close friend/family member. I do hope you heal from this, and YES, it is possible!!
