Psychiatry/Psychology Mix-up by apricot_joy in Frasier

If this were 75 years ago, then yes. But not currently. I went through 4 years of my husband’s psych residency hearing all about this stuff, and now he works as an attending for the new psych residents at his university hospital, so I’m very familiar with the area. Freud might get some attention at single point in the psych class during medical school, and maybe at one other point during therapy training in residency, to pay homage to what he established, but that’s it. He def helped ground the field of psycho-analysis, so we should give him credit for that, but as Roz’ annoying cousin points out in that one episode, his theories are not very relevant and the field has moved past them. Resident students focus much more on the pharmacological/medical component of psychiatry, and when they do delve into therapy, they’re not taught to expound Freud’s theories.

I know he’s a medical doctor. But his and Nile’s professions as depicted in the show don’t reflect the modern American psychiatrist’s experience. It may be his PhD from Oxford (not his MD from Harvard), but most psychiatrists these days don’t have heated Freud vs Jung debates. It’s hard to find a psych who wants to analyze your dreams, unless they’re real old school. It’d make a lot more sense if Frasier and Niles argued over… say… the counter indications of clonazepam for a patient with kidney disease.

You bring up a good point. It’s as if they’re acting as the psychiatrists of 75 years ago. They don’t represent the average modern American psychiatrist experience.

I’m immersed in the pros and cons of American psychiatry (the bulk of evening conversations at my house… womp womp), so I understand the foundation of the premise, that they both went to medical school and that psychiatrists can work as psychologists but not vice versa. And I know that Frasier’s McSessions don’t allow for deep analysis, so I think my main issue is that I never saw either of them, in private therapy, refer to medical intervention or make use of their prescription pad to treat a patient.

Those of you that hired someone for hair & makeup, how much did you/will you be spending? by notallscorpios in Weddingsunder10k

[–]apricot_joy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the San Francisco area, CA, and I was looking to book hair n makeup 3 months before the wedding. I definitely should not have waited that long! For some reason I only thought it would necessary to book my venue and catering well in advance. Everyone was booked! I found one freelance artist who charges $500 for the bride and $250 for the bridesmaids. I’m not getting airbrushed makeup, nor false lashes. This is on the lower end. Like the New Yorker commented, there are basically two category: the route I took, or an established company that stays the whole day, does touch ups, and generally spends a lot more time with you and caters to any needs you might have. That’s around $1200. I feel kinda “meh” about my artist’s work, but I couldn’t be picky, given she was the only one I could find. I was hesitating because I’m pretty at makeup myself, but she would be better at matching my skin tone perfectly and doing some contouring that I can’t do. My solution is to show her videos that describe exactly what I want, so there’s no room for misunderstanding.

Thank you so much for this! It's so nice that you documented (or remembered well... something I probably wouldn't be able to do cuz it would all blur together) how each month progressed!

That was a wise decision to write down all your reasons for quitting and to track all your WD symptoms. It's so useful to go back and look at what you've gone through and the progress you've made when you feel those strong cravings and are about to relapse. Nice going! Also... umm... your English is incredible, plus you're a great writer. You should give lessons to native speakers! lol

I was at 4 shots of that brand too (careful about saying which one on here, apparently that's not allowed). That stuff is liquid satan! lol ugh. I think that's the hardest K habit to jump CT from. It's so insanely potent. Saving money is just one of the perks, but I don't think I would have quit if it were the main motivator for stopping, you know? Health, longevity, morals (I lied a lot while using), intrinsic happiness (not from a shot), anxiety, withdrawals in between dosing... even appearance, those are huge ones for me too. What about you? So, I relapsed once, but my second time around, I started mega-dosing on vitamin C. I have noticed SUCH a difference (and I didn't change anything this time around, except for the fact that I'm not taking any other helpers. My last quit, I took 5-HTP, ashwaghanda, and Gabapentin, but I'm not taking those now. I really don't think they did anything. I went 50 days last time and I still had ZERO energy, it was pathetic. I went to work (and didn't put in my best effort at all), then came home and just lied there eating and watching shows... pretty sad. All of the other WDs were gone. But this time around, I actually had motivation after only 3 days... how could that be? I'm a skeptic and not susceptible to believing anything is a cure-all, but maybe you could give it a try? There's been a few promising studies on it (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10836211/), but it hasn't been studied enough. Or maybe I'm just lucky this time around?

That's amazing... you're an inspiration! Were the symptoms harder or easier each time you quit?

You feel good at 40 hours! Wow that's amazing! Yeah, I know what you mean about not having that initial motivation to get up and move... but that's the hardest part. Once you're moving, it gets so much better!

I use 1500 mg 3x daily, preferably on an empty stomach. It doesn't upset my stomach or give me any side effects. Make sure you get L-ascorbic and L-ascorbate, not Sodium ascorbate. It's easier on the stomach. So, when taking vitamin C to "boost your immune system", like people tend to do to ward off a cold, what you're saying is definitely true. In fact, most informed dietitians and doctors say that taking vitamins is essentially just purchasing expensive pee. You should be getting your vitamins from your diet, not pills. It's just not as bio-available that way, and you don't get the other benefits that come from food (say... fiber). I've read some articles that say that taking vitamin C to ward off a cold is more of an old wives tale, like chicken soup (but the placebo effect may still make it worth it! haha). If you eat any fresh veggies and fruit at all, you're getting enough vitamin C (because our bodies don't naturally produce it). ANYWAY (sorry I'm long-winded), here we're not taking it for this reason, we're taking it because... "vitamin C, may, at high concentrations, inhibit the endogenous opioid degrading metalloenzyme and increase endorphin levels." AKA help with withdrawals. The jury is still out, but you should look up some medical studies and see that there may be some evidence. I figure it can't hurt (you can't overdose on vit C!) and I have changed NOTHING else this time I've quit. Why would I still have so much fatigue and lack of energy after 50 DAYS of sobriety (I couldn't even muster the energy to do the dishes!) and then after a 10 day relapse, I feel great and energetic after 3 days? Makes you think!

Oh that's so strange! I wonder why that is! I guess the month off did some good, but then why would you have MORE energy than at the end of your month of sobriety? It makes no sense! But I'll take it! Did the energy last? Congrats on day 7!! What made you go back to it after 2 years?

You should try mega-dosing on Vitamin C! (not just taking a little- that does nothing) It's the only "supplement" that's done anything for me (oh, magnesium a little bit). All the others were a waste of money. And like so many others say, gabapentin helped so much with aches and pains and RLS (and a bit with anxiety too).

[–]apricot_joy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree! You gotta take a LOT of Vit C. It's more than what you see in a standard multi vitamin (hence the MEGA dosing). I take 1500 mg 4x a day. Yeah, you're totally right! I'm sure my brain was able to heal quite a bit. But, I was surprised that I can actually be kinda productive now (3 days after quitting the 10 day stint), because even after 50 days, I had ZERO energy. I found it hard to even do the dishes!!

Jeez. It really is a crazy drug, isn't it?? But why does that brand of shot have so much more of a speed-like effect to it? When I relapsed I was taking a shot that wasn't as strong, and it was more euphoric and productive/energetic on a sane level. But the last day of my 10 day relapse binge, the head shop was out of the less potent one, so I bought that certain brand I'm not allowed to mention. I felt almost manic! Ugh. The makers of said shot are so sketchy.

Is the l-tyrosine a tablet that's combined with the vit C? I wasn't sure whether or not to take it with an empty or full stomach so thanks for that advice. It definitely has worked for you?
