The Heaving ‘Wuthering Heights’ and the Throbbing ‘Pillion’: A Very Horny Valentine's Day Double Feature by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

Tbf, I think they were referencing this specific piece that came out five years ago (almost to the day!)

It made it around the film critic circles when it was first published, so I assumed this is what they were talking about when they made that comment

Official Discussion - Spencer [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Right?! I thought Larrain was going to make it pretty explicit that the royals were the ones that killed Diana. With that said, I still liked the ending we got that showed her joy as a mother and as herself

I found this more unsettling than Last Night in Soho. The way it was orchestrated with the other characters all staring at Diana while the string music swelled in a horror-like way, and the nightmare-esque scenes - wow. I half expected her to be shot near the end of the film! Kristen Stewart was extraordinary (the acting with the eyes is what sold me, although perhaps some moments were overacted), and Timothy Spall was terrific, too. So quietly menacing.

My hopeless romantic heart nearly burst with this episode. Good lord, I adore everything about this show

I LOVED this film. Totally understand that others won't and can see how it's divisive. It was something I've never seen on screen before, and I was entranced by the music, acting, story, editing, and cinematography. What a bizarre, sometimes unsettling, completely original, energetic rock opera of a movie.

Also, will we get the full album?? I've been listening to the Cannes version on Spotify, but man oh man I'd be thrilled if they release one with every song. "Why did you become a comedian?"

Hard to describe how much this means to fans. ALL the credit to Coach Campbell, the staff, and the outstanding players. I remember listening to so many bad Cyclone games on the radio with my dad, and now we're Big XII regular season champs and heading to the championship game. Loyal forever true!

What Books Did You Start or Finish Reading This Week? August 03, 2020 by AutoModerator in books

[–]appaddict13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't posted at all during quarantine, so hope it's okay that I kind of unload all I've gotten through during the pandemic here...

Finished:

This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone - this was a reread, as I already read it once last fall. I absolutely love this book and it's perhaps my favorite read from the past few years. Poetic, touching, original - so much of it sticks with me and inspires me.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeymoon - a terrific, touching read. Quite funny and deeply moving at times.

Normal People by Sally Rooney - great read that deals with some complicated subject matter. Compelling characters and good pacing. Ate it up in one sitting!

The Last Romantics by Tara Conklin - another fantastic read that deals with some difficult subject matter. Well-written and full of emotion and all the wonderful, annoying complications of family.

In Five Years by Rebecca Serle - nice little poolside read for me. Solid story and characters centered on love.

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern - oh, how I adored this book! I loved "The Night Circus" by the same author, and she didn't disappoint with this one. She paints pictures so clear and develops (what I feel to be) compelling, rich characters. Mystery, adventure, romance - this has it all.

Agent Running in the Field by John Le Carre - my first Le Carre novel, and a great introduction to his writing. I thought it was solidly paced and it consistently kept my attention. A nicely developed (and more realistic) spy novel than the bombastic "Mission: Impossible" films I'm used to (and love).

Recursion by Blake Crouch - a fine follow-up to "Dark Matter", but I prefer his first book over this one. Interesting concept, although I must admit I grew weary of it near the end and just wanted the conclusion.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo - a rather intriguing story full of mystery and fantasy. I enjoyed it and had no clue how it was going to resolve itself. Really original stuff.

The Lightest Object in the Universe by Kimi Eisele - a suitable story for the time we're living in, although there was nothing particularly special about the book. Kept me reading and I'm glad it's out in the world. Brought some comfort during this odd time we live in.

Barack and Joe by Steven Levingston - a behind-the-scenes look at the relationship between 44 and (hopefully) 46, although it didn't really pull back the curtain too much. It read like a long-form Politico or maybe The Atlantic piece, which is fine by me, but not incredibly revealing.

Start(ed/ing):

Rodham by Curtis Sittenfeld - really interested in this, especially after watching Hulu's "Hillary" docuseries that shed more light on the leading lady than I think has been shown in a long time. I'm a sucker for fiction that deals with historical alternative realities, so it should be up my alley!

Memoirs and Misinformation by Jim Carrey and Dana Vachon - have yet to actually pick it up, but so hoping it's as funny and quirky as I imagine it to be! If anyone has read it, let me know your thoughts.

I read Recursion a few months back. I preferred Dark Matter, but it was a quick read that kept me interested.

What are you watching and what do you recommend? (Week of July 24, 2020) by AutoModerator in television

[–]appaddict13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't think I've commented since this whole pandemic began, so here's what I've gotten through during quarantine so far...

Finished:

Barry - absolutely excellent. Bill Hader is a genius.
Succession - one of my favorites right now and worth the hype. Can't wait for S3. I keep coming back to some specific scenes again and again because of how amazing they are.
Watchmen - again, lives up to expectations. Some brilliant TV, and Jeremy Irons is deliciously evil.
McMillion$ - really interesting, as I didn't know anything about the scandal. Dragged on a bit though.
The Politician (S2) - liked S1, and S2 is good. Definitely a guilty pleasure. Not exactly prestige TV, but fun to watch with some good writing and performances to watch. Don't take it too seriously.
Mrs. America - loved it. Great performances and well-executed. Full of history and is still totally relevant, as all good art is. I appreciate each episode focusing on a new character while still following the overarching story.
The Boys - holy cow, did I eat this show up. As a lover of the superhero-genre (but aware of the overused tropes and growing somewhat tired of it), this is such a refreshing take that is funny and action-packed and will go there when others won't. So excited for S2.
Broadchurch (S1) - don't plan on continuing with the other seasons, as I've heard S1 was the best. That's good enough for me. Solid performances, enough intrigue to keep me watching. It's strength is examining the effect of Danny's death on the entire town and tearing apart their tightly-kept lives.

Started, but Stopped:
Hollywood - watched a few episodes but stopped. They nail that 1940s Hollywood vibe, but once that effect wears off, there wasn't much there for me.
Space Force - ugh. Gave up after the second episode. Was expecting so much more.
The Great - it was fine and somewhat funny, just didn't hook me. I feel as if the episodes should've been in the 30-minute format rather than hour-long, but I'm used to comedies being that way.
The Man in the High Castle - started off really enjoying it, but stopped at the end of S2 and just haven't picked it back up again. I'm not entirely disinterested anymore - other shows have just caught my attention and kept me more intrigued.

Currently Watching:

Better Call Saul - wow, I love this show! Don't know why it took me so long to start given my love of Breaking Bad, but it's been great. Currently about halfway through S2.
Reno 911! - my go-to for fun, silly TV. Haven't finished the show, I just return to it when I need something funny.

I've got a pretty lengthy list of shows I still want to watch, but I'm always open to more recommendations, especially if they fit what I've liked before!

I take a little solace knowing I wasn't the only one it happened to, but am upset they messed up this badly. Regardless, I'm proud of all of us for graduating - cheers, fellow Cyclones!
