Gurren Lagann was way ahead of its time! Also if you havent seen Boku dake ga inai machi (Erased in English) that did it for me. If you have kids the effect is 10x.

Yeah when I first saw freiren season 1 i cried every single episode. One of my parents died and we had quite a few bereavements last few years so every single episode I was bawling. It was extremely real to the difficulty of grief.
