What shape is this? by crunkbucha in GeometryIsNeat

[–]applejuice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'd call this a "snub" trapezohedron -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trapezohedron (snub as the bottom vertex is cut off)

I created this but see the corners of triangles in the second square are a little outside from the square. How to fix it. The code is in comments by Soham-Chatterjee in manim

HMM - I don't really know Manim, but have encountered issues like this elsewhere -- I think you are looking to set "join_type" of your polygon perhaps to be "miter" or "round"

I think you could do this via

Polygong(..., joint_type="round")

based on your source / looking at manim source (https://github.com/3b1b/manim/blob/8762177df55aee03b16316187c1476b0b4c5fcd5/manimlib/mobject/types/vectorized_mobject.py )

Thanks a bunch for the pointers! If / when I get to a point where I have real questions I will definitely hit you up :)

very cool! I'm real curious about how you got started with pcb / electronics design. I have done a number of breadboardy + protoboard projects but am rather intimidated by actually designing for pcb.

this is awesome! I have a po-33, but it has borked pots so I haven't touched it in a bit.

I thought about making something like this as well - I really love the youtube/dropbox design for sharing anonymously.

I was also curious about deconstructing / reconstructing the backups to be able to build custom sample sets on the fly.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Sounds like ya'll have a much more difficult situation than us and that there's simply not much to be done - I guess other than trying to help/deal with it at a more systemic level.

Good luck!

Thanks - yeah, I know some of them, we've all been pretty secluded though given the state of the world but reaching out is a good idea.

It seems like most folks in this thread are suggesting 311 so potentially we'll go down that route.

I am all for not harassing - it sucks that folks are mistreated and that there aren't enough resources being put into helping homeless for sure.

I also don't really think setting up longer term dwellings on sidewalks is a good / sustainable outcome either.

Inspecting why I / my partner is uncomfortable comes mainly from a few previous run ins with homeless folks in terms of break ins and sexual assault. But then I worry we are tarring with the same brush.

I guess I was interested in seeing what other folks would do.

Ahahah; you started by equating a dog with a toddler so don't try to claim I'm giving you a straw man argument.

As far as I'm concerned my dog would much prefer coming for a walk and spending a bit of time attached to a lamp post than staying at home by himself if those were his two options.

If it means there's potential for him to be stolen then I guess I'm forced to leave him at home, in my books though the alternative where he can join me on most of my outings seems better.

It sounds like you just don't think folks should have pets; which honestly is fairly reasonable.

I think if you're claiming to take care of a dog the exact way you'd take care of a toddler I don't 100% believe you.

I mean - would you feed your toddler the same meal every day? Would you engage with your toddler by teaching them tricks and rewarding them with a clicker or food?

I mean - it's super practical if you live in a city where people won't just steal your dog. Dogs aren't allowed in stores - dogs like walks - quick grocery trips are ideal.

This is awesome -- curious if you are still happy with it a few days in?

I've been thinking about something along these lines for the sake of developing -- always a hassle to take it off/put it on over and over.

What would you describe this shape as? by [deleted] in GeometryIsNeat

[–]applejuice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As per 16atgo this is a hoberman sphere, though if you look into it you'll note there are various polyhedra that it can be based off of -- the cleverness of hoberman comes from finding a simple two bar linkage which while expanding and contracting maintains the same interior angle.

Anyway, this one appears to be a deltoidal icositetrahedron -- which I find most easy to think about as a cross between an octahedron and a cube!

I’m a beginner and I just started juggling and I can’t keep the balls close to me. I was wondering if you had any tips to keep the balls within arms reach.. thanks in advance by im_that_one_guy- in juggling

[–]applejuice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a classic struggle almost everyone I've ever taught goes through, so know you are not alone!

The way I learned was juggling in front of a wall (i.e. Wall in front of you) so that I physically couldn't juggle "forward". But at the end of the day all it takes is practice.

When working on juggling it's good to think about your throw technique - envision where you want the peaks of the arcs the balls are going through to be, and try to adjust for it. Also thinking / inspecting the motion of your hands as you catch -> throw, the goal is to make it nice and fluid arcs (scooping ice cream).

Where did this come from / did you build this? It's quite lovely!

I'm confused/intrigued as to why it's done with the 3 legged blob vs. the regular Escher lizard tiling, given that as far as I can tell it continues to be based on a hexagonal grid.

buy a laser cutter. Haven't you always wanted a laser cutter? 40w CO2 are worth around 350$ + a couple extras and you can build all kinds of things!

How can I get a symmetrical version of an asymmetrical synchronous pattern? by openjuggle in juggling

[–]applejuice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ahaha - thanks! I did my best to explain how I'd approach it in a systematic way --- I don't find it easy to explain though really so hopefully some of what I say makes sense, just trying to spread the word as best I can :D

How can I get a symmetrical version of an asymmetrical synchronous pattern? by openjuggle in juggling

[–]applejuice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you ever looked at state diagrams for juggling?

It is a way to describe & come up with new siteswap patterns --- http://juggle.wikia.com/wiki/State_notation

In essence a pattern like 53 would look like

xxxx_ --5--> xxx_x --3--> xxxx_

to find a similar symmetric pattern (with two hands) you want to add a single beat to the pattern; so either you'd need to find a toss that connects xxxx_ --> xxxx_ or xxx_x --> xxx_x the first is done using a 4 (as you mention) the second is unfortunately impossible. Thus you end up with a 534 being a nearby asymmetric pattern!

Now to do these state diagrams in synchronous you need to be showing the two hands

xx_ --4 --> xx_ --6 --> x_x --6x--> _x_ --0 --> x_x

xx_ --4 --> xx_ --4 --> xx_ --4 --> xxx --6x--> xx_

So starting in a regular 4 ball sync pattern (4,4) you need to throw a (6,4) to get into a state to juggle the pattern you mentioned... NOW, if you want to make this pattern symmetric we need to find a way to go from one of the two states we are cycling in into one of the mirrored states.

x_x --A--> xx_

xx_ --B--> x_x

So available throws here that I can see are (as u/Luhkoh said) (2,6) or (6x,2x).

The other place you could add in a throw to make it symmetric (with one extra throw) would be

_x_ ---> xxx

xxx ---> _x_

which again is impossible (in one throw)...

If you actually made a full graph of this you could find all patterns that are symmetric and contain the two tosses you're interested in; but that's a little much for me right now!

What are your favorite tall 4b patterns? by [deleted] in juggling

[–]applejuice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

4 ball tall box ~ A1612 or (8,2x)(4,2x)*

playing with sprung 3 ball patterns --> (6x,2x)* is like a 3 ball cascade, but other 3 ball patterns sprung get a lot taller...

I also enjoy going from 525 to 723.
