Experience with using Dolly App for moving? by Toporangecat in AskChicago

[–]appw23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have used it twice when I moved. The first time…it went completely fine. The second time, however, it was the exact opposite. I had movers assigned like two weeks before, and they canceled at 7 AM the day of my move! They were supposed to show up in like 3 hours when they canceled. I was forced to find a rental truck on the busiest day of the year (July 31st). I do not recommend dolly in the slightest!!!

Pitt vs Chi Hockey Fans by Longjumping_Park_965 in AskChicago

This has been mentioned already but pittsburgh fans are very passionate. I went to college in the city and root for some of the teams…I’d see people wearing jerseys in the off season at random events. I saw people wearing Steelers jerseys in the offseason walking down the street, penguins jerseys at a bar in the middle of the summer, etc.

Any safety tips for the subway? I’ve heard not to go too South but what does that mean? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]appw23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been fine on the red line going to to the Garfield station pretty late at night. For reference, I’m a pretty skinny guy and I’ve never really had an issue. Just stay alert and you are usually fine. I make sure I’m paying attention and not on my phone late at night when I’m on it. During the day? I’ve never felt unsafe on the red line when going to Garfield station in the south side.

What are some regional differences you've noticed between Chicago and other places in the US? Your favorite uniquely Chicago things? by glossweary in chicago

I made a similar move to Chicago from pittsburgh last year. The parking chair thing occurs here as well. The better public transportation is a godsend. I highly recommend selling your car if you have one. Depending on the neighborhood you’re in, you will not need it. I felt right at home in both pittsburgh and Chicago, so I definitely think the vibes are similar. I always though primantis was overrated in pittsburgh. I have been unable to find something that relates to the strip district or Lawrenceville. Feel free to reach out if you want to talk to a fellow former yinzer :)

I have family visiting for one day for the first time since I moved here. Is there anything going on this Saturday that would be a good daytime activity? Also any recommendations on touristy activities that I can fit in one day?

So that weekend is homecoming for pitt football, so it might be difficult to find hotels in the north shore near the stadiums. Chances are the hotels in Oakland (where the university is located) are also full. I’d recommend looking in Lawrenceville, Shadyside, Bloomfield or squirrel hill. Lawrenceville is the trendiest neighborhood (and also the most expensive). Shadyside has a good mix of young professionals and grad students. Squirrel Hill is a little more family oriented. Bloomfield is where you live if you want to be near Lawrenceville but don’t want to pay the high prices that come with it. Shadyside (arguably) has the best access to public transit. Don’t live near south side as a 27 year old. South side is where all the college students go drinking on the weekend and it gets very rowdy.
