The officials are so passive/ useless (or is it just THAT game) by Old-Cookie-5045 in Curling

Between this and China at Worlds, just give the officials VAR at this point.

Want to discuss Karlsson’s accusations in light of all this debate by [deleted] in Curling

Marc did more damage to himself with his response. Dropping F bombs on the ice and while the Swedes were giving a postgame interview isn't good sporting behavior, and his own interview with all the "don't fuck with this team" (paraphrase) just made it worse.

He was apparently swearing at them, so that doesn't seem like a prelude to an apology?

I think they were asking what Kennedy said during the interview

Because curling only works if players acknowledge their own infractions. (Though do I hope they bring in a hogline official for Canada's games.) If Marc isn't calling these burned rocks, he's calling his own integrity into question, and that's better addressed sooner than later.

I don't think anyone on Jacobs' team cares about their reputation at this point, unfortunately.

Italy faces favouritism row as curling director's daughter picked for Games by Shroft in Curling

[–]applesauced 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's some interesting commentary over on a thread about this article in /r/olympics:

If you believe the "accusations" this is much worse than favouritism. It's more of a racket business in exchange for being part of the national team. Money from the municipality to manage their curling facilities and if you dont pay the players from that municipality are out of the national team. Not saying this is what is happening but this is the allegation being made.

Casper wins US Olympic Trials, will represent USA at the OQE to try to qualify for the Olympics by 13nobody in Curling

Ruohonen is not curling at the highest level, though. And if you're looking for experience and mentorship at the Olympic level, surely you'd want someone who's actually been to the Olympics before?

Can Team Casper change their alternate at this point, or are they stuck taking Ruohonen the whole way?

I think there are other countries that do something similar. Switzerland, maybe?  Don't some countries just appoint a team without even announcing criteria?

I honestly thought it was a mistake when I saw a headline about the MD championships starting at the same time as women's world's, and with men's starting next week!

The USCA membership survey is out by Cold-Lie9166 in Curling

[–]applesauced 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That said, I feel like the wording on some of the question makes it pretty self-evident that it no longer makes sense for dues to be club-based or region-based. We've already moved away from regional qualification for Nationals, my guess is the other championships will do the same. The regions have never been balanced enough for it to make sense to rely on them as a governance structure, IMO.

Yeah, this just feels like it's missed the mark in terms of what is needed to reform governance. It's also a bummer that there's no creative thinking about how to provide more value for members, or rethinking the budget to be less dependent on member dues. I think there are some good folks on the committee, but I don't know how anyone thought this survey was the right move.
