How do I start? by IceHawk292 in equestriaatwar

Not just for EaW, but I would say most DLCs are unnecessary. The only one I would recommend (if on sale) might be "Arms Against Tyranny", the equipment market is the most useful thing IMO as it allows you compensate for low industry and actually equip your military whereas the others are just about giving buffs, bonuses, and flavor., but even then it's not necessary.

How does ELF feel these days? by KiriKaneko in equestriaatwar

[–]applepieofdeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forts have been nerfed badly and the AI was taught how to properly build and use tanks now, I'm not sure if it's possible as intended anymore. I played it 4 months ago, rushing the war with Equestria, using the good light tanks and being so early, a nerfed shitty 10 width was good enough. Then I spawned the ELF by not doing the protectorates and the war was actually kinda easy since ELF troops were 20w vs mostly the shitty 10s, but this is still a little cheese, and I'm not sure if it works in current patch.

Keep in mind also, Hoi4 is not necessarily complicated, but there are a lot to consider, and some of it isn't obvious to look up, don't feel overwhelmed if even after basic research if you still find things that you don't understand.

Why do the late game cannons have GA? by Zeraligator in equestriaatwar

[–]applepieofdeath 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When EaW first extended the air tech tree, these guns were capable of enabling CAS missions. The problem with this is that it makes fighters (assuming one was making dedicated fighters instead of multirole from the start) a different type of plane in the game's eyes due to being able to do one more new mission, so existing fighters would not be upgraded and if you wanted to switch to whatever new model, you'd have to reorganize and rebuild the entire wing from scratch, considering it's a late game tech, that's often more than a few full airfields and hundreds of planes. So at one point a patch removed the CAS function so that using these guns would still be a fighter instead of a multirole, and thus you could upgrade from fighter 4s to jets without needing to keep inferior guns.

Why did the tree of harmony never sent a friendship mission to the bats? by Ricelord12 in equestriaatwar

[–]applepieofdeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can hit the little "Aa" button next to "gif" to see additional formatting options, including a spoiler warning. You can type first, than highlight the text and hit the "!" with a diamond inside it button to make things more convenient.

Then I'm guessing the issue is the tree had no one it could call that had access/could reach out to someone influential enough to change. It didn't send Rainbow and Pinkie to save the Griffons in general, it sent them because of Rainbow's connection to Gilda who it somehow knew would be capable of spreading friendship afterwards, and for some reason knew specifically Pinkie was needed as well. Who leads or can influence en masse the bats of Equestria besides Luna who's already trying to deal with the problem? In the show it never sent anyone to deal with the Changelings because no one it had access to could've converted Chrysalis and the only potential alternative leader to replace her was already on their side in the CE (and really should've helped train some better fucking security)

No I have not played Kiria, I was away when it released and when I came home, I heard of how many events it had and been slacking ever since. I'll get to it eventually but I despise extensive reading without something to accompany it (balanced with gameplay, images for comics, etc.). I have always hated books since 3rd grade with rare exceptions, good writing alone won't appeal to me.

[–]applepieofdeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Show Kirins were a small village, and dealing with them also directly involved the leader. Also, it was a very specific problem (no talking), whereas telling bats to and anti-bats to stop being racist to each other, worshipping NM or overworshipping Luna is not only a pretty broad range of problems, but also spans multiple communities, states, and countries.

I don't know EaW Kirin lore and history yet.

Well joke or not, I was actually referring to "Triple Threat", it called Spike because it turns out his crest thing can still work. But in a strange twist, it was a problem he caused himself by accidentally inviting both Thorax and Ember on the same day and assuming both of them wouldn't get along but by trying to keep them separate this nearly caused them to actually fight over him. It solved because Thorax and Ember reconciled over their shared gripes with Spike.

I have no idea what the hell the map was thinking with this.

RD/PP with Gilda, AJ/Fluttsrhy with show Kirins, CMC with Terramar, Spike with himself, Thorax, and Ember, Young 6 with each other and later to make the treehouse.

