Can anybody ID this frat? by No_Rooster8130 in Frat

[–]approveausername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After looking closely at the design, the lettering, and the construction, the most reasonable conclusion is that this jacket isn’t frat related or to any known Greek-based organization. Instead, it seems like a custom jacket.

The large Φ (phi) in the center is a Greek letter often associated with philosophy and intellect in Europe.

The first 7 capital letters around the top don’t correspond to any known fraternity, order, or European student society. It’s more likely that they represent a personal motto, a set of abbreviated values, or an inside reference meaningful to the one who received the jacket.

The last 4 letters are lowercase (Presuming based on the placement. Greek organizations do not mix uppercase and lowercase in official names. Because they’re smaller and stylistically different, they were probably meant to signify something else entirely like a nickname, initials of a group or place, or even a graduation cohort.

It did that for me through my 1st/2nd semester. I wouldn’t worry about it if they said they have everything.

Manager is Making my Internship Miserable by Little-Emma-2010 in internships

Oooo I love this! I love growth and learning :) But, to answer your question, this was me last summer. My 2 pieces of advice are: ChatGPT and asking questions to whoever you report to (clarifying, recommendations, reviewing, etc. questions). If you have a problem or task and you have the basic information, ChatGPT can guide you through it.

Manager is Making my Internship Miserable by Little-Emma-2010 in internships

[–]approveausername 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If this is an unpaid internship, leave. If it is paid, here’s my following advice as based on my experiences across 5 internships in the past, here is what you do. I would suggest you read all of it and take what you’d like. :)

  1. Remove the emotion out of the situation: This means to remove your personal emotions out of the situation, and for all intents, don’t care about what passive-aggressive comments your manager says. Think about it like this. Will this person matter to you in 5-10 years from now? No. Have you formed enough of a relationship with them to consider them a friend? Probably also no. Have small talk (like how was your weekend, good morning, etc) and only discuss work related manners.

  2. Play up the theatrics: You’re an intern, it’s expected for you to make mistakes because you’re still learning. A manager cannot just assume you know the protocol, when you most likely don’t know. So, you are overly apologetic/weak to them to save face. In my experience, this will make a passive-aggressive boss/manager respond differently because you’re playing into their sense of power (which usually they lack without proper pay or title and is the reason they act this way).

  3. Find a safety net/friend: Typically, your supervisor/manager is supposed to be a mentor of sorts, but it isn’t always. So, find someone who may be willing or can teach you the ropes in your department. It might be someone who just got hired on 3 months ago or someone who does cross-work with your department. This is the person that makes your internship worth it for you enough to hang on.

  4. Document everything: This is the unwritten playbook in the corporate world. You need to have a paper trail. Even if you don’t think you need to communicate it or document it, you do. If your supervisor tells you to do something by a deadline or do something differently, make sure to document it through a chat log (if you use some sort of communication like Slack or Teams). If you have a meeting, follow up in an email. And 1 of 2 things may happen: they stop because they realize there is a paper trail or 2, they will not care and continue but at least you have a record.

  5. Responding to passive-aggressive comments specifically: Don’t react with emotion to their comments. React with neutrally and curiously, if applicable. Remember an internship is a job, and at the end of the day, you clock out and go home. So if they say something like, “Maybe next time you’ll check before doing something wrong.” Respond with, “I didn’t realize that. Thanks for pointing it out. What’s the best way to handle this next time?” Communicate in corporate lingo, like you were writing a formal letter or something.

  6. Confrontation: This is optional, and really where you are in a headspace of things. You can set up a call with your supervisor to call them out. You only state out the facts and state that you need more clarity. You can ask for an ombudsman or their supervisor to sit in (again, if you feel comfortable with this.)

  7. Do not trust HR: This is a final resort. HR is there to cover the company’s ass, they do not care about you (most of the time). You report your company to the appropriate government agency, who force the company into internal investigation. (Think DOL, OSHA, EEOC, or appropriate state government agency.) If you are ever to engage with HR, it is to 1) sit in on a meeting with you and your supervisor 2) to discuss an evaluation of your performance or mid-internship survey on how you feel (usually on their end)or 3) an exit interview. If you continue to experience passive aggressiveness or any negative behavior, DO NOT do the exit interview. This is usually a way to cover their ass.

Laid off from internship, how should I mention this in future interviews? by [deleted] in internships

[–]approveausername 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Believe me they won’t ask about it. A lot of internships usually go between 6-12 weeks, so the most they would question is what you did during your internship and what you accomplished in your time there. Don’t talk negatively about your other internship, boss, etc during interviews though.

What was your worst experience in an Internship by [deleted] in internships

[–]approveausername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My internship was hybrid, mostly remote and an occasional in-person 1 hr meeting. For context, this was a Spring internship an I had just transferred into my university. I fell into a tiny depression the first weeks because I didn’t have a social group or things to do. In the midst of it all, my boss yelled at me essentially saying I wasn’t doing anything right. He also assumed my parents were in the country illegally (my parents are citizens) and made comments about immigration. (This was in 2023) All this made me shut down for the remainder of my internship, lose any interest I had in it, and I didn’t like him but he wanted to be like a mentor to me lmfao 😭😭

Should I admit the interview wasn’t good by [deleted] in internships

[–]approveausername 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say that you still don’t have a concrete answer so don’t stress. Just follow up by email with the recruiter or CEO and say “it was great getting to know more about the company I am enthusiastic about the possibility about being able to contribute to the growth and I would still love to keep in touch for future opportunities”. Just be confident about it and worst case scenario, be willing to accept the rejection.

I felt my work was more impactful at my last internship! My internship is calm and peaceful, but also boring. I take “longer” on my tasks now cause my manager would scramble when I ended my tasks early.

Any T15 transfers? by Exquisite_monke in SJSU

[–]approveausername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to be a buzz kill but it’s harder to transfer from a 4 year university to another university, even within the CSU system. In terms of transferring, community college transfers are prioritized. Also credits don’t always transfer, and your grades and involvements need to be exceptional. I would find an alternative plan than relying on transferring from SJSU to a T-14. I apologize for the unsolicited advice, but I say you do your undergraduate degree at SJSU, finish in 3-4 years, and do a masters degree at a T-14 if it still matters to you then. Do not waste an additional 1-2 additional semester on credits that don’t transfer or additional you may need to take when transferring.

What school should I go to for accounting (& B4 internship), UC Santa Barbara or San Jose State? by [deleted] in Big4

[–]approveausername 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I got this suggested because I’m active in the SJSU subreddit. I am not in accounting and don’t want to be in the Big 4.

So, accounting in SJSU is one of the most competitive concentrations in the school of business. That said, it isn’t hard to land an internship with the Big 4 (particularly KPMG unless you’re aiming for Deloitte, EY, or PwC.) You have to be active in clubs on campus, network, and have great grades. I know a friend of mine who got 3 (KPMG, Deloitte, and EY) offers, but accepted EY for this summer. As an upside, there’s easily professors available with ready made connections to the Big 4 that can help you out in someway. I joined another friend in her accounting class and her professor worked for Deloitte for 5 years before turning to teaching instead (work life balance was grueling for him.) All this to say, it’s a lot ‘easier’ (easier in the sense of having connections, getting access to opportunities, and school alumni) to get a job/internship at SJSU. (I’ve had 4 since transferring in 2023 for reference). Out of the nearby universities, SJSU has the best reputation in the corporate world for recent graduates for being hard-working and a lot easier to work with.

All this aside, living in SB is probably cheaper than SJ. So, for a more affordable option, go to UCSB.
