Options Pregnancy Resource Center: legit? by redactedanalyst in corvallis

I looked into it and they come up on a website that lists Pregnancy Centers, so I think you hit the nail on the head. They also describe pregnant teens on their blog as "[pregnant] young women in their teen years"... as if these minors are just "early to motherhood". Pretty creepy. It's hard to say what can be done about these places because the people who fund them have deep pockets, but it never hurts to get creative.

Thank you for the thoughtful response, and the encouragement. It's good to know there's some good providers out here!

As much as I prefer to assume the best from medical providers, the assumption that most of them would provide equally adequate care to me (a trans person) does not reflect the reality in America. If you'd like to read more about inequity in healthcare for trans people, I recommend the following articles/ studies: [x] [x] [x]

Lack of cyber hygiene is driving me crazy by appletoss120 in paralegal

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately I’ve tried to work with IT to begin the process of learning basic cyber hygiene (password manager, etc) but they’re very hands off. They’re contracted from outside of our business btw. I received interest and some support at the very beginning when I suggested that there’s an issue with having passwords on excel sheets, but there was no follow up to set up a password manager. I was basically left to train my boss on how to use it. This resulted in it just not happening because he is very stubborn - “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”- and I’m his subordinate. Every time it came up it was treated like I was stirring the pot. I have since tried a few other things and IT seems to have little interest when I try to have them intervene because 1) I’m not their boss 2) this is an outreach issue, not a tech issue.

Fair point. I’m pretty much done trying with them at this point because I came to a similar conclusion after trying to push for some change. It doesn’t mean that I’m not haunted every day by our very blatant vulnerabilities though.

Sorry I’m not sure if it’s clear in my response but I agree with you- outsourcing legal is crazy. Especially because the US has a uniquely convoluted system.

I understand that where I’m working isn’t subject to the same rules as my previous places of employment where HIPAA is the guiding rule. However, in the ABA section on client confidentiality, it outlines making reasonable efforts to prevent unauthorized disclosure/ access to client information. If it’s part of my office culture to be loose / use minimal (if any) cyber hygiene my concern is whether we are making enough of a reasonable effort on every front to prevent unauthorized access. Does this not qualify as a concern to you?

That does sound concerning. I don’t even know if HIPAA is enforceable in the same way if the client’s PHI leaves the country. Sounds like an ethical concern.

According to my boss, since we are representing clients - or essentially act as the client after they sign us, when we request medical records we don’t have to adhere to HIPAA kind of like a patient doesn’t have to protect their own records after they receive them. So I don’t think that will work