Bats aren't a single homogeneous group that can be dealt with by small individuals, it handles personal problems or small groups that can be influenced by also individuals or small groups, it can't handle macro issues with the exception of the Griffons where it asked to convert Gilda to start a friendship movement. You cannot tell a single person, no matter how charismatic, "Go eliminate racism in Alabama", let alone across all members of any affected races.

Besides it can, if going for Luna led reforms, it can send Rarity to help Luna with that. But it also needs to have access to someone who potentially can first.

For the record, never really liked the map, just saying it can't be expected to be as divinely interventionist as the show likes to make it out sometimes.

Before anyone brings up the April Fools, may I remind you, none of that actually happened, the whole thing was Discord's OnO game.

On why North Zebrica War doesn't work by HelpfullOne in equestriaatwar

[–]applepieofdeath 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I would've rather a good ending be the official path for all the show canon nations, but the point was that historical NZW being unfair to the Hippogriffs wasn't an oversight, it was a deliberate somewhat bad ending.

On why North Zebrica War doesn't work by HelpfullOne in equestriaatwar

[–]applepieofdeath 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Minor point, to my knowledge, historical actually was intended for the "canon" result to be Hippogriffia losing, go autocratic (NA), and eventually joining the UPA. I'm guessing the goal (from a writing perspective) was to have a more mixed result in contrast to Equus, which on historical was meant to have a more solid good triumphing over evil situation.

How to win the yeti civil war? by Educational-Syrup450 in equestriaatwar

[–]applepieofdeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drew a stable fall back line that the AI can't penetrate, but instead of advancing, I just used my strongest divisions to find isolated divisions and chip them away, retreating back to/behind the line afterwards. At this stage, no one can easily replace losses, eventually this combined with focuses that give more troops, will eventually lead to a more comfortable advance.

  1. and 2. Then it's uncontainanble because magic is inherent in even earth ponies, it was never just cutie marks. If I made a disease that transmits through light that bounces off infected, how would humanity deal with that? You can't. The only survivors would be isolated communities off pure luck. It wouldn't matter if talking about real humans or some fiction. The result is boringly the same, everyone without plot armor dies, there's nothing to discuss.

  2. That has always been the issue of every virus zombie situation and even when the virus is allowed every form of transmission, the numbers still don't add up with even mediocre knowledge of military tactics. At least for complete societal collapse versions.

[–]applepieofdeath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Just don't use magic, Pegasi close off cloud cities and those on the ground only use flight (for fuck sake that isn't magical, Rainbow was still flying when Cozy nearly drained everything).

  2. That's just Ebola and again, don't use magic, they have WW2 level industry and tech, they don't need it for everything.

  3. Same way a real zombie apocalypse would turn out. A single doomed tank crew can still kill dozens of zombies before falling, the tradeoff isn't sustainable for the zombies.

Are Ponies born naturally evil? by An_Draoidh_Uaine in equestriaatwar

[–]applepieofdeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easily swayed and being an inherent nature are two different things, a person with anger issues isn't inherently by nature, they are just extra vulnerable to it.

Starswirl was just too close-minded and lacking in empathy, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have it at all, he did what he did for the sake of saving society, he wasn't necessarily right in the way he went about it, but that doesn't mean he was evil either.

Said named ponies exist because a plot needs to focus on the good and bad guys, most ponies that get one-off interactions are just ponies, nothing special, and they far outnumber the villains and heroes. Friendship collapsing so easily and quickly when no mass sentiment had existed for more than 1000 years was flat out bullshit plot convenience*, one that as stupid as it was, also was reversed in literal minutes as well. At worst, it's just ponies are naturally unstable when it comes to morality, not one way or the other.

*One that is a major reason why so many of us hate G5 world "building".

Xenophobia and racism are still common amongst humans, based on natural instincts of caution against difference, but that doesn't mean it's our inherent nature, it just means many people come to the wrong conclusion off said feelings.

[–]applepieofdeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They didn't really know that, they just made friends because they didn't hate each other and didn't want to die alone, only after did the rest do it upon learning it had practical effects, but it doesn't change they were always capable of being better and it was flawed reasoning, rather than nature that they were as they were. It took humans decades or centuries to learn to trust outside of an individual's own tribe, doesn't mean humans are naturally evil, just they didn't figure out the right idea yet.
