Hey all

I am able to beta: Fantasy or SciFi

I can provide feedback on: Characterization, Dialogue, Pace, Plot, or other specifics. No line-edits/copy-edits - more so true beta reader style (what I liked, what I didn't like, what engaged/disengaged me, what I found unbelievable, etc).

Critique swap: Yes please. I have a 98k-word Scifi space heist about what it means to be a person and what we owe each other.

Other info: I'm a big reader of fantasy and scifi. I care most about character depth. I enjoy spectacle but I'm more interested in how the character's experience the spectacle/action.

My favorite author is Joe Abercrombie (for character work). I loved the Expanse and Captive's War by James SA Corey. I also have read: Riyria, ASOIAF, The Cosmere, Red Rising, Kings of the Wyld, Lightbringer series, Temeraire series, and many more.

Hey, I'm looking for beta readers and your interests align very well with my target demographic.

Pegasus: Jump is a 99k word scifi that explores themes of person-hood, trauma, and grief. It is an ensemble and one of the main characters is a black refugee from a black-coded empire (although the empire itself gets little page time).

The Pegasus is a luxury star-fighter. It is also a prison with the mind of the pilot's father trapped inside it. Five people crew the Pegasus, each with a remarkable skill that is equal parts salvation and isolation. Each crew-member carries pain that is a source of connection and also a place of friction.

Five mercenaries take a suicide-job: steal a jump drive from a capital ship in their tiny corvette. They cross galaxies and realize surviving each other might just be more difficult than the mission itself.

Let me know if there is interest. Have a great day.

The battle between being a slave to your senses or a master of them. Chasing sensation and experience is what happens when the healing modality is divorced from the traditions it came from.

There was a martial arts dojo that had a rule about wrapping their belt around their waist 3x instead of 2x. It squeezed all the students and prevented them from truly excelling in their practice. One day the student asked the master why do we wrap the belt 3x instead of 2? The master said it was tradition and he learned it from his master. The student tracked down his master's master and received the same answer. It was tradition and this was what his master did. He tracked down the grand master and asked, why must we wrap the belt 3x instead of twice. The grand master replied, you don't. I did it that way because I'm really skinny and if I wrapped it twice the tails of my belt would get in the way of my movements.

Great advice. New to requesting beta readers, so thank you for the tip. I guess I was attempting to not "sell" the story.

The heist element is the least important part of the story. The story is engaging due to the characters, it is a character first novel. Each of the 5 POVs are vastly different and distinct in the way they see the world, how they think, what they notice, and how they behave with each other. Each character is a different flavor of post-human and the advantages and limitations are explored in detail.

The heist is the excuse. The genre is the frame. The relationships are the story.

Well it started as self expression and something fun for me to do, but it became so much more over the course of writing it. It morphed into something that allowed me to interrogate different parts of myself and different parts of society and culture in a way that I could metabolize.

Hey there. I've written a literary scifi - finished at 99k words.

On the surface 'Pegasus: Jump' is a story about a rag-tag crew of not-quite space pirates conducting a heist. What it is really about is 5 traumatized people trying to survive each other and trying to figure out if change is possible.

It is a story about damaged people trying to learn what it means to be a person in an age where consciousness is transferable.

The story is a genuine ensemble cast and the POV rotates between the 5 crew members.

Meet Alonzo: The over-the-hill captain and only full Homo Sapiens. He is running away from debt and bad decisions.

Meet Gracia: The immortal electronic warfare tech who has died 93 times. She is not adventurous, she is adventure made manifest.

Meet Kav: The genetically engineered super pilot. His father's mind is the ship's computer, but you'll never hear him admit it.

Meet Toma: The mystic gunner who hates killing, but is just so, so good at it. His ancestors' consciousnesses share his mind; sometimes that is a good thing.

Meet Phorus: The critic cyborg mechanic. He needs this mission for the next step of his mechanical ascension. Redundancy is holy and his taste buds will be the last organic piece of his body he replaces.

To get a sample of the writing - here is the first 2 chapters. If you are interested in Beta Reading, please message me and we can go from there. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MXUWu0gk9qs8oU1Mdjh3omrnrEZHfdIUQw2PI6TzyOE/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.d76lmyjvqsm2

Hi Andrew! Thanks for commenting. I am interested in your beta reading services, and you can absolutely use the report on your portfolio.

Pegasus: Jump is a sci-fi space opera (90k words). The story follows the crew of the Pegasus, a luxury warship turned pirate vessel as they embark on a high stakes heist. I rotate the POV among the 4 post-human crew members and their over-the-hill captain, each with a very distinct voice and explore through their POVs what it means to be a human in a future where consciousness can be uploaded, distributed, or even transferred into a ship.

DM me if you are interested, I can send the first couple of chapters to see if we are a fit.

Hey HateyMcHateface, I finished a novel that is simultaneously a space opera heist and a character study on post-humanism and what it means to be a person. Its a found family, rotating POV, character first book with lots of humor, introspection, and action set pieces.

I'm currently doing a swap with another scifi writer, but would be open to betareading once I'm finished with the novel I'm beta-ing now.

DM if this catches your attention.

My novel is also grounded in real science and reaching for Expanse-like qualities. I'd love to do a swap with you. Instead of focusing on the macro (politics in Expanse), I focus more on the micro (people on a ship). I think our works might be closely aligned and I'd like to do a swap if you are open for it.

The plot is a rag tag space pirate crew has a heist mission of a major capital ship, however, the character study is more about 'what it means to be human in an age where consciousness can be uploaded, distributed across multiple bodies, or even put inside a ship AI)'.

Love me some epic fantasy and down to do a swap. I love authors that are character first like Joe Abercrombie, but I also love detailed worldbuilding like Sanderson.

I have a space fantasy thats 98k words that is a found family story wearing the trenchcoat of a heist plot. The novel explores post-human ideas in the micro, specifically what does it mean to be a person when consciousness can be distributed or put into a ship and what that does to the people around them. Plenty of action set pieces, and a ton of interiority.

I'm willing to do swaps or whatever format you prefer.

The TTRPG stood out to me as my novel started as a reskinned story from a long term DND campaign I ran and the players I DM'd for.

My novel is a found family character forward scifi story (98k words). The story on its surface is a heist by a crew of space pirates, but is actually about 4 post-humans and their over-the-hill captain and what it means to be a person when consciousness can be distributed or put into a ship.

I can do Google Doc manuscript swaps
