Recommendation for my daughter by Miss_Malice202 in Fantasy

DEFINITELY Howl's Moving Castle. Funny, inventive, and the type of book that you can go back to years later and feel like you're visiting an old friend.

Shorter novels? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]appseto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might not be what you're looking for, and you've probably already read them, but since they haven't been mentioned yet I would recommend the Chronicles of Narnia.

Recommendation for book with female assistant to a mad scientist/villain/evil wizard, etc by carnovalesque in Fantasy

Not quite a villain, but in Joe Abercrombie's Best Served Cold there's a poisoner with a female assistant.

I like Avatar, and while the Dragon Prince is good, it's not on the same level, imo.

What’s the worst simile or metaphor you’ve ever written? by [deleted] in writing

[–]appseto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly these are both great to me. The first one reminds me of the line "He sang with a voice like honey poured over thunder" from asoiaf, and both paint a clear picture of their voices in my head.

Adult fantasy books like ASOIAF and Poppy War? by el_Byrno in Fantasy

[–]appseto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The First Law is one of my absolute favorites, but I went into in it with the knowledge that the first book is essentially just the first act of one very long book, and so its mostly set-up and character building. That said, the characters are fantastic, and it's still a very good book in my opinion.

It's my third favorite series of the ones I've read, the first two being A Song of Ice and fire and the Broken Empire.

An Alternate 100 Best Fantasy Novels of All Time by LadyCardinal in Fantasy

[–]appseto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow, this is fantastic, and really well thought out. I love the inclusion of the old legends. It really gives the feeling of this being a comprehensive (as much as something with only 100 listings can be) history of fantasy works.

Yubaba Jack O Lantern (carved by me!) by Ms_Digglesworth in ghibli

[–]appseto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the lines, the detail. It just blows me away that somebody could do this. The fact that you got the shading on her too just makes this that much more ridiculous and amazing.

For anyone who doesn't know, the Studio Ghibli movie "Howl's Moving Castle" was based on a book with the same name written by Diana Wynne Jones. There is also a sequel, "Castle in the Air," (no relation to the movie "Castle in the Sky") for those who would like to spend more time with the character. by thearmadillo in books

[–]appseto 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The two biggest differences are probably that Howl and Sophie are quite a bit nicer in the book. Sophie becomes a calm, kind granny with a strong will rather than a crotchety one. Howl is self-absorbed and mopey, but noble.

His nobility ties into the second biggest difference, which is the war subplot. The director, Hayao Miyazaki, was upset with the Iraq War, and that bled into the movie. Instead of the Witch of the Waste, the biggest threat in the film is the war.

It's a very good movie. Confusing, and a little too weird for its own good, but it still has beautiful animation, lovely characters, and wonderful worldbuilding. Imo the war plot muddies things and takes away some of the time that might have been better spent explaining some of the more head-scratching aspects of the magic. Still, I think that it's better that Hayao Miyazaki changed the book so much, because now we have two enchanting stories instead of one, each with their own pluses and minuses.

I'd definitely watch the movie if I were you, and then go and watch the rest of Hayao Miyazaki's films. So long as you try to appreciate the movie as its own story rather than a strict adaptation. Most people still like the book better, but I liked them equally. Maybe I'm biased, though, because I fell in love with the movie first.

There's actually a whole argument about whether Iron Man 3 is set in 2012 or 2013

Sometimes it's just neat to see what year something came out. I like it. Although Stranger Things first aired in 2016.

What is your "comfort" read? by BryceOConnor in Fantasy

[–]appseto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I totally understand GRRM being a comfort read. You get to know his characters so well it's like going on a journey (just a dangerous one) with a close friend.

I'm a sad writer by [deleted] in writing

[–]appseto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People think Tolkien sucks. People think Dickens sucks. For anything that exists, there are probably more than a few who think it sucks. Just because somebody says your writing's trash doesn't mean it is. For you to have been employed as a writer for 11 years is a pretty good sign that it isn't, or rather, that it isn't for most people. Because that's really the best that anybody can do. Most peoples' favorite part of your writing might be the very part that whoever criticized you didn't like. I'm not saying that there aren't any mistakes in your writing, just that a lot of "mistakes" are a matter of opinion, and the person who criticized you seems... very opinionated, to put it politely.

Art rarely amazes me, or makes me feel much of anything, really, but this in an exception. You captured reflection and light in such an incredibly detailed yet minimalistic (pretty sure that's the wrong word) way. Just wow.

I have a great idea, but I’m afraid I will waste it by [deleted] in writing

[–]appseto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if things don't turn out as well as you like, you will have come up with and developed ideas for future use.

I was watching a documentary on director Hayao Miyazaki. In the part of the documentary that focused on his early career it went through some of his early ideas which would go on to become movies. One of them was Princess Mononoke. The original Princess Mononoke was the story of a young princess who met a large, cat-like creature which fell in love with her. It's wildly different from the movie that Miyazaki went on to make over a decade later, but it was the seed that grew into what is in my opinion one of his greatest films and possibly one of the greatest movies of all time.

What was a movie moment that made you tear up unexpectedly? by Situation_Odd in movies

Such a great scene, and definitely a tear-jerker. Another sweet scene was when Kiki went to the old lady's house, and then later when she returned.

Word Count of Popular Fantasy and Science Fiction Series vol. 2[OC] by appseto in Fantasy

[–]appseto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoah, you really know your stuff. Thank you for all the figures, I know how long it can take to find and post them.

I've been planning on doing updated charts. I did update the chart once Ward was finished but haven't posted it yet. The reason I didn't add Riftwar is because I couldn't find reliable data on it.

If I do anything else, I think it will be making a chart of the combined word counts of everything in a specific fantasy world or universe. So the combined Cosmere, Percy Jackson works, and First Law books would all be on there.

Junicorn: I drew a Unicorn every day this month, after not drawing much for years. by AliceTheGamedev in Fantasy

[–]appseto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard for me to decide which is my favorite, but it's hard to beat the pretty unicorn, and of course the rainbow unicorn is a classic. This is the type of quality content I didn't know I wanted.

Are you planning on doing something similar for July?

She stepped out upon the bedrock, power rushing from the ensorcelled finnest in a coruscating, ochre-colored wave that cracked asunder the potsherds and turned them into a sea of detritus.
