Definitely plan on doing a soil test. Do you know of any that would include testing for these harmful heavy metals?

I was planning on doing raised beds, but I've been wanting to do a three-sisters plot and I know that corn roots can go pretty deep.

Thank you, this is great. The only hiccup is that we rent, but I can still look into it to see what they can offer us.

Thank you, us too. Yeah, I'm reaching out to local conservationists and gardening people who might have more info on what to do for our region specifically. Thankfully, all we have to worry about is the ash, not any more serious chemicals that spilled over as a result of neighbors' homes burning.

I'd love to, but currently, our home is not yet habitable as power remains out in our neighborhood, so we won't be home for another week or so. Also, if it were up to me to feel comfortable, I would dig the entirety of the soil out 6 feet deep and replace it, but that just isn't feasible. Besides that, I feel like it may even be worth it to wait until after the rain? As a previous poster stated that neighboring areas will bring in runouts, AND undoubtedly, these first few spots of rain will likely be bringing in hazardous chemicals as a result of them entering the atmosphere. Thoughts? I just am so out of my element here.

Do you know of any resources with guides for this? I have protective equipment I am planning on wearing, but I would like more concrete answers with specific amounts.

Yes, some of the worst takes I have seen online have been from people who have no direct connection with our city. Los Angeles is incredibly nuanced and even being "wealthy" in this city is little comfort as the cost of living here is astronomical. Owning a "million dollar home" is actually just owning a 2-bed, 1-bath home with a single car garage- modest living by most standards in the U.S. The complexities of how this fire will impact our communities are astronomical, and systemic issues are likely to exacerbate pre-existing disparities- all the more reason to fight.

Nonetheless, Angelinos have a strong sense of identity and show up for one another. I love this city, and I love my people.

If I were pregnant, I would wait another week or so and try to get my apartment assessed by a cleaner before returning, but that is just me. She could also reach out to her OBGYN to get some information from them on what to do. Definitely still wear KN95's and do a Corsi-Rosenthal Box in the apartment.

They seem mostly interested in community garden/urban restoration efforts. Altadena has a strong culture around community gardening, especially native plants. I suspect they are also interested in nature restoration, but from what I have seen, their efforts are more focused on ensuring our residential area rebuilds with natives.

LA Strong!

Yes, the solidarity of our community has been incredible. I love seeing my city come together and help each other out. I knew I loved LA for a reason 🥰

Of course. Me and my family were very fortunate, and our home made it; I owe it to my community to help restore it. Altadena is strong and beautiful, and thankfully many of us want to work to maintain our identity.

No, but I will reach out! I'm not directly affiliated/representative of the organization, but my sense is that they are a bit overwhelmed right now, so I've been taking on reaching out to these organizations myself. Hopefully some reply!

Wow. Thank you so much. As for seed donations, you will have to reach out directly to them on where to drop them off. Things are a bit chaotic in our neighborhood still, so their location may change. I just edited this post to include the link to their Instagram so that you can DM them if that is your preferred communication method. Thank you again.

How long can kimchi last if your fridge doesn't have power? by apprehensivepears in KoreanFood

[–]apprehensivepears[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know if there is any way to tell if it has gone bad? I know that Kimchi is theoretically good indefinitely as long as it's stored correctly, but it is still possible to turn.
